Chapter 2: What Happened Upstairs
Daniel ignored her.
He pulled his phone from his pocket.
“I’m checking the footage.””
Mia stepped in front of him.
“No.””
This time, nobody missed it.
Nobody missed the fear.
Not sadness.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
Claire folded her arms.
“Mia, why are you scared of a camera if you’re telling the truth?””
Mia looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
Claire shook her head.
“No. I think I’m starting to.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Everyone stop.””
He turned to me.
“Dad, where is the recording?””
“In my office.””
“Then we watch it.””
Mia’s voice cracked.
“Daniel, please.””
He didn’t answer.
That was the first moment I saw doubt enter his eyes.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But it was there.
We walked to my office together.
The room smelled like old books and cedar wood. Margaret’s picture still sat on my desk. She was smiling in the photograph, the way she always did when she knew something I didn’t.
I connected the security drive.
The screen came alive.
Everyone gathered behind me.
The footage showed the hallway.
Empty.
Then dinner.
My family laughing.
My grandchildren running past.
My heart tightened.
For a moment, I wished I could go back.
Before the scream.
Before the slap.
Before my son looked at me like I was a monster.
The timestamp moved forward.
8:42 p.m.
I watched myself walk upstairs.
Exactly as I remembered.
A minute later, Mia appeared.
Daniel leaned closer.
“There.””
Nobody spoke.
Mia stood in the hallway.
Alone.
Waiting.
Not crying.
Not scared.
Waiting.
Claire covered her mouth.
“No…”
The video continued.
Mia looked toward the stairs.
Then she checked the hallway camera.
My stomach dropped.
She knew.
She knew exactly where it was.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“What are you doing?””
Mia said nothing.
On the screen, she walked toward the stairs.
Then I appeared.
The footage showed me stopping.
Talking to her.
My voice came from the speaker.
“Mia, did something happen?””
The video continued.
Mia stepped closer.
Then she grabbed her own blouse.
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“No.””
The next few seconds played.
The ripping sound.
The scream.
The fall.
The accusation.
But there was something nobody noticed before.
Something I had noticed the moment I saw her looking at the camera.
Before she screamed, Mia looked directly into the lens.
And smiled.
A tiny smile.
Barely there.
But real.
Daniel stepped backward.
“No.””
His voice was almost a whisper.
Mia started crying again.
“This doesn’t prove anything.””
Claire turned around.
“It proves everything.””
“No,” Mia snapped.
The sudden anger shocked everyone.
Then she caught herself.
She lowered her voice.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?”” Daniel asked.
Mia stared at him.
“Your father.””
Daniel looked back at the screen.
But he didn’t look convinced anymore.
I sat down slowly.
My hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From heartbreak.
I had spent my whole life protecting my family.
And somehow, I became the person they wanted destroyed.
Then Daniel noticed something.
He pointed at the screen.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked.
The footage had continued.
After Mia left the hallway, after everyone rushed upstairs, someone else entered the frame.
Someone who had been standing nearby the entire time.
Someone who had heard everything.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
The person on the screen turned toward the camera.
May you like
And my blood went cold.
Because I knew exactly who it was.
