Chapter 7: The Mother At The Door
The word destroyed the room.
My son.
Daniel took one step backward.
“No.””
The woman’s face crumbled.
“I know you don’t remember me.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at her.
Then back at me.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I had no answer.
Not one that made sense.
Eleanor stood in my doorway.
Twenty years older.
Twenty years of missing time written across her face.
But her eyes were the same.
The same eyes I remembered from the day she left.
Scared.
Regretful.
Lost.
Mia moved behind Daniel.
“She came back exactly when we needed her.””
I looked at her.
“You arranged this?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was weak.
“I came because I saw the news.””
“What news?””
She looked at Daniel.
“About what happened tonight.””
My blood ran cold.
“How?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire picked up her phone.
Her face changed.
“Dad…”
“What?””
She showed me the screen.
A news alert.
The headline was about an alleged family assault.
But the article had been posted less than an hour ago.
Someone had leaked the story.
Before anyone outside this house should have known.
Daniel looked at Mia.
“You called them.””
Mia didn’t deny it.
“I needed the truth exposed.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You needed control.””
The room went quiet.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“I never wanted this.””
I looked at her.
“You left.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“Twenty years.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were gone.””
She lowered her head.
“I thought disappearing was the only way.””
“From what?””
She looked toward Mia.
Then back at me.
“From him.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Eleanor’s hands tightened around her suitcase.
“The man who helped me disappear.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Samuel Blake.””
The name from the documents.
The name Margaret had paid.
Claire looked at me.
“That’s not a coincidence.””
No.
It wasn’t.
Eleanor walked into the room.
“I was afraid of him.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew everything.””
“Everything about what?””
She looked at Daniel.
“About you.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Eleanor continued.
“When I found out I was pregnant, Samuel told me he would take care of everything.””
My voice became cold.
“Who was he?””
“My brother.””
Nobody moved.
“Your brother?””
Eleanor nodded.
“He was the reason I ran.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why would your brother care about me?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Because you were valuable.””
That word felt wrong.
A child should never be valuable.
A child should be loved.
“What does that mean?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“Thomas, you never knew the truth about my family.””
“No.””
She looked at the house.
At the walls.
At the photographs.
“Your wife did.””
My heart stopped.
“Margaret?””
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“My mother knew?””
Eleanor nodded.
“She found out before I disappeared.””
Claire whispered:
“And she paid Samuel?””
Eleanor looked at the papers on the table.
“Yes.””
I felt the room spinning.
“Why?””
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she was protecting Daniel.””
Everyone looked at her.
Eleanor took a deep breath.
“Because Samuel wanted custody.””
Daniel froze.
“Why?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Because you weren’t just my child.””
A pause.
“You were his way into this family.””
The lights flickered.
Nobody moved.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Eleanor turned pale.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
May you like
She whispered:
“He found me.””
