Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Lie

The file appeared on the screen like a threat.

Not a message.

Not an explanation.

A threat.

Nobody wanted to touch the laptop.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to open it.

Because we all understood the same thing.

Whoever sent it knew what we were doing.

Whoever sent it was watching.

“I’m calling the police,” Claire said.

This time, nobody argued.

I picked up my phone.

But before I could dial, the laptop made a sound.

A notification.

The file opened by itself.

The screen went black.

Then a video started.

A room appeared.

An old room.

I recognized it immediately.

My father’s study.

The room had been empty for years.

The camera angle was strange.

Hidden.

Like someone had recorded without permission.

Then a figure walked into view.

Marcus.

But younger.

Three years younger.

He was holding a folder.

He looked exhausted.

“I’m making this recording because I know nobody will believe me.””

Jordan leaned closer.

Marcus continued.

“Arthur thinks I betrayed him.””

He looked directly at the hidden camera.

“But the truth is, I was trying to protect him.””

I felt anger rising.

Because I had heard that before.

Everyone claimed they were protecting me.

Everyone except me knew what was happening.

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

“These are copies of everything.””

He placed them on the desk.

“Transfers. Signatures. Contracts.””

He looked away.

“The person who stole the money wasn’t me.””

A silence filled the room.

Then Marcus said:

“It was someone Arthur trusts completely.””

Claire grabbed my hand.

Not because she was comforting me.

Because she was scared.

The video continued.

Marcus looked toward the door.

“I know what I have to do.””

He picked up the folder.

“But before I leave, I need to tell Arthur one thing.””

He paused.

“If you ever see this, don’t believe the first person who cries.””

The video stopped.

The screen went black again.

Nobody spoke.

Then Maya whispered:

“He knew.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He knew someone would blame Jordan.””

The words hit me.

Because they were true.

Marcus hadn’t just created chaos.

He had predicted it.

He had planned every step.

Jordan stood up.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“I think I know where the original documents are.””

My heart tightened.

“Where?””

“Grandpa’s house.””

I frowned.

“My father’s house was sold after Grandma died.””

“I know.””

“Then?””

Jordan hesitated.

“Before it was sold, Uncle Marcus asked me to help him move boxes.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What boxes?””

“The ones from Grandpa’s office.””

Claire looked confused.

“Why would Marcus need Jordan?””

Jordan looked embarrassed.

“Because I was the only one who knew the password to Grandpa’s old computer.””

I stared at him.

“You never told me that.””

“I thought it was just moving files.””

“What did you see?””

He looked down.

“A folder.””

“What folder?””

“Bennett Family.””

The same name.

The same thing Marcus had used.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

From Marcus.

*You’re finally asking the right questions.*

Another message appeared.

*Go to your father’s old house.*

Then:

*Bring Jordan.*

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“He wants us there.””

Jordan nodded.

“Because he knows something we don’t.””

I hated that he was right.

But I hated something else more.

Marcus had spent three years controlling the story.

And I was tired of reacting.

“I’m going.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Arthur, no.””

“He knows where the truth is.””

“Or he wants you walking into a trap.””

I looked at her.

“Do you know where he is?””

She went quiet.

That answer hurt.

“I’m coming with you,” Jordan said.

I looked at him.

“No.””

“Dad.””

“You’ve been carrying this alone for three years.””

He swallowed.

“But I’m not letting you go alone.””

For the first time that night, I saw my son differently.

Not as someone I needed to protect.

As someone who had been protecting me.

Maya stepped forward.

“I should come too.””

Everyone turned.

“No,” Claire said immediately.

Maya shook her head.

“I started this.””

I softened.

“Maya—”

“I lied.””

Her voice broke.

“I hurt Jordan.””

Jordan looked at her.

“You were scared.””

“But I still did it.””

She wiped her tears.

“If Uncle Marcus planned this, then I need to help fix it.””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to keep my children away from this.

But I realized something.

Marcus had already pulled them into it.

The only way out was through the truth.

An hour later, we arrived at my father’s old house.

The place looked exactly the same.

The cracked driveway.

The dead garden.

The porch light that never worked.

Jordan stood beside me.

“I hate being here.””

“Why?””

He looked at the house.

“Because this is where Uncle Marcus found me.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Jordan looked at the front door.

“The night he threatened me.””

My blood went cold.

“You never told me that part.””

“I know.””

We walked inside.

The air smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Memories.

We went straight to the study.

The room was empty.

Except for one thing.

A small box sitting on the desk.

With my name written on it.

Arthur.

I reached for it.

Then I noticed something.

There was a second name underneath mine.

A name scratched into the wood.

May you like

A name I never expected.

Claire.
