Chapter 3: The Man Outside the Door

The doorbell rang once.

A normal sound.

A sound I had heard thousands of times.

But that night, it felt like a warning.

Nobody moved.

Marcus stood on the porch through the security camera.

Older than I remembered.

His hair had more gray.

His face had deeper lines.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Like he was already ten steps ahead.

“Dad,” Jordan whispered.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Don’t let him in.””

The sentence surprised me.

Not because of the fear in his voice.

Because I had never heard my son afraid of anyone.

Not even Marcus.

Claire stepped closer.

“Arthur, call the police.””

I almost did.

Almost.

But something stopped me.

Maybe it was pride.

Maybe it was the part of me that still remembered Marcus as my little brother.

The boy who slept beside me during thunderstorms.

The boy who cried when our dog died.

The boy who once told me I was the only person in the world he trusted.

Then I remembered the envelope.

The lie.

The manipulation.

The damage he had done.

I opened the door.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Arthur.””

“I need answers.””

I stepped onto the porch.

Marcus smiled.

Not a friendly smile.

A victorious one.

“I knew you’d come out.””

“You used my daughter.””

His smile faded slightly.

“I gave her information.””

“You terrified her.””

“I warned her.””

“About what?””

Marcus lifted the envelope.

“About the truth.””

I stared at it.

“What truth?””

He looked past me.

Toward the living room.

Toward Jordan.

“He knows.””

Jordan stepped forward.

“Stop pretending you care about this family.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Still brave.””

“Still a thief.””

The word hit the air.

Marcus’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You told him,” Marcus said.

I looked at Jordan.

“You should have told me.””

Jordan looked away.

Marcus shook his head.

“You really think that boy understands what happened?””

I stepped closer.

“You’re done playing games.””

Marcus handed me the envelope.

“Open it.””

I didn’t.

“Why?””

“Because once you see what’s inside, you’ll understand why your son stayed silent.””

My fingers tightened.

“Leave my property.””

Marcus looked disappointed.

“Still protecting him.””

“I’m protecting my family.””

He stared at me.

“No, Arthur.””

His voice became quiet.

“You’re protecting the version of your family you created in your head.””

Then he walked away.

Just like that.

No argument.

No threat.

No dramatic goodbye.

He simply left.

Which scared me more.

Because Marcus never walked away without a reason.

I closed the door.

Everyone gathered around.

“What’s inside?”” Claire asked.

I opened it.

The first item was a bank statement.

Then another.

Then another.

My eyes moved across the numbers.

And my heart sank.

Because the accounts weren’t Marcus’s.

They were mine.

“What?”” Claire whispered.

I looked closer.

Money transfers.

Large amounts.

Sent from my personal account.

Three years ago.

The exact time Marcus disappeared.

Jordan stepped closer.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Do you know something about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

But he wasn’t looking at me.

He was looking at the papers.

Like he was searching for something.

Then he pulled out a second document.

A legal form.

His face changed.

“Dad…”

“What?””

He handed it to me.

I read the heading.

My stomach dropped.

It was a power-of-attorney document.

Signed with my name.

Except I had never signed it.

My hands began shaking.

“This is fake.””

Claire whispered:

“Someone forged your signature.””

I looked at the date.

Three years earlier.

The night Marcus left.

Suddenly everything felt connected.

But one question remained.

Who had helped him?

Because forging legal documents required access.

Knowledge.

And opportunity.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Ask Claire why Marcus had her phone that night.*

I stopped breathing.

Claire saw my face.

“What?””

I slowly turned toward my wife.

“Claire…”

Her expression changed.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

I wondered if Marcus was the only person hiding something.
