Chapter 4: The Phone Call

I had spent twenty-seven years believing I knew my wife.

Claire was the person who remembered everyone’s birthdays.

The person who stayed up when our children were sick.

The person who held our family together when life became difficult.

She was my safe place.

Until that moment.

Until one message made me question everything.

“Arthur,” Claire said softly.

I didn’t answer.

“Why are you looking at me like that?””

Because I didn’t know what I was supposed to feel.

Anger?

Fear?

Betrayal?

All of them were fighting inside me.

Jordan noticed.

“Dad?””

I folded the phone into my hand.

“Marcus says you had his phone the night he left.””

Claire went completely still.

The silence answered before she did.

“Maya,” she whispered.

My daughter looked away.

“I didn’t know.””

Claire looked at her.

“What?””

“Maya?””

“I didn’t know this was going to happen.””

Claire’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Maya started crying.

“I found the old phone.””

Everyone stared.

“What old phone?”” I asked.

“The one Uncle Marcus left behind.””

Jordan stood.

“Where?””

“In my closet.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

Maya wiped her face.

“Because Marcus told me to hide it.””

The room went silent again.

I felt like every answer created three more questions.

“Bring it here.””

Maya hesitated.

Then she ran upstairs.

A minute later, she returned holding a cracked black phone.

Claire looked at it.

“I haven’t seen that in years.””

“You recognize it?”” I asked.

She nodded slowly.

“It was Marcus’s.””

I took the phone.

The battery was dead.

But there was a small memory card inside.

Jordan looked at me.

“Dad, don’t.””

“Why?””

“Because whatever is on there…”

He stopped.

“What?””

He looked toward the stairs.

“Whatever is on there is what Marcus wanted you to find.””

I understood.

A trap.

But sometimes traps contained the truth.

I plugged the phone into my laptop.

The screen flickered.

A folder appeared.

One folder.

Named:

*BENNETT FAMILY*

Nobody spoke.

I opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

Photos.

Documents.

Recordings.

And one video.

Created the night Marcus left.

I clicked play.

Marcus appeared on the screen.

Sitting in his car.

His face looked exhausted.

Not evil.

Not angry.

Broken.

“Arthur,” he said.

My chest tightened.

“If you’re watching this, then things went worse than I expected.””

Claire stepped closer.

The video continued.

“I know you think I betrayed you.””

Marcus looked down.

“But I need you to understand something.””

He paused.

“I wasn’t the first person who lied.””

The screen froze.

A loading symbol appeared.

Then the video resumed.

Marcus looked directly into the camera.

“The person who knows everything is…”

The audio cut.

Static filled the room.

Then the phone shut off.

“No,” I whispered.

Jordan grabbed the laptop.

“Is that it?””

I tried restarting it.

Nothing.

The file was damaged.

But one thing remained.

One unfinished sentence.

One missing name.

Claire looked terrified.

“Who was he talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Again.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then I heard breathing.

Slow.

Controlled.

And finally, a whisper.

“Arthur…”

I recognized the voice.

Not Marcus.

Someone else.

Someone inside my house.

The voice said:

“Don’t trust your wife.””

The call ended.

I looked up.

Claire was standing in front of me.

And behind her, on the kitchen counter, was a second phone.

A phone that belonged to my wife.

A phone that was receiving a message.

I walked toward it.

Claire whispered:

“Arthur, wait.””

But I picked it up.

The screen was already unlocked.

One new message.

May you like

From Marcus.

*She still hasn’t told you what she did that night.*
