Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*She still hasn’t told you what she did that night.*

The phone felt heavier in my hand.

Not because of its weight.

Because of what it represented.

A secret.

Another one.

My family had become a house full of locked doors, and every person I loved seemed to be holding a different key.

Claire stood frozen across from me.

“Arthur,” she whispered.

I looked up.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Her eyes filled instantly.

That was the moment I knew.

Not everything.

Not yet.

But enough.

Because people who have nothing to hide usually get angry first.

They demand answers.

They fight.

Claire looked afraid.

“Claire,” I said quietly, “what happened three years ago?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Jordan stepped forward.

“Mom?””

Claire looked at him.

Then at Maya.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t want any of this.””

The sentence hit me.

Because it wasn’t a denial.

“What does that mean?””

She sat down slowly at the kitchen table.

Her hands shook as she covered her face.

“I should have told you.””

Nobody spoke.

The refrigerator hummed.

A car passed outside.

The world continued like our family wasn’t collapsing in our own home.

“I need you to understand something,” Claire said.

I stayed standing.

“I’m listening.””

She looked at the phone on the counter.

“Marcus came to me before he left.””

Jordan’s face changed.

“What?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Three years ago. The night you two fought.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why?””

“He said he needed help.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Help?””

Claire looked at me.

“He was scared.””

“Marcus was scared?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation made me angry.

“Claire.””

“He said he made a mistake.””

The room went silent.

Jordan moved closer.

“What mistake?””

Claire looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“He wouldn’t tell me everything.””

I stepped toward the table.

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Claire swallowed.

“He showed me documents.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What documents?””

“Bank records.””

The same ones Marcus had left behind.

The same ones showing money transfers from my account.

“He told me someone was trying to frame him.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“I didn’t know what to believe!””

Her voice cracked.

For a second, I saw the woman I married.

The woman who had always tried to protect everyone.

But that didn’t erase what she had done.

“You hid this from me for three years.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

The word came out sharper than I intended.

“You were protecting a secret.””

Claire looked down.

Maybe that hurt because it was true.

Jordan walked away from us.

“I can’t believe this.””

“Jordan—”

“No.””

He turned around.

His eyes were red.

“Do you know what it felt like when Dad looked at me tonight?””

Claire froze.

“I thought he believed I was capable of hurting Maya.””

“That’s not true.””

“It was.””

Jordan pointed toward the living room.

“You all looked at me like I was someone else.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Maya started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

Jordan looked at her.

“I know.””

The kindness in his voice made it worse.

Because he was the one who had been hurt.

And he was still trying to protect everyone.

I looked back at Claire.

“Did Marcus give you that phone?””

“No.””

“Then why does he have a message on it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

She stood suddenly.

“Arthur, I am telling you the truth.””

“Are you?””

The question hung between us.

Claire looked like I had slapped her.

And immediately, I hated myself for saying it.

But trust doesn’t break loudly.

Sometimes it cracks quietly.

One question at a time.

“I kept one thing,” she whispered.

My body went still.

“What?””

“A recording.””

“Of what?””

Claire walked to the cabinet near the hallway.

She opened the bottom drawer.

From inside, she pulled out a small flash drive.

“I made this because I was afraid.””

I stared at it.

“Afraid of Marcus?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Claire looked at me.

“The person Marcus was afraid of.””

My stomach dropped.

She handed me the flash drive.

“I never listened to the entire thing.””

“Why?””

“Because the first thirty seconds were enough.””

I plugged it into my laptop.

A single audio file appeared.

Created three years ago.

The night Marcus disappeared.

I clicked play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Marcus’s voice.

“You don’t understand what he’s capable of.””

Another voice answered.

A woman’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

My blood turned cold.

Because it wasn’t Claire.

It wasn’t Maya.

It wasn’t anyone in the room.

It was my mother.

My late mother.

“Marcus,” the recording continued, “you should have never touched that money.””

Nobody moved.

I stared at the laptop.

Impossible.

My mother had died six months before that night.

The recording continued.

Marcus sounded desperate.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“You know what you did.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

“You made it worse.””

A chair scraped.

Then my mother’s voice again.

“You need to tell Arthur the truth before someone else does.””

The audio cut.

The file ended.

Nobody breathed.

Jordan whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I couldn’t answer.

Because he was right.

My mother was dead.

And yet somehow...

she was part of the secret that had destroyed my family.

Then another notification appeared on the laptop.

A new file had downloaded.

Automatically.

The name was simple.

*THE REAL TRUTH*

And beneath it was the date.

Tomorrow.
