Chapter 2: The Secret Between Brothers

The note was only one sentence.

But it felt heavier than a thousand pages.

*Arthur, ask your son what happened the night I left.*

I read it again.

Then again.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Claire noticed.

“What does it say?””

I handed it to her.

She read silently.

Her expression changed.

“Jordan?””

My son didn’t respond.

He was staring at the photograph.

Not the note.

The photograph.

“You know what this is about,” I said.

It wasn’t a question.

Jordan looked at me.

For a moment, he looked like the little boy who used to hide behind my legs when strangers came over.

Then he looked away.

“Jordan.””

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

Those words terrified me.

Because they meant there was something to find out.

Claire sat down on Maya’s bed.

“Somebody explain what is happening.””

Jordan rubbed his face.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“I don’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me now.””

He looked at Maya.

She lowered her head.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Jordan shook his head.

“No. You were scared.””

“You should hate me.””

“I don’t.””

That answer surprised everyone.

Even me.

Jordan looked at his sister.

“You made a mistake because someone manipulated you.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I should have told Dad.””

I waited.

He took a deep breath.

“Three years ago, when Uncle Marcus left, he didn’t just leave because of the argument you had.””

My jaw tightened.

I remembered that night perfectly.

Marcus had shown up at our house drunk.

He had accused me of stealing a business opportunity from him.

We argued.

He said things he couldn’t take back.

Then he disappeared.

I hadn’t seen him since.

“I thought you knew,” Jordan continued.

“Knew what?””

Jordan looked terrified.

“Why he really hated you.””

Nobody spoke.

The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Like the walls were holding secrets.

“Jordan,” I said slowly, “what did you see?””

He looked down.

“I saw Uncle Marcus take money from Grandpa’s old account.””

I froze.

My father’s account.

The one Marcus had managed after our father became sick.

“What?””

Jordan nodded.

“I was fourteen.””

“You were a child.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Uncle Marcus found me.””

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?””

Jordan swallowed.

“He told me nobody would believe me.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Jordan continued.

“He said you would think I was trying to destroy the family.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And you believed him?””

“I was fourteen, Dad.””

The answer broke something inside me.

Not anger.

Guilt.

Because I had spent years believing I knew my children.

But maybe I only knew the parts they showed me.

“What does this have to do with Maya?”” I asked.

Jordan looked toward the hallway.

“Maya found out.””

My eyes moved to my daughter.

She nodded.

“Last month.””

“How?””

“I heard Uncle Marcus talking on the phone.””

“With who?””

“I don’t know.””

Maya hugged herself.

“But he was angry.””

“What did he say?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“He said Jordan had ruined everything.””

Jordan looked down.

“He knows I saw him.””

The room went silent.

Then I understood.

Marcus wasn’t trying to protect a secret.

He was trying to control the people who knew it.

And somehow, he had used my daughter to attack my son.

But one question remained.

“Why accuse Jordan?””

Maya’s eyes filled.

“Because Marcus told me you would listen.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He said you always believed Jordan.””

She looked ashamed.

“He said if I cried and said Jordan scared me, you would finally look at him differently.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Not because I would believe Jordan was guilty.

But because Marcus understood my family better than I did.

He knew exactly where to strike.

Jordan sat on the edge of the bed.

“He wanted us fighting each other.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The picture of my son.

Taken secretly.

A warning.

A threat.

A message.

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone jumped.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

For some reason, I already knew who it was.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a familiar voice.

My brother.

“Arthur.””

My entire body went cold.

“Marcus.””

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to find the envelope.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“You knew?””

Marcus ignored her.

“You should have asked me before accusing your son.””

My blood ran cold.

“You manipulated my daughter.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“Your daughter made her own choices.””

I looked at Maya.

She started crying.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

Then Marcus said:

“I’m exactly where I need to be.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then a notification appeared.

A security alert.

Someone was at our front door.

And when I opened the camera feed...

Marcus was standing outside.

Holding another envelope.

May you like

But this time, it wasn’t for Maya.

It was for me.
