Chapter 9: The Child Hidden From the World
Marcus stared at the photograph.
His fingers trembled.
He had seen thousands of pictures throughout his life.
Family portraits.
Business events.
Childhood memories.
Photographs of his parents.
But this one felt different.
Because something about it was impossible.
He was standing beside his father.
He recognized the old garden behind them.
It was the garden of the Carter family home.
He remembered playing there as a child.
He remembered his father lifting him onto his shoulders.
He remembered thinking that nothing in the world could ever hurt him.
But he didn’t remember the woman standing behind him.
And he didn’t remember the baby in her arms.
The baby wearing a small silver bracelet.
The same bracelet Lily wore.
Marcus slowly turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And one sentence.
*“The Carter family has two heirs.””*
The room became silent.
Marcus looked up.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
He looked at Adrian.
“What is this?””
Adrian’s expression had changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You’ve seen this before.””
Marcus noticed immediately.
“You know.””
Adrian looked away.
“You know.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
Adrian stayed silent.
“Tell me!””
His voice echoed through the room.
Lily looked frightened.
Marcus immediately lowered his voice.
He looked at his daughter.
“I’m sorry.””
He knelt beside her.
“I’m okay.””
But he wasn’t.
Not anymore.
He looked at Adrian.
“Who is the woman?””
Adrian took a deep breath.
“Her name was Claire.””
Marcus frowned.
“Was?””
“Yes.””
“What happened to her?””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“She disappeared.””
Marcus stared.
“Like Sarah?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That answer was enough.
Marcus stood.
“How many people disappeared because of these secrets?””
Nobody responded.
Eleanor slowly walked toward him.
“Marcus…”
He turned.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“I need you to understand.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I needed you to tell me the truth seven years ago.””
Eleanor looked hurt.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
He looked at the photograph.
“But every person you protected ended up suffering.””
The words landed heavily.
Eleanor lowered her head.
For once, she had nothing to say.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“Who was Claire?””
Adrian hesitated.
“She was someone your father loved.””
Marcus froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Marcus laughed softly.
Another impossible truth.
Another piece of a life he thought he understood.
“My father had another family?””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
“Then explain.””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“Claire worked with your father.””
“Worked with him?””
“Yes.””
“In what?””
“Research.””
Marcus frowned.
“What kind of research?””
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
“Genetic research.””
The answer made Marcus pause.
“What?””
“Your father invested in medical research before he focused completely on Carter Industries.””
Marcus looked at the picture.
“And the baby?””
Adrian was quiet.
Then:
“The baby was Claire’s daughter.””
Marcus waited.
“Who was the father?””
Nobody answered.
The silence felt unbearable.
Then Eleanor spoke.
“Your father.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“James had another child.””
The room seemed to spin.
Marcus looked down at Lily.
Then at the photograph.
Then back at Eleanor.
“My father had a daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
Eleanor nodded.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“How long?””
“Since before you were born.””
The pain on his face was impossible to hide.
His whole life had been built on missing pieces.
But this was different.
This wasn’t just a secret.
This was an entire person erased from history.
“Where is she?””
Eleanor looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stared.
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
“Everyone says that.””
His voice broke.
“And everyone has been lying.””
Eleanor looked at him.
“I lost track of her.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian’s face was serious.
“You know where she is.””
Eleanor froze.
Marcus noticed.
“What?””
Adrian looked at her.
“You received the letter.””
Eleanor’s expression changed.
“What letter?””
Marcus looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian spoke slowly.
“After James died, Claire sent Eleanor a letter.””
Marcus stared at his mother.
“Did she?””
Eleanor remained silent.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Did she?””
Finally, Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.””
The answer broke something inside him.
“What did it say?””
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“She wanted help.””
“Help with what?””
“She was afraid.””
“Of who?””
Eleanor looked toward the photograph.
“Of Jonathan.””
The name changed the atmosphere.
Again.
Marcus felt anger rise.
“So Jonathan knew about Claire?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Eleanor swallowed.
“Because Jonathan was the one who found out about the child.””
Marcus looked confused.
“And?””
“He realized the baby could inherit part of James’s estate.””
Marcus understood.
Money.
Control.
Power.
The same things that had destroyed his family.
“He wanted the child gone.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How do you know all this?””
Adrian looked away.
“Because I helped Claire escape.””
Marcus froze.
“You helped her?””
“Yes.””
“Then where is she?””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“She was supposed to meet me.””
“Supposed to?””
“She never arrived.””
Marcus felt a cold feeling.
“When?””
Adrian looked at him.
“The same week Sarah died.””
Silence.
The connection was obvious.
Too obvious.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
Two women.
Two secrets.
Two disappearances.
One person behind them.
Jonathan Pierce.
Marcus walked to the window.
His mind raced.
Everything suddenly connected.
His father’s death.
Sarah’s fear.
Lily’s identity.
The stolen documents.
The missing letter.
Jonathan had been near all of it.
But there was one question.
Why?
Why now?
Why reveal himself?
His phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked.
Marcus checked the screen.
Unknown number.
A message.
*“Come alone if you want the truth.””*
Attached was a location.
Marcus looked at it.
An old warehouse.
The same place where his father had supposedly met Adrian before dying.
Adrian immediately saw the message.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You know that place.””
“Yes.””
“Then you know I have to go.””
“It’s a trap.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Marcus looked toward Lily.
“Because someone has been controlling my family’s story for years.””
He looked back at Adrian.
“I’m done letting them.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You can’t go alone.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I have to.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Your father made the same mistake.””
Marcus stopped.
“What?””
“He thought he could face the truth alone.””
The words hit him.
Adrian continued.
“And it almost killed him.””
Marcus looked at Eleanor.
“What do you know?””
She remained silent.
Then quietly said:
“Jonathan won’t be alone.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Eleanor looked terrified.
“He never worked alone.””
A pause.
“There was always someone helping him.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“Who?””
Eleanor looked toward the hallway.
Toward where Lily was standing.
Then she whispered:
“Someone inside this mansion.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus turned.
The hallway was empty.
But Lily’s small backpack was lying on the floor.
Marcus immediately ran toward it.
He picked it up.
Something was inside.
Something that had not been there before.
A small envelope.
His name was written on it.
Not Marcus.
Not Mr. Carter.
Just one word.
*Daddy.*
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was a child’s drawing.
A picture of Marcus holding Lily’s hand.
But beside them stood another figure.
A tall man.
And above the figure, Lily had written:
*“The man Grandma told me never to talk about.””*
Marcus looked up slowly.
His face changed.
Because behind the drawing was another message.
Written in handwriting he recognized.
Sarah’s handwriting.
*“Marcus, if Lily ever sees this man, run.””*
May you like
And beneath it was one final sentence.
*“Because he is the reason I died.””*
