Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Curtain
The video ended.
The screen went black.
But nobody in the room moved.
Sarah’s final words remained in everyone’s mind.
*“Your mother is not the person you should be afraid of… because she was working for someone else.””*
Marcus stared at the dark screen.
He had spent seven years believing he understood his wife’s final days.
He had built a story in his mind.
Sarah was gone.
Eleanor had helped him raise Lily.
His father’s death had been a tragedy from the past.
And life had simply continued.
But now he realized something terrifying.
The story he had accepted was carefully created.
Someone had written it for him.
Someone had decided what he was allowed to know.
Marcus slowly turned toward Eleanor.
“Who?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Eleanor looked down.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who were you working for?””
The older woman remained silent.
“Mother.””
She flinched.
Not because he raised his voice.
Because of the way he said the word.
There was no warmth.
No trust.
Only a question.
A demand.
Eleanor looked at Adrian.
Then at Vanessa.
Finally, she looked back at Marcus.
“I can’t tell you.””
Marcus stared.
After everything.
After Sarah’s message.
After years of secrets.
That was her answer.
“You can’t?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
He looked around the room.
“I don’t understand anything.””
His eyes returned to her.
“But I understand this.””
He pointed toward the computer.
“My wife left a message warning me.””
Then toward Lily.
“My daughter was afraid in this house.””
Then toward the documents scattered across the office.
“And you still expect me to protect your secrets?””
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Marcus froze.
The sentence was different.
Not an excuse.
A confession.
“What did you say?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“The person behind this doesn’t forgive betrayal.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Who?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“I don’t know his real name.””
Marcus frowned.
“His?””
A silence followed.
Eleanor nodded.
“It was a man.””
The room became colder.
“What did he want?””
Eleanor looked at the floor.
“Control.””
“Of what?””
“Everything your father built.””
Marcus clenched his fists.
“Then why involve Lily?””
“Because James changed his will.””
Adrian answered.
“Lily became the key.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?””
Adrian nodded.
“Not at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“After Sarah died.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“You waited seven years too?””
Adrian accepted the anger.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was being watched.””
Marcus stared.
“Watched by who?””
Adrian looked toward the dark window.
“The same person who just broke into this mansion.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
She held the memory card.
“Sarah didn’t only record the video.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What else?””
“There was another file.””
Adrian immediately stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you mention that?””
“Because it was hidden.””
Vanessa inserted the card again.
The computer screen turned on.
Several files appeared.
One was labeled:
*FOR MARCUS ONLY*
Marcus felt his heart stop.
“Open it.””
Vanessa clicked.
A second video appeared.
Sarah appeared again.
But this time, she looked different.
More afraid.
The room became silent.
“Marcus,” she said.
“If you’re watching this, then the first message was found.””
Marcus frowned.
“Found?””
Sarah continued.
“I had to hide the truth inside another truth.””
Adrian looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah looked directly at the camera.
“Eleanor knows part of what happened.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“But she doesn’t know everything.””
Eleanor looked shocked.
Sarah continued.
“The person controlling everything made Eleanor believe she was protecting the family.””
A pause.
“But she was being used.””
Marcus watched his mother’s reaction.
For the first time, Eleanor looked devastated.
Sarah’s voice trembled.
“Marcus, I need you to understand something.””
She looked down at baby Lily.
“Your mother made terrible choices.””
Marcus’s eyes moved toward Eleanor.
“But she did not make the worst one.””
Everyone waited.
Sarah leaned closer to the camera.
“The person who destroyed our family is someone you know.””
The video glitched.
Then Sarah said:
“Someone who has been close to you since childhood.””
The screen froze.
Marcus stared.
“Someone close to me?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Adrian’s face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“You know something.””
Adrian looked away.
“Adrian.””
Slowly, Adrian answered.
“I have a suspicion.””
“Who?””
He didn’t respond.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
Then said:
“Your father’s lawyer.””
Marcus frowned.
“Jonathan Pierce?””
Adrian nodded.
Marcus remembered.
Jonathan Pierce.
The man who had handled the Carter family’s legal matters for decades.
He had been at the company when Marcus was young.
He attended family events.
He had comforted Marcus after his father’s death.
He had even helped Marcus take control of Carter Industries when he became an adult.
A man Marcus had trusted.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You know him?””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Know him?””
He shook his head.
“He was family.””
Adrian’s expression was serious.
“That’s why he was dangerous.””
Marcus walked toward the window.
His reflection stared back at him.
A man who thought he knew his own life.
A man who now questioned every memory.
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus turned.
“Where is Jonathan Pierce?””
Eleanor spoke quietly.
“He was invited tonight.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“He was supposed to arrive an hour ago.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“He knew.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Knew what?””
“That we were going to expose him.””
A sudden noise came from downstairs.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t anyone’s personal phone.
It was the old landline in Eleanor’s office.
The phone rang again.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Nobody moved.
Then Eleanor whispered:
“He knows we found out.””
Marcus walked toward the phone.
“Don’t.””
Adrian grabbed his arm.
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
“Don’t answer.””
“Why?””
“Because if it’s him…”
Marcus pulled his arm away.
“Then I need to hear what he has to say.””
He picked up the phone.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“Marcus.””
His blood went cold.
He knew that voice.
Everyone knew that voice.
It belonged to the man who had signed his first business contracts.
The man who had stood beside his family for decades.
Jonathan Pierce.
“You finally started asking questions.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
A quiet laugh came from the other end.
“Still trying to control everything, just like your father.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
Jonathan sighed.
“I protected an empire.””
“You destroyed my family.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Your father destroyed it when he thought he could betray me.””
Marcus froze.
“Betray you?””
The line went silent.
Then Jonathan said:
“You really don’t know anything, do you?””
Marcus looked around the room.
Everyone was listening.
Jonathan continued.
“Your father wasn’t killed because he discovered my crimes.””
A pause.
“He was killed because he discovered what I was protecting.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Jonathan’s voice lowered.
“It means James Carter wasn’t protecting his company.””
Another pause.
“He was protecting you.””
Marcus looked toward Lily.
Then Jonathan said the words that made the room freeze.
“Because your father knew the truth about your birth.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
“What truth?””
Jonathan laughed softly.
“The truth Eleanor and Sarah spent years hiding.””
The phone crackled.
Then his final words came through.
“Marcus… Lily isn’t the only child in your family with a secret.””
The call ended.
And on the desk beside the phone…
A photograph appeared.
A photograph that had not been there before.
Marcus picked it up.
His hands started shaking.
Because the picture showed him as a child.
Standing beside his father.
And behind them…
Was a woman Marcus had never seen before.
May you like
Holding a baby.
A baby wearing a bracelet identical to Lily’s.
