Chapter 5: The Betrayal Hidden Behind Friendship

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Not loud chaos.

Not shouting.

Something worse.

A room full of people trying to understand what they had just heard.

Every eye turned toward Adrian Blackwood.

The man who had walked into the mansion claiming to reveal the truth.

The man who had brought evidence.

The man who had spoken about loyalty and betrayal.

Now Eleanor was pointing directly at him.

Marcus stood frozen.

His mind struggled to process everything.

His mother had admitted she knew something about his father’s death.

Adrian had admitted he had been the last person to speak with James Carter.

And now Eleanor was saying Adrian was responsible.

It felt like every person in his life had been hiding something.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Say something.””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was enough to make the room uncomfortable.

Marcus’s voice became sharper.

“Say something.””

Adrian slowly looked at him.

“I knew this moment would come.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Adrian looked down.

“It isn’t.””

He took a deep breath.

“But the answer is not as simple as your mother wants you to believe.””

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

She held the folder against her chest.

“Everyone is innocent except the person who was caught.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You admitted you knew about my father.””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“I did.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

The honesty shocked him.

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

Eleanor looked away.

“Because you were already broken.””

Marcus felt anger rise again.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.””

“I was your mother.””

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“You were my mother when it was convenient.””

The words hit her.

For a second, Eleanor looked older.

Not powerful.

Just tired.

But Marcus couldn’t forget Lily’s tears.

He couldn’t forget the way she had been made to feel unwanted.

He couldn’t forget the years of lies.

He turned back to Adrian.

“What happened that night?””

Adrian looked at him.

“I told you.””

“You told me your version.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“I want the truth.””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“You deserve that.””

The room became silent.

Adrian walked toward the center of the ballroom.

“I was the one who called your father that night.””

Marcus listened.

“He asked me to meet him.””

“Where?””

“At an old warehouse owned by our company.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why there?””

“Because he didn’t trust anyone.””

The answer hurt.

Because Marcus understood.

James Carter had spent his final days surrounded by people he suspected.

Adrian continued.

“He had discovered money was missing from company accounts.””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“And he thought it was her?””

Adrian hesitated.

“Not at first.””

That surprised Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked down.

“Your father believed the person responsible was someone in finance.””

A pause.

“Someone who had access.””

Marcus waited.

“Who?””

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“Someone who worked closely with him.””

Marcus felt a strange feeling.

A memory.

A name.

Someone he had heard growing up.

“Who?””

Adrian looked directly at him.

“Your uncle.””

The room reacted.

Marcus froze.

“My uncle?””

“Your father’s younger brother.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because my uncle died before I was born.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

The silence returned.

Marcus stared.

“You’re saying my dead uncle was involved?””

“No.””

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

“I’m saying someone used his name.””

Marcus turned.

“Explain.””

Adrian sighed.

“Your father discovered that money was being moved through accounts connected to your uncle’s old business records.””

Marcus frowned.

“But he was dead.””

“Exactly.””

A cold feeling moved through Marcus.

Someone had created a trail.

A false one.

Someone wanted James to believe something.

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“Did you know?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence was becoming unbearable.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Did you know?””

Her voice was quiet.

“Yes.””

The room reacted.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another wound.

“You knew someone was stealing from the company?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was afraid.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

“Of who?””

Eleanor looked toward Adrian.

“Of him.””

Everyone turned.

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

Eleanor’s voice grew stronger.

“You were there.””

Adrian stared at her.

“You know what happened.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Enough.””

Both stopped.

He pointed at Adrian.

“You.””

Then at Eleanor.

“You.””

His voice carried through the ballroom.

“I am tired of half-truths.””

Nobody spoke.

“My father died.””

His eyes became red.

“And for years, I was told he abandoned me.””

He looked at Eleanor.

“You let me hate him.””

Then he looked at Adrian.

“You knew the truth.””

Adrian lowered his head.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The question was not angry anymore.

It was painful.

“Why did everyone let me believe a lie?””

Adrian looked away.

“Because your father asked me to.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Adrian nodded.

“The last conversation I had with James was not about money.””

He paused.

“It was about you.””

Marcus felt his breath catch.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Adrian’s voice softened.

“He knew something dangerous was happening.””

“What?””

“He knew if the truth came out, people would come after his family.””

Marcus looked toward the sitting room where Lily was waiting.

His daughter.

His family.

Adrian continued.

“He told me to protect you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By disappearing?””

Adrian looked ashamed.

“I failed.””

The admission was heavy.

Marcus studied him.

“Then tell me what happened after you left that warehouse.””

Adrian remained silent.

Marcus noticed.

“What?””

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

Then back at him.

“There was someone else there.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Who?””

Adrian’s face became serious.

“I don’t know.””

The answer surprised everyone.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Adrian swallowed.

“When I arrived, your father was alive.””

A pause.

“He was angry.””

“About what?””

“He had found the person behind the stolen money.””

Marcus waited.

“And?””

“He told me if anything happened to him, I needed to find Sarah and protect Lily.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Why Sarah?””

“Because he knew she was already being threatened.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

His mother looked away.

“Threatened by who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who?””

Adrian whispered:

“The same person who arranged your father’s death.””

A heavy silence followed.

Then Eleanor suddenly spoke.

“You still don’t understand.””

Marcus turned.

Her expression was different now.

Not defensive.

Desperate.

“Your father didn’t die because of money.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why?””

Eleanor looked at Lily’s direction.

“Because of the child.””

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

“Lily?””

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“James discovered the truth about Sarah’s pregnancy.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“No.””

Eleanor continued.

“He knew Lily’s existence would expose everything.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Expose what?””

Eleanor stared at him.

“The reason Sarah disappeared.””

Marcus’s voice became a whisper.

“What reason?””

Eleanor looked toward the staircase.

Then said:

“Because Sarah wasn’t running from us.””

A pause.

“She was running from someone who wanted Lily gone.””

The entire room went silent.

Marcus felt his arms tighten.

The thought of anyone wanting to hurt his daughter made his entire body go cold.

“Who?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Adrian.

And for the first time, Marcus saw something they both shared.

Fear.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

The ballroom disappeared into darkness.

Someone screamed.

Glass shattered.

Marcus immediately reached for his daughter.

“Lily!””

But before he could find her, a voice came from the darkness.

A voice that made Adrian freeze.

“You should have stayed away from the truth.””

Then a loud crash echoed from the hallway.

And when the emergency lights flickered back on…

The black folder containing the evidence was gone.
