Chapter 7: The Last Message From Sarah

Marcus stared at the phone in his hand.

The screen remained bright.

The message sat there like a wound that refused to close.

*“Ask your mother why she let Sarah die.””*

For several seconds, Marcus couldn’t move.

The entire world seemed to narrow down to those words.

Not the broken window.

Not the shattered glass across the floor.

Not the people standing behind him.

Only the sentence.

Only the accusation.

He slowly turned around.

His eyes found Eleanor.

“Is this true?””

The question was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Eleanor looked at the phone.

Then at Marcus.

Her face lost all color.

“Marcus…”

He took a step forward.

“Is this true?””

“I…”

She stopped.

That hesitation destroyed something inside him.

Because after everything.

After all the lies.

After all the secrets.

He still hoped she would deny it immediately.

He hoped she would be angry.

He hoped she would call it impossible.

But she didn’t.

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“You let Sarah die?””

Lily, standing near Adrian, looked confused.

“Daddy…”

Marcus immediately looked at her.

The anger in his face softened.

He couldn’t let her see him break.

He walked over and knelt.

“Sweetheart.””

Lily looked at him.

“Is Grandma bad?””

The question was simple.

Childlike.

And painful.

Marcus looked away for a moment.

Because he didn’t know how to answer.

How do you explain betrayal to a child?

How do you explain that the people who promise to protect you can sometimes be the ones who hurt you?

He gently held her hand.

“Some people make choices they shouldn’t make.””

Lily looked down.

“Did Grandma make a bad choice?””

Marcus had no answer.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Lily, why don’t you come with me for a moment?””

Marcus looked at him.

Then nodded.

This time, Lily didn’t argue.

She held Adrian’s hand carefully.

As they walked away, Marcus watched them.

A strange feeling passed through him.

Adrian was a stranger.

A man who had appeared in his life only hours ago.

Yet he understood something Eleanor never had.

Lily needed honesty.

Not another lie.

When they were gone, Marcus turned back.

“Now tell me.””

Eleanor looked exhausted.

“I didn’t kill Sarah.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s not what I asked.””

A silence followed.

“I asked if you let her die.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

The answer came slowly.

“Yes.””

Marcus felt like he had been punched.

Adrian stopped walking.

Even from across the room, he heard.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus couldn’t speak.

Finally, he whispered:

“Why?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything.””

Marcus laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“You lost everything anyway.””

Eleanor looked down.

“I know.””

He stepped closer.

“Start from the beginning.””

She remained silent.

Marcus’s voice hardened.

“Start.””

Eleanor sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked like an old woman.

Not a powerful woman.

Not a wealthy woman.

Just someone carrying the weight of terrible decisions.

“Sarah came to me before Lily was born.””

Marcus listened.

“She was scared.””

“Because of Adrian?””

“No.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“She was scared because of James.””

Marcus frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

She looked at him.

“But your father had discovered something.””

“What?””

Eleanor took a breath.

“Someone was trying to take control of Carter Industries.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I never knew the full plan.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“But you knew enough.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“What did you know?””

Eleanor looked toward the broken window.

“Sarah found documents.””

Marcus froze.

“What documents?””

“Documents showing someone had been using the company to move illegal money.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“And James found out.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Then why blame Adrian?””

Eleanor looked at Adrian.

“Because I thought he was involved.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“You thought?””

“Yes.””

She looked back at Marcus.

“James trusted him more than anyone.””

“That doesn’t mean he betrayed him.””

“I know that now.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You know that now?””

His voice rose.

“After all these years?””

Eleanor looked away.

“After Sarah died.””

The room became quiet.

Marcus stared.

“What happened to Sarah?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“I warned her.””

“About what?””

“About the danger.””

Marcus waited.

“But she didn’t listen.””

“What danger?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“The person behind everything.””

Marcus felt frustrated.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I never knew who it was.””

“Then why did Sarah die?””

Eleanor swallowed.

“Because someone wanted her silent.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Marcus looked at the phone again.

“Someone sent this message.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“What about you?””

Adrian walked closer.

“I believe Sarah knew.””

“Knew what?””

“Who was behind it.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then why didn’t she tell anyone?””

Adrian’s expression became painful.

“Because she was protecting Lily.””

Marcus looked toward the hallway where his daughter stood.

“She knew Lily would be targeted?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Lily inherited something.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Eleanor looked away.

Marcus turned.

“What did she inherit?””

Nobody answered.

His patience disappeared.

“What did my daughter inherit?””

Adrian finally spoke.

“Your father’s shares.””

Marcus frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“James changed his will before he died.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“To make sure nobody could take control of the company.””

Marcus understood.

Slowly.

Lily wasn’t just a child.

She was connected to the future of Carter Industries.

A target.

A reason.

A threat.

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Lily could be in danger.””

“Yes.””

“And you still took money meant for her.””

Eleanor looked ashamed.

“I made mistakes.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Mistakes?””

He looked around.

“Sarah died.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“My daughter was afraid.””

Then back at Eleanor.

“And you call that mistakes?””

Eleanor had no answer.

Suddenly, Vanessa stepped forward.

“There’s something you need to see.””

Everyone looked at her.

She held something in her hand.

A small memory card.

Marcus frowned.

“What is that?””

Vanessa looked at Eleanor.

“Sarah gave this to me.””

Eleanor’s face changed.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

Marcus immediately reached for it.

“What’s on it?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Sarah’s final message.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“A message?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She recorded it because she knew she might not get another chance.””

Marcus looked at the memory card.

His hands tightened.

“Play it.””

Vanessa looked uncertain.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She connected it to a nearby computer.

The screen flickered.

Then a video appeared.

And there she was.

Sarah.

Younger.

Tired.

Holding a newborn Lily.

Marcus stopped breathing.

His wife.

The woman he had lost.

The woman whose voice he had not heard in years.

The video began.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus…”

His eyes filled instantly.

Even after all this time, hearing his name from her lips hurt.

“I don’t know if you’ll ever see this.””

She looked down at Lily.

“But if you do, it means something went wrong.””

Marcus couldn’t look away.

Sarah continued.

“I need you to know something.””

She took a shaky breath.

“I never stopped loving you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Then Sarah said the words that changed everything.

“The truth about Lily’s father isn’t the secret you think it is.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

Sarah looked terrified.

“The real secret is who wanted you to believe she wasn’t yours.””

The video paused for a second.

Then Sarah whispered:

“Marcus, trust nobody who tells you I betrayed you.””

A tear rolled down his face.

Then the screen suddenly glitched.

The final seconds appeared.

Sarah looked behind the camera.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

And before the recording ended, she whispered one final sentence.

A sentence that made Marcus freeze.

“Your mother is not the person you should be afraid of…”

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“…because she was working for someone else.””
