Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Return

The front doors of the Harrington Estate opened slowly.

A cold breeze entered the ballroom, moving through the expensive curtains and causing the flames of the tall candles to flicker.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Every person inside the room stared toward the entrance.

Marcus felt Lily’s arms tighten around his neck.

The little girl was shaking.

“Daddy…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Marcus immediately looked down at her.

“I’m here.””

But his eyes remained fixed on the doorway.

Because whoever was standing outside had already changed everything.

The truth about Lily.

The secret about Sarah.

The mysterious man in the photograph.

All of it had led to this moment.

A shadow appeared in the doorway.

Then a man stepped inside.

He was tall.

Older.

Maybe in his late forties.

His dark coat was expensive but simple. His hair was slightly gray at the temples, and his face carried the tired expression of someone who had spent years running from something.

The moment Marcus saw him, he felt a strange familiarity.

Not recognition.

Something worse.

A feeling that this person had been connected to his life without his knowledge.

The man looked around the ballroom.

His eyes stopped on Eleanor.

Then on Vanessa.

Then finally on Marcus.

For several seconds, nobody said anything.

Then the man spoke.

“Eleanor.””

Her face changed.

The confidence disappeared.

“Adrian.””

The name moved through the room.

Several guests whispered.

“Adrian?””

“Is that Adrian Blackwood?””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“You know him?””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You know this man?””

Eleanor remained silent.

The stranger walked farther into the room.

His eyes stayed on Lily.

And when he saw her, something painful crossed his face.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Regret.

“I never thought I would see her.””

Marcus immediately moved between them.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

The man stopped.

“I understand why you feel that way.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand anything.””

Adrian looked at him.

“No. You’re right.””

His voice was quiet.

“I don’t.””

Marcus held Lily tighter.

“Then start explaining.””

The guests watched.

Nobody dared interrupt.

Adrian looked toward the photograph still in Marcus’s hand.

“You found out.””

Marcus said nothing.

Adrian sighed.

“I hoped it would never happen this way.””

“Never happen?””

Marcus’s anger grew.

“My entire life has been built on a lie, and you’re standing there talking about how you hoped?””

Adrian looked down.

“I deserve that.””

“Who are you?””

The question hung in the air.

Adrian looked at Lily.

Then back at Marcus.

“My name is Adrian Blackwood.””

He paused.

“And I am Lily’s biological father.””

The ballroom exploded with whispers.

Marcus felt like the ground beneath him had shifted.

For a moment, he couldn’t breathe.

He looked at Lily.

She looked terrified.

And that hurt him more than the confession.

Because regardless of biology, regardless of documents, regardless of secrets…

She was still his little girl.

Marcus turned back to Adrian.

“You walk into my home—”

“This isn’t your home.””

The words came from Eleanor.

Everyone turned.

Marcus slowly looked at his mother.

“What?””

Eleanor’s face was cold again.

“Adrian is the rightful heir to this estate.””

Marcus stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Eleanor crossed her arms.

“You never asked why your father chose to leave this mansion.””

The room became silent.

Marcus felt a memory surface.

His father.

A man he barely knew.

A man who disappeared from his life when Marcus was young.

Growing up, Eleanor always told him the same thing.

“Your father abandoned us.””

Marcus had believed it.

For decades.

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

“Don’t do this.””

She looked at him.

“You lost the right to tell me what to do years ago.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What happened?””

Neither answered.

Marcus’s voice rose.

“What happened?””

Adrian looked away.

Then he spoke.

“Your father and I were partners.””

Marcus frowned.

“Partners?””

“In business.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

Adrian continued.

“Before your father built the company that you inherited, he worked with my family.””

Eleanor interrupted.

“That partnership ended because Adrian betrayed us.””

Adrian looked at her.

“That’s not what happened.””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“Which one is true?””

Eleanor didn’t respond.

For years, Marcus had thought he understood his family history.

Now he realized he knew almost nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Sarah knew.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“She knew about everything.””

The mention of Sarah immediately changed his expression.

“Don’t.””

“She found out the truth before she died.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“She wanted to tell you.””

“No.””

His voice became louder.

“You don’t get to use her name.””

Adrian looked at him with sadness.

“She loved you.””

Marcus said nothing.

“She loved you more than anyone.””

“Then why?””

His voice broke.

“Why would she hide something like this?””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of Eleanor.””

The ballroom went quiet.

Everyone looked at the elderly woman.

Eleanor’s face remained expressionless.

But her hands had tightened.

Marcus noticed.

“You were afraid of my mother?””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“She had power.””

Eleanor laughed.

“This is ridiculous.””

Adrian ignored her.

“Your mother knew Sarah was pregnant before you did.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

“She knew Sarah was having a child.””

Adrian continued.

“And she knew the child was mine.””

Marcus felt his heart sink.

“No.””

“She offered Sarah money.””

The room gasped.

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“She offered Sarah money?””

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“Be careful.””

Adrian continued.

“She told Sarah to disappear.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because Eleanor believed a child with my blood would destroy everything she wanted.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who had held his hand as a child.

The woman he had trusted.

“Is this true?””

Eleanor remained silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Is this true?””

Her expression finally cracked.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was protecting this family.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“You were controlling it.””

Lily buried her face against him again.

Marcus looked at her.

Then at Adrian.

“I don’t care what any document says.””

Adrian watched him carefully.

Marcus continued.

“She is my daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian nodded.

“I know.””

That surprised Marcus.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“I know because Sarah told me.””

Marcus frowned.

“Told you what?””

Adrian took a deep breath.

“She told me that the man who raised Lily would be her real father.””

Those words hit differently.

Marcus didn’t expect them.

Adrian continued.

“Sarah knew love mattered more than blood.””

For the first time that night, Marcus saw something human in Adrian.

Pain.

The same pain he carried.

“You stayed away for seven years?””

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Sarah asked me to.””

Marcus froze.

“She asked you?””

Adrian nodded.

“She knew Eleanor would use me against you. She knew Lily would become a target.””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“And you still came here tonight.””

Adrian looked toward Lily.

“I heard she was in danger.””

Marcus frowned.

“What danger?””

Before Adrian could answer, Lily suddenly spoke.

“Daddy…”

Everyone looked down.

The little girl was crying again.

Marcus knelt slightly.

“What happened?””

She looked at Eleanor.

“She told me you didn’t want me anymore.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“She said that?””

Lily nodded.

“She said when you found out the truth, you would send me away.””

The ballroom went silent.

Marcus slowly stood.

Every emotion inside him turned into one thing.

Cold anger.

He looked at Eleanor.

“You told my daughter that?””

Eleanor opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

Marcus took one step forward.

“You made her afraid that I would leave her.””

“Marcus—”

“No.””

His voice echoed across the ballroom.

“You don’t get to explain this.””

He looked at every guest watching.

“You all saw what happened tonight.””

Then he turned back to Eleanor.

“You didn’t protect my daughter.””

A pause.

“You hurt her.””

Eleanor’s face became pale.

Then suddenly, Adrian spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Adrian reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a small black folder.

“I didn’t come here only because of Lily.””

Marcus stared.

“What’s inside?””

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

“Proof.””

The elderly woman’s expression changed immediately.

For the first time all night…

She looked afraid.

Marcus noticed.

“What proof?””

Adrian opened the folder slightly.

“Proof that Eleanor didn’t just hide Lily’s identity.””

He looked directly at Marcus.

“She also hid the truth about your father’s death.””

The ballroom went silent.

Marcus felt his blood turn cold.

“My father died in an accident.””

Adrian slowly shook his head.

“No, Marcus.””

He closed the folder.

“It wasn’t an accident.””

Marcus stared.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian looked toward Eleanor.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Your mother knows exactly what happened the night your father died.””
