Chapter 8: The Thirty Minutes They Erased

Patricia Lawson woke up shortly after midnight.

Detective Miller called us as soon as the hospital confirmed she was conscious.

By 1:20 a.m., Daniel, Evelyn, my mother, and I were standing outside a private room at St. Mary's Hospital.

I hadn't been inside that building since my father died.

The smell of disinfectant brought everything back.

The cold hallway.

The closed casket.

Vanessa telling me that there was no reason to see him.

My mother held my hand.

“You don't have to go in if you're not ready.””

I looked at the door.

“I've been waiting two years to hear the truth.””

Detective Miller opened it.

Patricia Lawson was sitting upright in bed.

She was in her late fifties, with short gray hair and a bandage around her forehead.

When she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“Nia.””

I stepped closer.

“You know me?””

She nodded.

“I held you when you were born.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“Your father brought you to the hospital when you were three weeks old. He was so proud. He showed you to everyone on the night shift.””

She smiled faintly.

“He said you were going to be a designer one day.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“He said that?””

“Every time he visited.””

I pulled a chair beside her bed.

“Did you see him the night he died?””

Patricia's expression changed.

“Yes.””

“Was he conscious?””

“For part of the time.””

“Did he ask for me?””

She nodded.

“Over and over.””

I looked down.

“Why didn't I get to see him?””

Patricia began crying.

“Because Vanessa told the staff you were in another state. She said your father had specifically requested that you not be brought to the hospital.””

I shook my head.

“He would never have said that.””

“I know.””

Patricia reached for a tissue.

“I knew something was wrong, but I was afraid. Vanessa had connections with the hospital board, and Richard Hale had already spoken to the administrator.””

Detective Miller stepped forward.

“Let's take this one step at a time. Tell us exactly what happened.””

Patricia closed her eyes.

Then she began.

“Thomas Carter arrived at approximately 9:48 p.m. His condition was critical, but he was still alive. He had multiple injuries, and his blood pressure was dropping.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“He was taken into emergency surgery,” Patricia continued.

“The doctors managed to stabilize him briefly.””

“Then what happened?”” I asked.

“Vanessa arrived.””

Patricia's fingers tightened around the blanket.

“She was crying. She told everyone that her husband had been involved in a terrible accident. But she wasn't asking about his condition.””

“What was she asking?””

“She wanted to know whether he had brought anything with him.””

I leaned forward.

“What?””

“Documents. A briefcase. A phone.””

Daniel exchanged a look with Evelyn.

“Did he have those things?””

Patricia nodded.

“He had a small black phone and a folded piece of paper in his jacket.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

The phone Amara had found.

The paper must have been something else.

“Did Vanessa take them?””

“Richard came in shortly afterward. He spoke with the hospital administrator. Then he entered Thomas's room.””

Miller wrote something down.

“Did he touch the patient?””

Patricia nodded slowly.

“He leaned over the bed and whispered something.””

“What?””

“I couldn't hear all of it. But I heard Thomas say, 'You promised her.''”

I looked at Daniel.

“Promised who?””

Patricia shook her head.

“I don't know.””

She continued.

“Then Richard asked him where the original records were. Thomas refused to answer.””

“What happened next?””

“Richard left. Vanessa stayed.””

Patricia began trembling.

“She asked me to bring a form for a treatment refusal.””

I frowned.

“What kind of form?””

“A document stating that Thomas had refused further medical intervention.””

My blood ran cold.

“Was it true?””

“No.””

Patricia looked directly at me.

“Your father never refused treatment.””

Detective Miller leaned closer.

“Did you witness Vanessa sign the document?””

“Yes.””

“Did you report it?””

“I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“The hospital administrator told me to stay out of it. He said the family had made a decision.””

I stared at her.

“What did Vanessa do?””

Patricia looked toward the window.

“She asked me to leave the room.””

“And you did?””

“No.””

For the first time, her voice became firm.

“I had been a nurse for thirty-one years. I wasn't going to abandon a patient because someone with money told me to.””

I felt tears filling my eyes.

“What happened?””

Patricia looked at me.

“Your father woke up.””

My heart stopped.

“He did?””

“Yes.””

She began crying.

“He was confused. He asked where he was. Then he asked for you.””

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

Patricia continued.

“I told him you were safe. I didn't know whether that was true, but I wanted him to be calm.””

“What did he say?””

She swallowed.

“He asked me to bring him his phone.””

I looked at Daniel.

“He wanted the phone?””

“Yes. He said there was a message he needed to send.””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“He told me to contact Amara. He said she had to come home because the truth was finally ready to come out.””

My mother started sobbing.

Patricia reached toward her.

“I'm sorry. I should have found a way to contact you sooner.””

Amara shook her head.

“You tried. That's what matters.””

I looked at Patricia.

“Then why did Dad die?””

The room became silent.

Patricia looked at Detective Miller.

“I need to tell you something that I haven't told anyone.””

Miller nodded.

“Go ahead.””

“Thomas was improving. His blood pressure had stabilized. The surgeon believed he had a reasonable chance of surviving the night.””

I gripped the chair.

“Then what happened?””

“Vanessa returned to the room.””

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

“She told me she wanted a private moment with her husband.””

I felt cold.

“I stepped into the hallway. But I didn't go far.””

“What did you hear?””

Patricia looked at me.

“She told him that she knew where the documents were.””

My stomach tightened.

“And he told her?””

“He said the documents were already protected.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Did she threaten him?””

Patricia nodded.

“She said, 'Then you leave me no choice.''”

The room went silent.

“What happened after that?”” Miller asked.

Patricia's voice became barely audible.

“She disconnected a monitor.””

My mother gasped.

I couldn't breathe.

“Which one?””

“The monitor connected to his oxygen support.””

Detective Miller immediately stood.

“Are you certain?””

Patricia nodded.

“I reconnected it. She told me she had only been adjusting the wires. But I knew what I had seen.””

I stared at her.

“Did you tell the doctors?””

“I tried. But the administrator removed me from the case. By the time I returned, Thomas had suffered another crisis.””

My voice broke.

“Was that what killed him?””

Patricia began crying.

“I believe it contributed to his death. But I cannot tell you exactly what happened after I was forced out of the room.””

Miller was already writing.

“That's enough to reopen the medical investigation. We'll need your formal statement.””

Patricia nodded.

Then she reached beneath her pillow.

“I kept something.””

She handed me a small folded paper.

It was a hospital wristband.

My father's name was printed across it.

But on the back, someone had written a series of numbers.

I looked at them.

“What are these?””

Patricia shook her head.

“Your father wrote them before he became unconscious. He told me to give them to his daughter if she ever came looking.””

Daniel examined the numbers.

“They look like an account reference.””

Evelyn took out her phone.

“I recognize this format.””

She searched through her records.

Then she looked up.

“It's a storage account.””

“What does that mean?””

“Your father maintained a separate digital archive outside the company.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“The original records.””

I stared at the numbers.

“Where is it?””

Evelyn checked the account information.

“There's a secondary location registered in Savannah.””

My mother looked at me.

“Savannah?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your father may have been keeping something close to Amara.””

I turned toward my mother.

She looked equally confused.

Then she whispered:

“There was an old sewing studio near the waterfront. Thomas rented it for me years ago.””

Daniel looked up.

“Do you still have access?””

“I don't know. I haven't been there since I disappeared.””

Detective Miller stepped forward.

“We'll arrange a search warrant if necessary.””

But before anyone could move, Patricia grabbed my wrist.

“Nia.””

I turned.

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Your father wasn't smiling because he was happy.””

I remembered the note someone had left on her hospital pillow.

Ask Nia why her father was smiling when he died.

Patricia continued.

“He was smiling because he had recognized someone.””

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“The person who entered his room after Vanessa left.””

My heart began pounding.

“Who was it?””

Patricia looked toward the doorway.

Then back at me.

“Your father thought it was someone who had come to save him.””

She began crying.

“But it wasn't.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Who?””

Patricia whispered:

“Your father's own brother.””

I stared at her.

I had never known my father had a brother.

Not once in eighteen years had he mentioned having a sibling.

Daniel looked shocked.

Evelyn slowly sat down.

“That's impossible.””

Patricia shook her head.

“No. His name was Michael Carter.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is Michael?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your father's older brother. He disappeared from the family years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas accused him of stealing company money.””

My mind raced.

Another brother.

Another betrayal.

Another person connected to the night my father died.

I turned toward Patricia.

“What did he do?””

She started crying harder.

“He told your father he was there to help him escape.””

“And?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“He took the documents.””

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Before he left, he told Vanessa that the girl would never inherit a single dollar.””

We left the hospital just before dawn.

The city was quiet, but I couldn't stop thinking about what Patricia had told us.

My father's brother had been in the room.

He had taken the documents.

And he had apparently been working with Vanessa.

Daniel drove while Evelyn contacted the attorney.

My mother sat beside me in the back seat.

For the first time, she seemed frightened of something beyond Vanessa.

“Amara?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Did you know my father had a brother?””

She shook her head.

“Thomas told me they had a difficult childhood, but he never explained why.””

“Did he ever mention Michael?””

“Once.””

“What did he say?””

She stared out the window.

“He said Michael had been the person he trusted most until money became more important than family.””

I looked down.

My father had spent his life trying to protect everyone.

And almost everyone around him had betrayed him.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

*You have heard Patricia's version.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*Now hear mine.*

Then a photograph.

An older man stood outside the Carter mansion.

He had silver hair, a familiar jawline, and the same eyes as my father.

Under the photograph was a name.

*MICHAEL CARTER.*

The next message read:

Your father didn't die because Vanessa wanted his money.

He died because he was protecting the wrong person.

I looked at Daniel.

He saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the messages.

Then slowly pulled the car to the side of the road.

“That's Michael.””

My heart pounded.

“Where is he?””

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

Then he pointed to the location tag.

*Carter Textile Headquarters.*

The same building where we had found the vault.

The same building where Vanessa and Richard had searched for the documents.

I looked toward the horizon.

“Take me there.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Nia, we need police protection.””

“I don't care.””

He turned toward me.

“You need to understand something. If Michael is involved, he may be more dangerous than Vanessa.””

I looked at the photograph again.

For the first time, I saw something strange.

The man was wearing a silver watch.

My father had owned an identical one.

And on the watch face was a tiny engraving.

*T.C.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Why is my uncle wearing my father's watch?””

Daniel's expression darkened.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Because he took it from the hospital.””
