Chapter 10: The Last Secret My Father Left Behind
“Five million dollars.””
The words echoed through the room.
I stared at Daniel.
He didn't deny it.
He didn't even try to explain.
He simply lowered his eyes and placed both hands on the table.
“Nia, there's something you need to understand.””
I stepped backward.
“No. You need to understand something. You have spent the last two days telling me you wanted to help me find the truth. You knew about my father's death.
You knew about Vanessa. You knew about Richard. And you never mentioned five million dollars.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I knew what it would sound like.””
“It sounds like you were paid to kill my father.””
His face tightened.
“I didn't kill Thomas.””
“Then why did you take the money?””
He looked toward Detective Miller.
Miller immediately stepped between us.
“Daniel, I suggest you answer that question carefully.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he reached inside his jacket and removed a small black envelope.
“I've carried this for eight years.””
He placed it on the table.
“Thomas gave it to me the morning he died.””
I stared at the envelope.
My father's handwriting was unmistakable.
*FOR NIA. WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW THE TRUTH.*
My knees almost gave way.
“Why didn't you give it to me?””
“Because he made me promise not to.””
“I'm eighteen now!””
“I know.””
“Then open it!””
Daniel looked at Detective Miller.
“Before I do, you need to understand that the money wasn't payment for killing Thomas. It was payment for keeping someone alive.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
He looked directly at me.
“You.””
The room became silent.
Daniel continued.
“Eight years ago, Thomas discovered that Richard Hale and Michael had been moving money out of Carter Textile Group. At first, he thought it was ordinary financial fraud. Then he discovered that they had been using his signature to authorize transactions he had never approved.””
Evelyn nodded.
“That explains the missing accounts.””
Daniel continued.
“Thomas confronted them. He threatened to report everything to federal investigators. Richard responded by threatening his family.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“His family?””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew about Nia's medical condition. He knew Thomas was desperate to find a way to pay for her treatment. And he knew Thomas would do almost anything to protect her.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What did he threaten?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He threatened to make your eyesight problem worse.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He had obtained information about your medical treatment. He knew your specialist. He knew which medications you were taking. He threatened to interfere with your care if Thomas didn't cooperate.””
I remembered the missing medical payments.
The appointments Vanessa had canceled.
The prescriptions that had suddenly become too expensive.
For two years, I had believed those things happened because Vanessa didn't care.
Now I wondered how much worse the truth was.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter and a small flash drive.
He unfolded the letter.
“Thomas wrote this in the car.””
His voice trembled as he read.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.
Richard has made it clear that he will not stop until he controls the company. Michael has chosen money over family. Vanessa knows more than she admits.
I don't know who I can trust anymore.
But I know one thing.
My daughter must survive.
Daniel stopped reading.
I reached for the letter.
“Keep going.””
He swallowed.
The five million dollars is not yours to keep. It belongs to Nia. It is to be held in a protected account until she turns eighteen, and it must be used for her medical treatment and education.
If anyone tells her otherwise, they are lying.
There is one final instruction.
Do not let her enter the Carter mansion alone.
I stared at the letter.
My father had known.
He had known someone might try to take everything from me.
And he had prepared for it.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why didn't you tell me about the money?””
“Because the account was compromised. Every time I tried to access it, someone intervened. I needed proof that the money was still protected.””
“Was it?””
He nodded.
“Most of it.””
Miller immediately leaned forward.
“Where is the account?””
Daniel showed him the documents.
“The original deposit was made through a trust. But the money was transferred several times after Thomas died.””
Evelyn examined the papers.
“That's impossible. Vanessa claimed the estate had no available funds.””
“She lied,” Daniel said.
I looked at him.
“How much is left?””
He hesitated.
“Four million, six hundred thousand dollars.””
My breath caught.
Four million dollars.
Money that could have paid for my treatment years ago.
Money that had supposedly been spent.
Money Vanessa had hidden while telling me I was a burden.
I began crying.
Not because of the amount.
Because my father had tried to save me.
Even when he was dying, he had been thinking about my future.
Detective Miller took the flash drive into evidence.
Within an hour, investigators had begun examining its contents.
The first files were financial records.
The second contained photographs of company documents.
The third was an audio recording.
Miller played it through his laptop.
A familiar voice filled the room.
Vanessa.
“Thomas, you need to stop making this difficult.””
Then my father's voice.
“I'm not signing anything.””
“You're being unreasonable.””
“I'm protecting my daughter.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Your daughter? You mean that little girl who can't even see properly? What future do you think you're protecting?””
My hands clenched.
My father answered quietly.
“Every future she deserves.””
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
“Michael says you have until midnight.””
“I don't care what Michael says.””
“Richard won't wait forever.””
“Then tell Richard he can go to hell.””
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then another voice entered the recording.
Richard.
“You're making a mistake, Thomas.””
My father replied:
“The mistake was trusting you.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Detective Miller.
“Is that enough to arrest them?””
“It's enough to strengthen several investigations. But we still need to establish what happened during the accident and who directly caused your father's death.””
Evelyn leaned forward.
“There may be more.””
She opened the folder containing my father's documents.
“Thomas had a habit of making duplicate records. He never trusted a single storage location.””
Daniel nodded.
“He told me the same thing.””
Evelyn pointed to the flash drive.
“Look at the final folder.””
Miller opened it.
The folder contained a single video file.
Its name was:
*NIA_FINAL_MESSAGE.*
My heart stopped.
I recognized the date.
It was the day before my father's accident.
I whispered:
“Play it.””
Miller hesitated.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
The screen flickered.
Then my father appeared.
He was sitting in his office, wearing his favorite blue shirt.
His hair was slightly messy.
There was a cup of coffee beside him.
He looked tired.
But he smiled when he saw the camera.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
I covered my mouth.
For the first time in eight years, I heard my father's voice speaking directly to me.
“I'm sorry I haven't been home as much as I should. Daddy has been dealing with some difficult things at work.””
He paused.
Then he smiled.
“But I want you to remember something. You don't have to become a doctor, a lawyer, or a businesswoman to make me proud. You can become whatever makes your heart happy.””
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
“I know you love designing clothes. I've seen the little sketches you leave on the kitchen table. I even found the one with the blue flowers.””
I laughed through my tears.
That was the first dress I had ever designed.
He continued.
“I think you're going to make something beautiful one day.””
His expression became serious.
“There are people around me who believe money makes them powerful. They think they can take whatever they want because they have more of it.””
He leaned closer to the camera.
“Don't let them convince you that your worth depends on what they give you.””
I began sobbing.
Then he said something that made everyone in the room go still.
“If anything happens to me, don't blame yourself. None of this is your fault.””
He looked down briefly.
Then he continued.
“And Nia, there's something else you need to know.””
He took a deep breath.
“Your mother didn't leave because she stopped loving you.””
I turned toward Amara.
She was crying silently.
My father continued.
“She left because Vanessa threatened to have you taken away from her. I asked her to stay away temporarily because I believed I could resolve everything.””
Amara shook her head.
“Thomas…”
On the screen, my father smiled sadly.
“I know you may be angry with her. You have every right to ask questions. But please, sweetheart, don't spend your life believing you weren't loved.””
He paused.
“You were loved every single day.””
The video ended.
I couldn't move.
My mother reached for me.
This time, I didn't pull away.
I collapsed into her arms.
For eight years, I had believed she had abandoned me.
I had spent birthdays wondering whether she remembered me.
I had wondered whether she had another family.
Whether she had forgotten my face.
But she hadn't forgotten.
She had been trying to protect me.
And my father had been trying to protect both of us.
At 2:30 p.m., Detective Miller received confirmation that Richard Hale had been located.
He was attempting to leave the country using a private aircraft registered to a company connected to Michael.
Police intercepted him at a regional airport.
Vanessa was arrested at the Carter mansion.
She didn't resist.
According to the officers, she simply asked whether anyone had found her daughter.
Brianna.
The question made my heart ache.
She was still missing.
But the investigation had finally uncovered a location connected to Richard's activities.
A storage facility outside Macon.
Inside, officers found several boxes containing financial records, personal belongings, and photographs.
They also found a locked room.
Brianna was inside.
Alive.
She had been held there for almost two days.
When the officers opened the door, she immediately began crying.
“Please don't hurt me.””
One officer removed the restraints from her wrists.
“It's okay. You're safe.””
She looked around.
Then whispered:
“Is Nia alive?””
The officer nodded.
“She's safe.””
Brianna began sobbing.
“Can I see her?””
I arrived at the hospital that evening.
Brianna was sitting on the bed with a blanket around her shoulders.
Her makeup was gone.
Her hair was tangled.
For the first time in my life, she looked like an ordinary eighteen-year-old girl instead of someone who believed the world owed her everything.
When she saw me, she started crying.
“Nia.””
I stopped at the doorway.
She looked down.
“I'm sorry.””
I didn't answer immediately.
She wiped her face.
“I know you probably hate me.””
I looked at her bruised wrists.
“Who did this?””
“Richard.””
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because I found the hospital records.””
I sat beside her.
“Tell me what you found.””
Brianna took a shaky breath.
“Mom told me Dad died because of the accident. But I found an old envelope in her office. It had hospital documents inside.””
She looked at me.
“One of them was a statement from a nurse. It said Dad had been stable before someone disconnected his oxygen monitor.””
I closed my eyes.
“Patricia.””
Brianna nodded.
“I confronted Mom. She told me to forget it. But I asked her why she had signed the treatment refusal.””
Her voice broke.
“She slapped me.””
I looked at her.
“She told you?””
“She said Dad had ruined her life. She said he was going to leave everything to you and your mother.””
Brianna began crying harder.
“I told her that wasn't a reason to let him die.””
I sat quietly.
Then she whispered:
“That's when she told me something else.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Brianna stared at the blanket.
“Mom said Richard was supposed to make sure Dad never left that hospital.””
My blood ran cold.
“Did she say how?””
“She said Richard had arranged the accident. But Dad survived, so they had to finish what they started.””
I felt sick.
Brianna continued.
“She told me Michael had helped them. And she said Evelyn had been paid to keep the original trust documents hidden.””
I thought about Evelyn's photograph.
Her fear.
Her confession.
“What did Evelyn do?””
Brianna shook her head.
“I don't know. But I heard Mom arguing with her about the documents several times.””
She reached for my hand.
“Nia, I didn't know they were going to hurt you. I swear.””
I looked at her.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“I was jealous of you.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Dad loved you.””
I stared at her.
“He was your father too.””
Brianna shook her head.
“No. He was your father. He treated me like family, but I always knew I wasn't his daughter.””
Her voice trembled.
“Mom kept telling me that if I had your inheritance, everyone would finally see me as important.””
I remembered her standing in my bedroom, demanding my dress.
“You wanted my dress because you wanted something that belonged to me.””
She nodded.
“I thought if I wore it, everyone would look at me the way they looked at you.””
I looked away.
“That dress took me six months.””
“I know.””
“You knew I needed the competition money for my eyesight.””
Brianna began crying.
“I know.””
“And you still wanted to take it.””
She nodded.
“I was selfish.””
I stood.
“Brianna, I can forgive you for being jealous. But I can't pretend what you did didn't hurt me.””
“I understand.””
“I don't know if we'll ever be close again.””
She lowered her head.
“I understand that too.””
I walked toward the door.
Then I stopped.
“But I'm glad you're alive.””
Brianna covered her face.
And cried.
Three weeks later, the investigation reached its conclusion.
Richard Hale was charged with conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, and involvement in the events surrounding my father's death.
Michael Carter was arrested after investigators uncovered financial transfers and evidence connecting him to the hospital records.
Vanessa faced charges related to fraud, obstruction, and her role in the attempted suppression of medical evidence.
The investigation into my father's death remained a separate criminal matter, but the newly recovered recordings and Patricia's testimony gave prosecutors the evidence they had lacked for eight years.
Evelyn cooperated fully.
She admitted that Vanessa had threatened her family and that she had hidden the original trust documents to prevent them from being destroyed.
She also admitted that she should have come forward sooner.
I didn't immediately forgive her.
But I understood that fear could make people do terrible things.
My mother moved into a small apartment near my specialist's office.
For the first time in years, we had breakfast together.
Sometimes we talked about my father.
Sometimes we talked about nothing important.
And sometimes, we simply sat together.
Brianna began attending counseling.
She also agreed to cooperate with investigators.
We weren't sisters in the way I had once imagined.
But we were no longer enemies.
That was a beginning.
As for my eyesight, the specialist reviewed my condition and developed a treatment plan.
The protected trust provided the money my father had intended for me.
I underwent the first procedure two months later.
The morning after surgery, I sat beside the hospital window while my mother held my hand.
When the doctor removed the protective covering, I blinked.
The world was blurry.
Then gradually, the shapes became clearer.
The sunlight.
The trees.
My mother's face.
I began crying.
“Mom?””
She leaned closer.
“I'm here.””
“I can see you.””
She laughed and cried at the same time.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
I squeezed her hand.
For the first time in years, I could look at someone I loved without struggling to bring their face into focus.
Six months after the Georgia Young Designers Showcase, I returned to the competition.
Not as a contestant.
As a guest designer.
My original blue gown had been recovered from the mansion's storage room.
Vanessa had never managed to wear it.
The skirt still flowed beautifully.
The sapphire crystals still caught the light.
And the tiny blue flowers I had embroidered by hand were still intact.
I stood backstage, holding the gown.
Daniel approached.
“Ready?””
I smiled.
“I think so.””
He looked at the dress.
“Your father would have loved this.””
I looked down at the blue silk.
“I think he already did.””
Before the event began, the organizers invited me to say a few words.
I stepped onto the stage.
Hundreds of people sat in the audience.
I looked toward the front row.
My mother was there.
Brianna was beside her.
Evelyn sat a few seats away.
Detective Miller had also come.
I took a breath.
“My name is Nia Carter. And this dress almost never made it here.””
The audience became quiet.
“I made it during one of the hardest periods of my life. I was afraid of losing my eyesight, afraid of losing my future, and afraid that the people who were supposed to protect me would never let me become who I wanted to be.””
I paused.
“But someone taught me that being loved doesn't mean being protected from every hardship.””
I looked toward my mother.
“It means having someone who believes you deserve a future, even when they can't be there to see it.””
My voice trembled.
“My father believed that.””
I touched the embroidered flowers.
“And every stitch in this dress reminds me that what we create with love can survive the people who try to destroy it.””
The audience stood and applauded.
I smiled through my tears.
Then the lights dimmed.
The gown was carried onto the runway.
And for the first time, I watched something I had created walk into the world without fear.
After the show, I returned to my father's old study.
The room had been cleaned and restored.
His books were back on the shelves.
His photographs stood on the desk.
And beside his favorite chair was a small wooden box that Detective Miller had returned after the investigation.
Inside was a final envelope.
My name was written across it.
I opened it carefully.
There was one short letter.
My sweet Nia,
If you are reading this, I hope you have finally seen the world clearly again.
I wish I could have been there to watch you grow.
I wish I could have walked you into your first competition, held your hand during your treatment, and told you how proud I am of the woman you are becoming.
But I need you to remember something.
You were never the little girl who needed saving.
You were the little girl who kept creating beautiful things even when the world gave her every reason to stop.
Don't let anyone take that away from you.
Not money. Not fear. Not family.
And never let someone convince you that your future belongs to them.
I love you, sweetheart.
Always.
Dad.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
For a long time, I sat in his chair and cried.
Then I wiped my face.
I walked to the sewing machine beside the window.
The same machine I had used to create the dress that started everything.
I placed a fresh piece of blue silk beneath the needle.
And began sewing.
Because my father had been right about one thing.
My story wasn't over.
And this time, nobody was going to decide what I could become.
