Chapter 2: The Stranger Who Knew My Father's Secret

I didn't sleep that night.

The brass key sat on my desk beside my phone, catching the light from the small lamp.

I had read the anonymous messages so many times that I could recite them from memory.

Don't let Vanessa take that dress.

Your father left something inside it.

Don't tell her you found the key.

At 2:13 a.m., I finally replied.

*Who are you?*

The response came almost immediately.

Someone who worked for your father.

*What did he hide?*

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Then:

Meet me tomorrow at 8 a.m. outside Carter & Associates. Come alone.

I frowned.

Carter & Associates was my father's old accounting firm. Vanessa had told me it closed shortly after his death.

I typed another message.

*How do I know you're telling the truth?*

The answer was simple.

Ask Vanessa where your father's second phone went.

I stared at the screen.

I had never known my father owned a second phone.

The following morning, I woke to the sound of someone trying my bedroom handle.

“Nia!””

Vanessa.

I quickly slipped the key into a small fabric pouch and hid it inside my pillowcase.

“Come in.””

The door opened.

Vanessa stood in the hallway wearing a cream-colored silk robe. Her hair was perfectly styled, and a diamond bracelet glittered around her wrist.

She looked at the gown first.

“Is it ready?””

“Almost.””

“Brianna has an appointment at eleven. Her stylist needs time to prepare everything.””

I looked up.

“Why does she need a stylist?””

Vanessa gave me an irritated look.

“Because she will be wearing the dress at tonight's showcase.””

“I thought you said the deadline was six.””

“It is now morning.””

“You said I had until six yesterday.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Don't play games with me.””

I stood beside the sewing table.

“I'm entering that competition.””

She laughed softly.

“Nia, darling, be realistic.””

“I am.””

“You have no connections, no money, and no professional training. You think a few judges are going to hand you fifty thousand dollars because you can sew?””

“I'm registered.””

Vanessa's expression shifted slightly.

“Registered?””

“Yes.””

“Who paid the entry fee?””

“I did.””

She looked at the gown again.

“Interesting.””

Brianna appeared behind her, wearing pink pajamas and holding a cup of iced coffee.

“Is it done?””

“Almost,” Vanessa replied.

Brianna walked into the room and examined the dress.

“Wow. It actually looks better in daylight.””

She touched one of the crystals.

I moved her hand away.

“Stop touching it.””

Brianna rolled her eyes.

“God, you're annoying.””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“I want it delivered to Brianna's room by nine.””

“No.””

This time, Vanessa didn't bother pretending to be patient.

“Then perhaps you should remember that the electricity in this room is paid for by the household.””

She walked over to the wall and switched off the sewing machine's power strip.

The machine went silent.

I stared at her.

“You can't be serious.””

“Try me.””

Brianna smiled.

“Thanks, Mommy.””

They left.

I waited until their footsteps disappeared before reaching for my phone.

The unknown number had sent another message.

Do not bring the dress to the meeting. Bring the key.

I checked the time.

7:21 a.m.

I had thirty-nine minutes.

I changed into jeans and a plain white sweater, tucked the brass key into my pocket, and slipped out through the back entrance.

The Carter mansion had two front doors, a sweeping staircase, and a marble foyer that Vanessa loved showing to guests.

But it also had a narrow service entrance beside the kitchen.

That was the door I had used for years.

Outside, the morning air was cool.

I called a rideshare and headed toward downtown Atlanta.

Carter & Associates occupied a modest office building near Peachtree Street. The sign was still attached to the entrance, although several letters had faded.

At exactly eight o'clock, a black sedan pulled up.

A man in his late fifties stepped out.

He wore a gray suit and carried a leather briefcase.

When he saw me, he stopped.

“Nia Carter?””

I nodded cautiously.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Daniel Brooks. I was your father's financial adviser.””

I recognized the name.

My father had mentioned Daniel several times when I was younger. He had once brought him home for dinner, and I remembered the man giving me a small sketchbook as a birthday present.

“You knew my dad?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“I did. Very well.””

“Then why are you texting me anonymously?””

He glanced toward the street.

“Because I wasn't sure who was monitoring your communications.””

My stomach tightened.

“Monitoring?””

“Let's go inside.””

The office was dusty, but not abandoned. A few filing cabinets stood against the walls, and a large framed photograph of my father hung behind the reception desk.

I stopped in front of it.

He was smiling.

He looked exactly as I remembered him: warm eyes, slightly crooked tie, and the kind of smile that made a room feel safer.

Daniel placed his briefcase on the desk.

“Your father asked me to keep something for you.””

He opened it and removed a thick envelope.

On the front was my name.

My fingers trembled.

“What's this?””

“Documents your father prepared shortly before his death.””

I opened the envelope.

The first page was a letter.

My dearest Nia,

If you are reading this, something happened before I could tell you the truth myself. I am sorry I left you without answers.

I stopped.

My eyes filled with tears.

Daniel waited quietly.

I continued.

There are people who believe money gives them the right to control others. Your stepmother is one of them. I discovered that she had been moving money out of accounts that were supposed to protect your future.

My heart began pounding.

I looked up.

“Vanessa?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father suspected she had been stealing from the estate.””

“How much?””

“Initially, we believed it was a little over two hundred thousand dollars.””

I stared at him.

“That's impossible.””

“Unfortunately, it gets worse.””

He removed several bank statements.

“These transactions were made through accounts connected to your father's company. But the authorization signatures were forged.””

I examined the pages.

The signature looked familiar.

Too familiar.

It was my father's.

Except he had been in the hospital during the dates listed.

“Who signed these?””

“That's what your father was investigating.””

I turned another page.

There were transfers to a company called Vantage Holdings.

The registered director was Vanessa Reed.

My stepmother.

I felt sick.

“Why didn't anyone report her?””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“We were preparing to. But your father died before the investigation could be completed.””

I remembered the night of his death.

The rain.

The phone call.

Vanessa telling me there had been an accident on the highway.

She had said his car lost control.

She had said he died instantly.

I had never questioned it.

Not once.

“Was it really an accident?”” I whispered.

Daniel looked down.

“Your father's car was found on a service road outside Atlanta. The police report stated that he lost control during heavy rain.””

“But?””

Daniel opened a separate folder.

“But the vehicle's brake system had been tampered with.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

“Your father had taken the car to a mechanic two days earlier. The mechanic later gave a statement saying the brake lines were functioning properly. By the time the vehicle was examined after the crash, they had been deliberately damaged.””

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“Are you saying someone killed him?””

“I'm saying the evidence was never properly investigated.””

“Why?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because someone submitted documents showing that your father had been drinking heavily before the accident.””

My father never drank and drove.

He rarely drank at all.

“He wouldn't do that.””

“I know.””

“Then who submitted those documents?””

Daniel slid a photograph across the desk.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a police station two days after my father's death.

Beside her was a man I didn't recognize.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a name.

*Richard Hale.*

“Who is he?””

“Your father's former business partner.””

I shook my head.

“I've never heard that name.””

“That's because your father removed him from the company several months before his death.””

Daniel opened another folder.

“Richard was involved in the financial irregularities. Your father discovered that money was being diverted through shell companies. Vanessa helped him conceal the transactions.””

My fingers went cold.

“Why would she do that?””

“Your father was preparing to divorce her.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“He had discovered that Vanessa was using his signature to access company funds. He planned to end the marriage and remove her from the estate's financial accounts.””

I thought about Vanessa's behavior during those final months.

The late-night arguments.

The locked study.

The phone calls she took in the garden.

I remembered asking why Dad seemed so tired.

She had told me he was stressed about work.

Daniel slid another document toward me.

“This is the important part.””

It was a legal document.

A trust agreement.

My name appeared at the top.

“Your father established a private trust for you,” Daniel explained.

“It included the mansion, several investment accounts, and controlling shares in Carter Textile Group.””

I blinked.

“Carter Textile Group?””

“Your father's company.””

“I thought Vanessa owned everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She has been acting as executor, but she never owned the company. Your father left you the controlling interest.””

I couldn't breathe.

“How much is it worth?””

“Approximately twelve million dollars, depending on the current valuation.””

I stared at him.

Twelve million.

And Vanessa had been telling me I was lucky to have a roof over my head.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“We tried. Your stepmother blocked every attempt to contact you. She told us you had been sent to a private school overseas.””

I stared at him.

“I've been living in that house.””

“I know. I eventually realized something was wrong, but I needed proof.””

He tapped the envelope.

“Your father anticipated that Vanessa might attempt to take control of the company. He created a backup record of the transactions, including copies of the original financial documents.””

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the brass key.

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?””

“It was hidden inside my dress.””

For the first time, he looked genuinely relieved.

“Then he succeeded.””

“What does it open?””

Daniel took the key and examined the engraving.

“A private storage vault beneath the old company headquarters.””

He looked at me.

“Your father left the final evidence there.””

Before I could ask another question, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His face changed.

“Stay here.””

“What's wrong?””

He answered.

“Daniel Brooks speaking.””

A few seconds passed.

Then his voice became sharp.

“Who gave you that information?””

Silence.

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Daniel walked toward the window.

“Someone just accessed the vault.””

My heart dropped.

“Who?””

He looked directly at me.

“Someone using your stepmother's security credentials.””

I grabbed the envelope.

“Then we need to get there.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet. If Vanessa knows the vault exists, she'll be watching every entrance.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Brianna.

It contained a photograph.

My dress was hanging in her bedroom.

Beside it stood Vanessa.

The caption read:

Mommy says the dress is officially mine. Stop being difficult.

I enlarged the photograph.

Something was wrong.

The inner lining near the waist had been torn open.

The brass key had been inside that lining.

But I still had the key.

Which meant someone else had been searching for whatever my father had hidden.

I looked at Daniel.

“There's another reason she wants the dress.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Your father didn't hide the evidence because he thought Vanessa would steal the dress, Nia.””

May you like

He paused.

“He hid it there because he knew she would eventually try to destroy it.””
