Chapter 4: The Lie That Destroyed My Family

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Vanessa was standing less than twenty feet away, holding a photograph of me as a child while speaking about my inheritance as if my existence had been a mistake.

My father's words echoed in my head.

I would never leave you willingly.

I had spent two years believing he had died in an accident. Two years listening to Vanessa describe him as an irresponsible man who had left his family with debts and problems.

Now I was hiding behind a maintenance door, listening to the woman who had raised me discuss how to silence me.

Daniel leaned close to my ear.

“Don't move until I tell you.””

I nodded.

Evelyn held the evidence folder against her chest.

Outside, Richard opened the safe again.

“It's empty,” he said.

Vanessa's heels stopped moving.

“What do you mean, empty?””

“The documents aren't here.””

“Then where are they?””

“I don't know. Maybe Brooks got here first.””

Vanessa let out a furious breath.

“Find him.””

Richard walked toward the shelves.

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

The maintenance room was barely large enough for three people. A single emergency light illuminated a narrow passage leading toward the building's loading area.

Daniel pointed toward the exit.

We moved slowly.

One step.

Then another.

My shoe caught on a loose metal pipe.

It struck the concrete floor.

The sound was small.

But in the silence of the basement, it seemed enormous.

Richard immediately turned.

“Who's there?””

Daniel pushed Evelyn toward the exit.

“Go.””

We ran.

Behind us, Richard shouted.

“Hey!””

A door slammed.

I followed Daniel through the maintenance passage and into a stairwell. Evelyn was already climbing toward the loading entrance.

My phone vibrated again.

Brianna.

Where are you?

I ignored it.

We emerged into an alley behind the building.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I'm calling the police.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not yet. We need to speak with the attorney handling the estate and preserve the evidence first. If Vanessa has someone inside the department, we need to be careful.””

I looked at her.

“Someone inside the police department?””

She hesitated.

“Your father suspected that one of the officers involved in the original accident investigation had a personal connection to Richard Hale.””

I felt sick.

“So even the police report could be fake?””

“Parts of it may have been manipulated,” Evelyn replied.

“We need independent investigators.””

Daniel opened his briefcase and checked the flash drives.

“They're here.””

I looked at the folder.

“What about the original recording?””

“Safe with us,” he said.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Nia, you cannot go back to that house alone.””

I stared at my phone.

The photograph of my destroyed bedroom was still on the screen.

“My dress is there.””

“Nia—”

“My father's key was hidden inside it. Vanessa has been searching for the dress because she knows something is there.””

“We have the key.””

“But she has the dress.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Your safety comes first.””

I wanted to agree.

But the gown represented six months of my life. It represented my father's encouragement, my future, and the treatment I might never afford otherwise.

And Vanessa had already taken enough from me.

“I need to get it back.””

Daniel studied my face.

“Then we're going together.””

We drove to the Carter mansion just after ten.

The gates were open.

That alone made my stomach tighten.

Vanessa usually kept them locked whenever she wasn't expecting visitors.

Daniel parked across the street.

Evelyn remained in the car with the evidence.

“I'll contact the attorney and arrange for a police escort,” she said.

“Don't enter the house unless we confirm it's safe.””

I nodded.

Daniel walked with me toward the front entrance.

Before we reached the steps, the door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

She was wearing a pale blue dress, her hair pulled into a perfect bun.

She looked almost amused.

“Well,” she said.

“Look what the cat dragged in.””

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

“Mr. Brooks. I thought you had retired.””

“Not quite.””

Vanessa stepped aside.

“Come in. We have a great deal to discuss.””

I remained on the doorstep.

“Where's my dress?””

Her smile widened.

“Good morning to you too.””

“Where is it?””

“Brianna is having it altered.””

“Give it back.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Still making demands? You really haven't learned anything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mrs. Reed, I strongly advise you not to interfere with Nia's property.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Her property?””

She reached for a folder on the hallway table.

“Perhaps you should read this.””

She handed me a document.

At the top was the name of Carter Textile Group.

Beneath it was a transfer authorization dated two years earlier.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I stared at it.

“This isn't real.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Your signature looks perfectly real to me.””

“I never agreed to transfer my father's company.””

“You signed the paperwork.””

“You told me it was for the estate.””

“And you signed it.””

Daniel took the document from my hand.

“This authorization has no legal effect without the required independent approval.””

Vanessa's smile faded.

“That's not what the previous attorney told me.””

“Then you should ask him why he failed to explain the trust restrictions.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

Then she turned toward me.

“You've been talking to people who want to steal your inheritance.””

I almost laughed.

“You stole it first.””

Her expression hardened.

“Watch your mouth.””

“No. You watch yours. I know about the money transfers.””

Silence.

Vanessa's eyes flickered toward Daniel.

I continued.

“I know about Vantage Holdings. I know about Richard Hale. And I know Dad was planning to divorce you.””

Her face became completely still.

Then she laughed.

A cold, controlled laugh.

“Your father always did have a talent for making himself look like a victim.””

“He was investigating you.””

“He was paranoid.””

“He knew you were stealing.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Your father was a weak man, Nia. He couldn't manage his business, couldn't manage his marriage, and couldn't even manage to keep himself alive.””

Daniel moved between us.

“That's enough.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You have no authority here.””

“Neither do you, as far as the trust is concerned.””

She turned toward the staircase.

“Brianna!””

A moment later, my stepsister appeared.

She was wearing the sapphire gown.

My gown.

The skirt had been shortened, the train removed, and several embroidered flowers had been cut away.

A large silver brooch covered the empty space near her waist.

I felt something inside me break.

“What did you do?””

Brianna looked down at the dress.

“Relax. It looks better now.””

“You cut the train.””

“It was too long.””

“You destroyed the embroidery!””

“Mommy said I could change it.””

I approached her.

“Take it off.””

Brianna stepped backward.

“Don't touch me!””

“That's my dress.””

Vanessa raised her voice.

“Brianna, go upstairs.””

“But Mommy—”

“Now!””

Brianna reluctantly climbed the stairs.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew how much work went into that dress.””

“And?””

“I made it for the competition.””

“You were never going to win.””

“You don't know that.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Do you really believe a few pieces of fabric are going to save your eyesight?””

I froze.

She knew.

She had always known how much the treatment mattered to me.

“You knew I needed the prize money.””

“Of course I did.””

“And you still took it.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Brianna wanted something special.””

I stared at her.

Then I said something I had never dared say before.

“You're not my mother.””

Her face changed.

The silence was immediate.

Then she slapped me.

My cheek burned.

Daniel grabbed her wrist before she could move again.

“That's enough, Mrs. Reed.””

Vanessa pulled away.

“Get out of my house!””

I touched my cheek.

“My father's house.””

She stepped closer.

“You have no idea what your father really was.””

“Then tell me.””

For a moment, I thought she might.

Instead, she smiled.

“Ask him why he kept you away from his company. Ask him why he never told you about your real mother.””

I went still.

“My mother died when I was born.””

Vanessa's smile became cruel.

“That's what he told you?””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But she continued.

“Your father was very good at telling stories. Especially when the truth would make him look bad.””

My mind raced.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

“Go upstairs, Brianna!””

Then she turned back to me.

“Your father had secrets, Nia. And some of them would have destroyed the beautiful little picture you had of him.””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“We're leaving.””

I resisted.

“Tell me what you mean!””

Vanessa leaned toward me.

“Ask why your birth certificate was changed.””

My blood turned cold.

Daniel pulled me outside.

As we reached the car, Evelyn rolled down the window.

“What happened?””

I couldn't answer.

I was staring at the house.

At the windows where I had spent my childhood watching my father come home from work.

Daniel opened the passenger door.

“Nia, get in.””

I climbed inside.

He handed me a bottle of water.

“Whatever she said, don't assume it's true.””

I swallowed.

“She said my birth certificate was changed.””

Evelyn turned around from the front seat.

Her expression was unreadable.

Then she quietly said:

“Your father asked me to prepare a sealed document concerning your birth.””

I stared at her.

“What document?””

She opened her briefcase.

And removed a yellow envelope.

My name was written across the front.

But this time, the handwriting wasn't my father's.

May you like

It was a woman's.

*For my daughter, Nia.*
