Chapter 10: The Daughter I Chose
The hospital was almost empty when we arrived.
Detective Harris had arranged for officers to escort us directly to a private consultation room.
My mother was sitting beside the window.
Her hands were folded in her lap.
Her hair was disheveled.
She looked twenty years older than the woman I had last seen.
When she saw me, she stood.
"Marcus.""
I didn't move.
"Tell me the truth.""
She looked at Lily and Emily.
Then she began crying.
"Are they safe?""
"Yes.""
"Both of them?""
"Yes.""
She closed her eyes.
"Thank God.""
I placed the photograph on the table.
The one showing the two newborn babies.
"Mom, you said the second baby was yours.""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Explain.""
She sat down slowly.
"Thirty-five years ago, when Claire gave birth to you, there were complications. She had been carrying twins.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Twins?""
"Yes. A boy and a girl.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because the little girl disappeared.""
I frowned.
"What?""
My mother wiped her face.
"One of the babies was taken from the hospital during the confusion after Claire died.""
I stared.
"Who took her?""
"Robert.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Why?""
"Because he wanted to protect his inheritance.""
She continued.
"Robert believed his twin brother Michael was trying to steal the company. He thought the little girl would become a bargaining chip.""
I looked at Detective Harris.
He was listening carefully.
My mother continued.
"He gave the baby to me. He told me to raise her as my own.""
I shook my head.
"Who was the baby?""
My mother looked at Emily.
Then at Lily.
Then back at me.
"Vanessa.""
I felt the room tilt.
"No.""
She nodded.
"Vanessa was Claire's daughter. Your twin sister.""
I stared at the photograph.
Vanessa.
My sister.
The woman who had nearly married me.
The woman who had imprisoned Elena.
The woman who had kidnapped my daughter.
And now I understood why my mother had been so afraid.
"Then why did you tell everyone she was Michael's daughter?""
"Because Michael believed it too.""
I closed my eyes.
My mother continued.
"He found out years later that Vanessa was adopted. He wanted to use her to take control of the company. He told her she was his biological child because he knew she would do anything to earn his approval.""
I looked up.
"Was she?""
"No.""
"Did she know?""
My mother nodded.
"She found out when she was eighteen.""
I felt sick.
"Why didn't anyone stop her?""
My mother began crying harder.
"Because by then, she had already learned how to manipulate people.""
I turned toward Detective Harris.
"Where is Michael?""
He checked his phone.
"We're still searching. He escaped the construction yard.""
My mother suddenly grabbed my hand.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
I pulled away.
"There's always something else.""
She lowered her eyes.
"I helped him.""
"Helped who?""
"Michael.""
I stared at her.
"With what?""
"The fake death. The company records. The money.""
I stood.
"You helped him kill Robert?""
She shook her head frantically.
"No! I didn't know he was going to kill him!""
"Then what did you do?""
"I signed the documents. I helped change the identity records. I helped him disappear.""
I felt anger rising.
"You let me bury a stranger!""
She covered her face.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"You let me cry at his grave!""
"I know.""
"You watched me grow up believing the man who raised me was my father!""
"I know!""
Her voice broke.
"I know, Marcus!""
The room went silent.
Then she reached into her handbag.
She removed a small envelope.
"I kept this for you.""
I didn't take it.
"What is it?""
"Claire's final letter.""
I looked at the envelope.
My biological mother's handwriting appeared across the front.
*For my son, Marcus.*
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
The paper was yellowed.
The ink had faded.
I read slowly.
My beautiful boy,
If you're reading this, then someone has finally told you the truth.
I wanted to hold you longer. I wanted to watch you grow. I wanted to hear you laugh and see what kind of man you would become.
But I was sick, and I knew I wouldn't survive.
I asked Margaret to protect you.
I asked her to keep you away from the men who wanted to use you.
There is one thing I need you to remember.
You were never born to inherit a company.
You were born because I loved you.
And if you ever have children of your own, give them the one thing I couldn't give you.
A home where nobody has to be afraid.
I lowered the letter.
For the first time that night, I cried.
Not because I had lost something.
Because I finally understood that someone had loved me before I even knew her name.
My mother reached toward me.
I stepped away.
"I need time.""
She nodded.
"I understand.""
Then she looked at Emily.
"Can I say hello?""
Emily moved closer to me.
I crouched.
"It's okay, sweetheart.""
She approached my mother slowly.
My mother began crying again.
"Hello, little one.""
Emily looked at her.
"Are you Grandma?""
My mother nodded.
"Yes.""
Emily considered that.
Then asked:
"Did you know where my mommy was?""
My mother covered her mouth.
"Yes.""
Emily looked down.
"Why didn't you bring her home?""
My mother had no answer.
And neither did I.
At 1:20 a.m., Detective Harris received a call.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
"Where?""
A pause.
"Send the units.""
He ended the call.
I stood.
"What happened?""
"We found Michael.""
"Where?""
"Your property.""
My stomach tightened.
"The house?""
"Yes. He's inside.""
I looked at the girls.
"Are they safe?""
"Officers are protecting the house. He doesn't know we've found him.""
I turned to my mother.
"Stay with the girls.""
She nodded.
Then I followed Harris outside.
The swimming pool was dark when we arrived.
The circular hatch had been sealed with a temporary metal cover.
Yellow police tape stretched across the patio.
I looked toward the house.
A light was burning in my office.
"He's inside.""
Harris nodded.
"Two officers are already in position.""
We entered through the kitchen.
The house smelled of wet stone and old wood.
My engagement ring box was still on the patio table.
The diamond ring remained inside.
I picked it up.
For a moment, I thought about the afternoon when I had planned to propose to Vanessa.
I remembered her happy tears.
Her smile.
The way she had pressed her hand against her mouth.
I had believed I was beginning a new life.
Instead, I had been standing above the prison where my wife was being held.
I closed the ring box.
Then I heard a voice.
"Marcus.""
I turned.
Michael stood in my office.
He was holding an old photograph.
The photograph of Robert.
"Come in.""
I looked at Harris.
He signaled for me to remain behind him.
Michael laughed.
"Still hiding behind other people?""
"Where's Vanessa?""
"She's gone.""
"Where?""
"Somewhere you'll never find her.""
I stepped forward.
"She's under arrest.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"She's my daughter.""
"She's my sister.""
He looked at me.
Then smiled.
"Now you understand.""
He placed the photograph on the desk.
"You and Vanessa were born together. Robert wanted both of you. Claire wanted both of you. But your mother chose you.""
I said nothing.
Michael continued.
"She gave you a family. She gave you a home. She gave you everything.""
"And you destroyed it.""
He shook his head.
"I built it.""
"You imprisoned Elena.""
"She knew too much.""
"You threatened Lily.""
"She was useful.""
I lunged forward.
Harris caught my arm.
Michael laughed.
"Go ahead. Hit me. It won't change anything.""
I looked at him.
"Why did you kill Robert?""
His smile disappeared.
For the first time, I saw genuine anger.
"Because he was going to give everything away.""
"To children?""
"To people who didn't deserve it.""
I stared at him.
"You're talking about your own family.""
"Family is a weakness.""
He reached into his pocket.
Harris raised his weapon.
"Don't move!""
Michael froze.
Then slowly removed a small silver object.
A USB drive.
He placed it on the desk.
"Everything is here.""
I looked at it.
"What?""
"The original recordings. The bank transfers. The hospital documents. The real death certificates.""
I approached.
"Why give them to me?""
Michael looked toward the swimming pool.
"Because I want you to understand something.""
He stepped closer.
"Robert didn't die because of the inheritance.""
I stared.
"Then why?""
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"Because he was going to tell you who your biological father really was.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"You're lying.""
Michael smiled.
"Ask Margaret.""
I looked at him.
"She told me everything.""
He shook his head.
"No. She told you what Claire wanted her to believe.""
He pointed toward the USB drive.
"Play the final recording.""
Detective Harris took the device.
An officer connected it to the office computer.
A video appeared.
Robert Hayes sat behind a desk.
He looked exhausted.
There was a bruise near his temple.
He leaned toward the camera.
"Marcus, if you're watching this, then I failed.""
I stopped breathing.
Robert continued.
"Your mother has told you that Claire was your biological mother. That isn't entirely true.""
I looked at the screen.
He swallowed.
"Claire gave birth to you, but she wasn't the woman who conceived you.""
My heart pounded.
"Your biological mother was Margaret.""
I turned toward the hallway.
My mother stood in the doorway.
Her face was white.
Robert continued.
"Margaret was my wife. She carried you. Claire was the woman who delivered you because the hospital records were altered after a medical emergency.""
I felt the room spinning.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had claimed to be my mother.
The woman who had spent thirty-five years hiding the truth.
She had been my biological mother all along.
The recording continued.
"And Vanessa was born from Claire. She was never Michael's child. She was never Margaret's child. She was Claire's daughter.""
I looked at Michael.
He was smiling.
Robert leaned closer to the camera.
"Marcus, there is one final truth you need to know.""
The image flickered.
"Your wife Elena is not your sister.""
I closed my eyes.
Robert continued.
"The DNA records were deliberately altered to make you believe that. Michael wanted you to abandon Elena. He wanted you to believe your marriage was illegal. He wanted to destroy your family before you discovered the truth.""
I looked at Harris.
Then back at the screen.
Robert's voice became weaker.
"Elena's father was not my biological father. I raised her, but she was adopted. She has no blood relationship to you.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Elena.
My wife.
My daughter's mother.
The woman I had loved from the beginning.
We weren't siblings.
We had never been siblings.
Michael had invented the entire story.
Robert continued.
"Marcus, I tried to protect you. But I made terrible decisions. I allowed Michael to take my identity.
I allowed Margaret to hide the truth. And I allowed Vanessa to grow up believing she was unwanted.""
He paused.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
"Don't repeat my mistakes.""
The recording ended.
Silence filled the room.
I turned toward Michael.
He wasn't smiling anymore.
Harris stepped forward.
"Michael Hayes, you're under arrest for kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, and the suspected murder of Robert Hayes.""
Michael suddenly lunged toward the desk.
He grabbed the USB drive and threw it against the wall.
The officers tackled him.
He fought violently, but they forced his hands behind his back.
As they pulled him toward the door, he looked at me.
"You think you've won?""
I stared at him.
"Yes.""
He laughed.
"Then ask Vanessa why she took the second baby.""
The officers dragged him away.
I stood alone in the office.
For a long moment, I couldn't move.
Then my phone rang.
Elena.
I answered.
"Marcus?""
"I'm here.""
She was crying.
"Are you coming home?""
I looked toward the swimming pool.
The dark water reflected the lights of the house.
Then I looked at the engagement ring box.
"Yes.""
"Are the girls safe?""
"Both of them.""
A quiet sob escaped her.
"Thank God.""
I closed my eyes.
"Elena?""
"Yes?""
"I know the truth.""
She went silent.
"About us?""
"Yes.""
She began crying harder.
I whispered:
"We're going to be okay.""
Three months later, the house was different.
The circular hatch beneath the swimming pool had been permanently sealed.
The hidden chamber had been dismantled.
The old service building had been searched, and investigators had recovered enough evidence to reopen the cases surrounding Robert's death, the financial fraud, and Elena's kidnapping.
Michael was awaiting trial.
Vanessa had been charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, and attempted murder.
The investigation into the hospital records was still ongoing.
My mother had agreed to testify.
I hadn't forgiven her.
Not yet.
But I had begun answering her calls.
And that was a start.
Elena had recovered slowly.
Some nights, she still woke up screaming.
Some mornings, she stood beside the swimming pool and stared at the water for a long time.
I never asked her to forget.
I simply stood beside her.
Lily and Emily were living with us.
We had explained that they were twins.
We had explained that people had made terrible choices before they were old enough to understand.
But we had never told them they needed to choose between families.
One afternoon, I found the girls sitting together in the garden.
They were arranging their stuffed animals in a row.
Lily looked up.
"Daddy?""
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Can Emily stay forever?""
I crouched beside them.
"Would you like that?""
Both girls nodded.
I smiled.
"Then she stays.""
Emily threw her arms around my neck.
"Does that mean you're my daddy?""
I kissed her forehead.
"If you want me to be.""
She smiled.
"Then you're my daddy.""
Lily hugged us both.
From the kitchen doorway, Elena watched.
She was holding a cup of coffee.
For the first time in months, she looked peaceful.
That evening, after the girls had gone to bed, Elena found me standing on the patio.
The red velvet ring box was in my hand.
She stopped.
"Marcus?""
I turned.
She looked at the box.
Then at me.
"What's that?""
I opened it.
The diamond ring still rested inside.
The same ring I had intended to give Vanessa.
Elena stared at it.
I slowly removed it.
Then I placed it back inside the box.
"I bought this when I thought I was ready to start a new life.""
She looked down.
"I know.""
"But I don't want a new life.""
I took her hand.
"I want the one we were supposed to have.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
I reached into my pocket.
There was another ring.
A simple gold band.
Nothing extravagant.
Nothing designed to impress anyone.
Just a ring I had bought that morning.
I held it between my fingers.
"Elena, I know we've already been married for seven years. I know we've been through more than most people could survive.""
She smiled through her tears.
"But I want to ask you again.""
I lowered myself onto one knee.
"Will you choose me again?""
Elena covered her mouth.
Then she nodded.
"Yes.""
I slipped the ring onto her finger.
She pulled me into her arms.
And for the first time in fourteen months, I felt like I was finally home.
The following morning, Lily came running into our bedroom.
"Daddy!""
I sat up.
"What's wrong?""
She was holding a small white envelope.
"Grandma sent this.""
I took it.
My mother's handwriting appeared on the front.
*For Marcus. Only open when you're ready.*
I opened it.
Inside was one final document.
A DNA report.
This one had been completed independently by the police laboratory.
It confirmed the identities of all four children involved in the hospital investigation.
Marcus Hayes.
Vanessa Morgan.
Lily Hayes.
Emily Hayes.
I read the results carefully.
Everything matched what Robert's recording had revealed.
Then I noticed a handwritten note at the bottom.
It was from my mother.
Marcus, I know you may never forgive me. But there is one thing I need you to know.
When Claire died, I promised her I would protect both of her children.
I failed Vanessa.
But I never stopped loving you.
I folded the letter.
Elena placed her hand over mine.
"Are you okay?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
She looked toward the doorway.
The girls were arguing about who got to choose breakfast.
Lily wanted pancakes.
Emily wanted waffles.
Their laughter filled the hallway.
I smiled.
Then I looked at Elena.
"Do you know what the strangest part is?""
"What?""
"Fourteen months ago, I thought my life was over.""
She squeezed my hand.
"And now?""
I looked toward the girls.
"Now I know it was only the beginning.""
Elena rested her head against my shoulder.
Outside, sunlight spread across the garden.
The swimming pool shimmered quietly.
But I never looked at the bottom again.
I didn't need to.
The truth had finally come to the surface.
And the little girl who had screamed that her mother was beneath the water had given me something far more valuable than an explanation.
She had given me my family back.
Not the family I had inherited.
Not the family someone had arranged for me.
May you like
The family I chose.
And this time, nobody was going to take them away.
