Chapter 1: The Hand Beneath the Water
The hand reached toward me again.
I grabbed it.
The fingers closed around mine with surprising strength, and something inside the darkness shifted.
I pulled.
A woman's face appeared beneath the circular hatch.
Her hair floated around her head in tangled black strands. Her skin was frighteningly pale. Her eyes were open, wide with terror, and fixed directly on me.
For one impossible second, I forgot that I was underwater.
I forgot that my lungs were burning.
I forgot that the woman I was staring at had been buried fourteen months earlier.
Elena.
My wife.
I tried to scream her name, but a stream of bubbles escaped my mouth.
She reached for me with both hands.
I pulled harder.
The metal hatch shifted another few inches, scraping against its frame. A narrow opening appeared, barely wide enough for her shoulders.
Then I noticed the chain.
A thick steel chain was wrapped around her left wrist.
My blood ran cold.
Someone had chained my wife beneath our swimming pool.
I grabbed the chain and pulled, but it was secured to a metal bracket inside the hidden chamber.
Elena shook her head frantically.
Her lips moved.
I couldn't hear anything.
But I understood one word.
Go.
She was telling me to leave.
I refused.
I braced my feet against the pool tiles and reached deeper into the opening.
My fingers found a small metal latch attached to the chain.
I pulled it.
Nothing.
My lungs felt ready to explode.
Then Elena did something that made my heart break.
She pressed her palm against the side of my face.
Exactly the way she used to touch me when I woke from nightmares.
I looked into her eyes.
There was no mistaking her.
The tiny scar above her left eyebrow.
The faint birthmark near her jaw.
The little crescent-shaped mark on her wrist from a kitchen accident years earlier.
It was Elena.
My Elena.
And she was alive.
I pulled again.
The latch finally released.
The chain dropped into the darkness.
I wrapped one arm around her waist and pushed upward with my legs.
We broke through the surface together.
I dragged her toward the pool steps, coughing and gasping.
"ELENA!""
Her body collapsed against mine.
I grabbed the edge of the pool and hauled her onto the white stone.
She coughed violently.
Water poured from her mouth.
I rolled her onto her side and shouted her name again.
"Elena! Open your eyes!""
Her eyelids fluttered.
Then she whispered something.
"Marcus?""
My knees nearly gave out.
I pressed my forehead against hers.
"Yes. Yes, sweetheart. It's me.""
She started crying.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just silent, exhausted tears slipping down her cheeks.
I touched her face with both hands.
"You're alive.""
Her lips trembled.
"Where's Lily?""
I turned.
Our daughter was standing several feet away, clutching Vanessa's dress.
The moment Lily saw Elena, she let go.
"Mommy!""
She ran.
Elena tried to lift her arms but barely had the strength.
Lily dropped to her knees beside her mother.
"Mommy! I told Daddy! I told him you were here!""
Elena wrapped one trembling arm around her.
"Oh, my baby.""
Lily buried her face against Elena's wet shoulder.
"I missed you.""
Elena closed her eyes.
"I missed you too.""
I couldn't breathe.
Fourteen months.
Fourteen months of mourning a woman who had been alive beneath our own home.
I looked at Vanessa.
She hadn't moved.
She stood beside the pool with one hand covering her mouth.
Her other hand was gripping the strap of her designer handbag so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
"Call 911," I ordered.
Vanessa blinked.
"What?""
"Call an ambulance!""
She reached for her phone.
But Elena suddenly grabbed my wrist.
Her fingernails dug into my skin.
"No.""
I looked down.
"What?""
Elena's eyes darted toward Vanessa.
"Not her.""
The words were barely audible.
I stared at my wife.
"Elena, you're confused. You've been trapped down there. We need medical help.""
She shook her head.
"Marcus. Please.""
Her fingers tightened around mine.
"Don't let her call anyone.""
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was still holding her phone.
"Vanessa?""
She immediately lowered it.
"Marcus, this is ridiculous. She's been underwater. She needs a hospital.""
Elena flinched at the sound of her voice.
That tiny reaction told me more than a thousand explanations could have.
I slowly stood.
"Why is my wife afraid of you?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a moment, she looked almost offended.
"Your wife?""
She pointed toward Elena.
"Marcus, listen to yourself. You are in shock.""
"Answer the question.""
"She's been declared dead.""
"She's lying on my patio!""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She's manipulating you.""
Lily looked up from her mother's chest.
"Stop being mean to Mommy!""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Lily, come here.""
The little girl pulled herself closer to Elena.
"No.""
"Sweetheart, come here right now.""
"I want Mommy.""
Vanessa took one step forward.
Elena screamed.
It was a weak, broken sound, but it stopped everyone.
"Don't touch my daughter!""
Vanessa froze.
I moved between them.
"Don't come any closer.""
"Marcus, you're making a terrible mistake.""
I glanced at the engagement ring box lying on the patio.
The red velvet lid was still slightly open.
The diamond inside caught the afternoon sunlight.
A few minutes earlier, I had been preparing to ask Vanessa to marry me.
Now my wife was alive.
My daughter was crying against her.
And the woman I had trusted with our family was standing over them, looking like she had just watched a carefully constructed plan collapse.
I pulled out my phone.
I called emergency services myself.
"There's been an accident," I said.
"A woman has been trapped inside a concealed chamber beneath my swimming pool. She's alive, but severely weakened. We need an ambulance and police officers.""
I gave them the address.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Marcus, you need to stop.""
I covered the phone.
"Go inside.""
"Excuse me?""
"Get away from my wife.""
She stared at me.
Then she laughed.
A short, disbelieving laugh.
"After everything I've done for you?""
I looked at her.
"What have you done, Vanessa?""
Her eyes narrowed.
"I helped you survive losing Elena.""
"You helped me bury her.""
The sentence seemed to hit her.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
I returned to the phone.
The dispatcher was asking questions.
I answered as carefully as I could.
When I finished, I crouched beside Elena.
Her breathing was shallow.
Her clothes were soaked, and her body was shaking uncontrollably.
I removed my dress shirt and wrapped it around her shoulders.
"Stay with me," I whispered.
She looked at me.
"Marcus...""
"I'm here.""
"Listen carefully.""
I brushed wet hair away from her forehead.
"Whatever happened, we'll figure it out. You're safe now.""
She shook her head.
"No. You don't understand.""
"What?""
Her eyes moved toward the house.
Then toward Vanessa.
"She knows.""
I felt a chill.
"Knows what?""
Elena swallowed.
"That I got out.""
I looked toward the pool.
The circular hatch was still open.
The dark chamber beneath it looked like a doorway into another world.
"How long were you down there?"" I asked.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
"Days? Weeks?""
She looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
"Fourteen months.""
My stomach turned.
"Fourteen months?""
She nodded.
"Marcus, they didn't just lock me down there.""
Her voice cracked.
"They told everyone I was dead.""
I felt the patio tilt beneath my feet.
"Who?""
Elena opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Vanessa spoke behind me.
"She's lying.""
I turned sharply.
Vanessa was standing near the glass doors leading into the kitchen.
Her phone was pressed against her ear.
She was no longer crying.
She was no longer pretending to be shocked.
She was speaking in a low voice.
"Yes," she whispered.
"We have a problem.""
Then she looked directly at me.
May you like
And said the one thing I would never forget.
"He's found her.""
