Chapter 9: The Baby They Switched at Birth

I looked at the photograph for nearly a minute.

Elena's mother stood beside a hospital bed.

Robert Hayes stood on the other side.

Between them was a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

The date matched Lily's birth.

I turned the photograph over again.

Vanessa's handwriting was unmistakable.

You've been raising the wrong child.

I wanted to tear it apart.

But something stopped me.

The baby in the photograph had a small crescent-shaped birthmark on the left shoulder.

Lily had the same mark.

I looked at Elena through the hospital video call.

"Tell me what happened that day.""

She was crying.

"I don't know everything.""

"Then tell me what you know.""

Elena took a shaky breath.

"When I gave birth to Lily, Robert arranged for a private genetic examination. He told me it was routine.""

I frowned.

"Why would he do that?""

"He said there was a hereditary condition in the family. He wanted to make sure Lily was healthy.""

"And?""

"The results came back showing that Lily wasn't genetically related to me.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"That makes no sense.""

"I know.""

"Did you tell the doctors?""

"Yes. They repeated the tests.""

"And?""

"Same result.""

I stared at her.

"Then what happened?""

Elena looked down.

"Robert told me the hospital had made a mistake. He said the records had been mixed up.""

I felt anger rising.

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to.""

Her voice cracked.

"I had just given birth. I was exhausted. I was frightened. And Robert was the most powerful man in the room.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you ever find out whose baby Lily was?""

"No.""

"Then how can you be certain she's ours?""

Elena looked at me.

"Because I remember holding her. I remember the first time she opened her eyes. I remember the tiny scar on her shoulder.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Whatever those papers say, I raised her. I loved her. She's my daughter.""

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting beside me, playing with the rabbit's torn ear.

"She's my daughter too," I said.

Elena nodded.

"I know.""

I lowered my voice.

"But I need the truth.""

"Then go to Room 14.""

The old hospital had been converted into a medical records center.

Room 14 was located in the basement.

A narrow corridor led to a steel door with a small glass window.

Detective Harris accompanied me.

Two uniformed officers remained near the stairs.

I inserted the silver key.

The lock turned.

Inside was a small archive room.

Metal cabinets lined the walls.

A desk stood beneath a flickering fluorescent light.

And on the desk sat a wooden box.

My name was written across it.

I approached.

The box was locked.

I tried the second key.

It opened immediately.

Inside were three folders.

One belonged to Robert Hayes.

One belonged to Claire Morgan.

The third belonged to Elena's mother.

I opened the first folder.

A hospital report.

A genetic examination.

A handwritten letter.

I recognized Robert's signature.

*Marcus is my biological son. I have confirmed this through independent testing. If anything happens to me, Michael must never be allowed to alter his identity again.*

I felt my chest tighten.

The next page contained a second report.

This one was dated the day Lily was born.

I read the first line.

Then read it again.

The report confirmed that Elena was Lily's biological mother.

But the father's identity was listed as unknown.

I looked at Detective Harris.

"Someone altered the other report.""

He nodded.

"That appears likely.""

I opened the final folder.

Inside was a photograph of two newborn babies.

Both wore identical hospital bracelets.

One was labeled:

*BABY GIRL — HAYES.*

The other:

*BABY GIRL — MORGAN.*

I stared.

Two babies.

Two families.

A handwritten note was attached.

*THE ORIGINAL TRANSFER RECORD.*

I unfolded it.

The hospital had recorded a temporary transfer of both newborns to an adjacent neonatal unit.

One baby had been moved for observation.

The other had been placed in the wrong cot.

The transfer was supposed to last less than twenty minutes.

But someone had changed the identification bracelets.

My hands began shaking.

I looked at the signature.

The person responsible for verifying the transfer was:

*MRS. MARGARET HAYES.*

My mother.

I felt the room tilt.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

"Mr. Hayes?""

I couldn't answer.

I read the next page.

The original birth records identified two mothers.

Claire Morgan.

And Robert's first wife.

Elena's mother.

The babies had been switched deliberately.

One was raised by my mother.

The other was raised by Elena's family.

But the document didn't explain why.

I turned the page.

A letter was attached.

It was written by my mother.

I unfolded it.

"Marcus,

If you are reading this, then Michael has failed to keep the truth buried.

I need you to understand that I didn't switch the babies for money.

I did it because Claire was dying.

She had asked me to protect her child.

Robert wanted to take you away and use you as leverage in his battle with Michael.

I believed I could save you by giving you a different identity.

I never expected you to fall in love with Elena.

And I never expected...""

The letter ended abruptly.

I turned it over.

There was another sentence written on the back.

*THE BABY I GAVE ELENA WAS NOT THE BABY I TOOK FROM CLAIRE.*

I stared at the words.

My head began pounding.

"What does that mean?""

Detective Harris examined the document.

"It means there may have been a second exchange.""

I looked at the photographs.

Two babies.

Two mothers.

Two identities.

And a third name written in the margin.

*VANESSA MORGAN.*

I froze.

"Who is that?""

Harris looked at me.

"Possibly the woman we've been looking for.""

I shook my head.

"No. Vanessa is Michael's daughter.""

"Maybe.""

I looked at the records again.

The second baby had been born to Claire.

The first baby had been born to Robert's wife.

But the original transfer records had been altered.

There was no reliable way to tell which child had gone home with which family.

I picked up the last document.

A DNA laboratory report.

Three names appeared.

Robert Hayes.

Claire Morgan.

Vanessa Morgan.

The results were marked confidential.

I read them.

Then my hands went numb.

Vanessa was not Michael's biological daughter.

She was Robert's.

Just like me.

But there was another line.

A second parent.

*BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: CLAIRE MORGAN.*

I stared.

Vanessa was my biological sister.

The woman who had nearly married me.

The woman who had tried to take my wife.

The woman who had kidnapped my daughter.

My sister.

I stepped backward.

"No.""

Detective Harris took the report.

He read it twice.

Then looked at me.

"We need to find her immediately.""

I could barely breathe.

My phone rang.

Elena.

I answered.

"Marcus?""

I couldn't speak.

She heard something in my silence.

"What did you find?""

I looked at the DNA report.

"Vanessa is Claire's daughter.""

Elena closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

"You knew?""

"I suspected.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

She whispered:

"Because Vanessa isn't the only child who was switched.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Who else?""

Elena looked directly at me.

Then she said:

"Your daughter.""

I drove back to the hospital with Detective Harris.

My mind kept returning to the two newborn photographs.

Two babies.

Two bracelets.

A switched identity.

And now Elena was telling me Lily was involved.

When I entered her room, she was sitting upright.

She looked at me.

"Did you find the report?""

I placed it on her bedside table.

"Vanessa is Claire's daughter.""

Elena nodded.

"And what else?""

I stared at her.

"Tell me what happened to Lily.""

Elena took a slow breath.

"Robert told me that the original hospital records had been destroyed.""

"But they weren't.""

"No.""

"Who changed them?""

She looked away.

"Your mother.""

I clenched my jaw.

"Why?""

"Because Lily wasn't supposed to be born into this family.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Elena's eyes filled.

"When I was pregnant, Robert discovered that Michael and Vanessa were planning to use the baby to claim the inheritance.""

I stared.

"How?""

"Michael believed Lily would be the perfect legal heir. He thought he could control her through Vanessa.""

I felt sick.

"So they wanted my daughter?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because Robert had changed his will.""

She looked at me.

"He left everything to Lily.""

I froze.

"What?""

Elena nodded.

"Your father-in-law wanted his granddaughter to inherit the estate. He believed she would be safer than any adult in the family.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"But if Vanessa is his daughter...""

"She wasn't supposed to know.""

Elena looked toward the window.

"Robert had a secret arrangement with Claire. He promised that her children would be protected.""

I stared.

"Her children?""

"Yes.""

"How many?""

Elena swallowed.

"Two.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Me and Vanessa.""

She nodded.

"Both of you.""

I looked down at the documents.

Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.

"Where does Lily fit into this?""

Elena reached beneath her pillow.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

A hospital bracelet.

Tiny.

Pink.

The name printed on it was:

*BABY GIRL MORGAN.*

I stared.

"That's Lily's?""

Elena shook her head.

"No.""

She held my gaze.

"That's the bracelet they removed from Lily.""

My heart began pounding.

"Then whose bracelet did they put on her?""

Elena closed her eyes.

"Vanessa's.""

I stepped backward.

"What?""

"Vanessa gave birth to a daughter the same night you and I had Lily.""

I stared at her.

"You're saying Lily isn't...""

Elena shook her head.

"No. Lily is our biological daughter. Vanessa's child was placed with another family.""

I felt dizzy.

"Where?""

Elena's voice dropped.

"Your mother took her.""

I gripped the edge of the bed.

"Where did she take her?""

Elena looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

"She raised her.""

I stared.

"Who?""

Elena began crying.

"Your mother.""

I couldn't move.

My mother had raised me.

And apparently, she had also raised Vanessa's biological daughter.

But I didn't know who that child was.

Then Elena said the words that changed everything.

"Marcus, the little girl your mother brought to the hospital today wasn't Lily.""

My blood turned to ice.

I looked at the empty chair.

The stuffed rabbit.

The pink blanket.

The child I had carried out of the service building.

A cold realization crept through my mind.

The girl I had rescued wasn't my daughter.

She was Vanessa's.

And somewhere, my real Lily was still missing.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A little girl's voice came through.

"Daddy?""

I stopped breathing.

It was Lily.

My real Lily.

"Baby! Where are you?""

She was crying.

"Mommy says we're going home.""

"Where are you?""

A man's voice interrupted.

"Hello, Marcus.""

Michael.

"Do you want your daughter back?""

I gripped the phone.

"Yes.""

"Then come alone.""

"Put her on.""

"Not yet.""

"LET ME TALK TO MY DAUGHTER!""

A small voice returned.

"Daddy?""

I closed my eyes.

"I'm here, sweetheart.""

She whispered:

"Daddy, there's another little girl here.""

My heart stopped.

"Who?""

Lily began crying harder.

"She looks just like me.""

The call disconnected.

A second later, a photograph arrived.

Two little girls were sitting side by side.

Identical pink dresses.

Identical curly hair.

Identical pink bows.

May you like

And on the back of the photograph was a message.

*ONE IS YOUR DAUGHTER. THE OTHER IS THE GIRL WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR DAUGHTER. YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO CHOOSE.*
