Chapter 6: The Secret Behind My Father's Face
I ran.
I didn't think.
I didn't wait for Detective Harris to finish speaking.
I ran down the hospital corridor toward the family room.
"Lily!""
A nurse jumped out of her chair.
"Sir?""
"Where is my daughter?""
The nurse pointed toward the small room.
"She's sleeping. What happened?""
I pushed through the door.
Lily was curled beneath a pink blanket.
Her stuffed rabbit rested against her cheek.
I checked the window.
Locked.
The adjoining bathroom.
Empty.
The closet.
Empty.
Then I noticed the small white envelope on the bedside table.
My name was written across it.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Lily was standing beside the swimming pool.
Vanessa was behind her.
The picture had been taken three weeks earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
*SHE KNOWS MORE THAN YOU THINK.*
I turned toward the nurse.
"Has anyone been in here?""
She looked confused.
"Only me and the security guard.""
"Where is the guard?""
She pointed toward the hallway.
I stepped outside.
A man in a hospital security uniform stood near the elevators.
He was holding a paper cup.
I approached him.
"Excuse me.""
He looked up.
"Yes, sir?""
"Did you leave this envelope in the family room?""
His eyes moved toward the photograph in my hand.
For a split second, his expression changed.
Then he dropped the cup.
Coffee spilled across the floor.
He ran.
I shouted.
"STOP!""
He sprinted toward the stairwell.
Detective Harris came around the corner and intercepted him.
The man fought.
A second officer grabbed his arm.
Within seconds, he was on the floor.
I stared at him.
He wasn't a hospital employee.
His identification badge was fake.
Detective Harris pulled a small device from his pocket.
A key card.
And a photograph of Elena.
"Who sent you?"" Harris demanded.
The man remained silent.
Then he looked at me.
"You should have stayed at the funeral, Mr. Hayes.""
I felt my hands clench.
"Who are you?""
He smiled.
"Ask your mother.""
The officers dragged him away.
I returned to Lily.
She had woken up.
"Daddy?""
I sat beside her.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
She looked at the photograph in my hand.
Then her face changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Someone left it here.""
Lily looked frightened.
I brushed her curls away from her forehead.
"Do you know who took it?""
She nodded.
"Vanessa.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She took pictures of me near the pool.""
"When?""
"Before she went away.""
I swallowed.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Lily looked down.
"She told me it was a secret.""
I held her gently.
"Baby, you can tell Daddy anything.""
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Vanessa said Mommy wasn't supposed to come back.""
My chest tightened.
"What else did she say?""
Lily looked toward the door.
"She said if Mommy came back, someone would take me away.""
I pulled her against me.
"Nobody is taking you anywhere.""
Lily began crying.
"She said Grandma knew.""
I closed my eyes.
My mother.
Vanessa.
My father.
Everyone seemed to know something except me.
Detective Harris arranged for two officers to remain with Lily and Elena.
I refused to leave either of them unprotected.
At 7:30 a.m., we moved Elena to a secure hospital room.
She was weak but conscious.
When I told her about the fake security guard, she immediately became agitated.
"They know where she is.""
"Who?""
"Vanessa.""
I sat beside her.
"Why is Vanessa so interested in Lily?""
Elena stared at the blanket.
"Because Lily is the only person who can expose what happened.""
I frowned.
"She's six years old.""
"She remembers things.""
"What things?""
Elena took a slow breath.
"Before I disappeared, your father came to our house one afternoon.""
I looked at her.
"Daniel?""
"I thought he was Daniel.""
She paused.
"But he wasn't.""
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?""
"He called me by a name nobody used anymore.""
"What name?""
"Ellie.""
I frowned.
"That's your childhood nickname.""
"Only my father and your father used it.""
She looked at me.
"He asked me to keep a box safe. He said it contained evidence that could destroy several people.""
I leaned closer.
"What was inside?""
"I never opened it.""
"Where is it?""
Elena hesitated.
"Inside Lily's old dollhouse.""
I stared at her.
"The wooden dollhouse in her bedroom?""
She nodded.
"I hid it there because I thought nobody would look inside something that belonged to a child.""
I remembered the dollhouse.
Elena had built it for Lily's third birthday.
It sat near the window in her bedroom.
Lily loved arranging the tiny furniture.
I looked toward the door.
"We need to get it.""
Elena grabbed my hand.
"Marcus, don't open the box without the second key.""
I frowned.
"Your key?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"Your mother's pendant.""
I remembered the surveillance photograph.
My mother wearing the silver necklace.
The pendant engraved with 0714.
"What does it unlock?""
Elena looked toward the ceiling.
"Your father's recording.""
At 8:05 a.m., Detective Harris received confirmation that my mother had been moved from the construction yard.
The black SUV had disappeared.
But an officer had found something near the entrance.
A small silver pendant.
My mother's pendant.
It had been deliberately left beneath a brick.
Harris handed it to me inside an evidence bag.
"Do you recognize this?""
I nodded.
"It's hers.""
He studied the engraving.
"Any idea what it opens?""
I looked at the numbers.
0714.
Elena's birthday.
I turned the pendant over.
There was a tiny seam along the edge.
I pressed it.
A small compartment opened.
Inside was a folded strip of paper.
My mother's handwriting.
*THE TRUTH IS NOT IN THE RECORDING. IT IS IN THE NAME.*
I read it twice.
"What name?"" Harris asked.
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
Then I noticed a second line.
*DANIEL WAS THE NAME OF THE MAN WHO DIED. MICHAEL IS THE NAME OF THE MAN WHO TOOK HIS PLACE.*
I looked up.
"Michael.""
Detective Harris frowned.
"Your father's twin?""
I nodded.
But something still didn't make sense.
If Michael had taken Daniel's identity, then who had raised me?
Who had attended my school performances?
Who had taught me to drive?
Who had stood beside me at my wedding?
I called Elena.
She answered weakly.
"Marcus?""
"I found the pendant.""
"Did you open it?""
"Yes. It says Daniel was the one who died. Michael took his place.""
Elena was silent.
Then she whispered, "That isn't all.""
I closed my eyes.
"Please tell me there's something else.""
"There is.""
She swallowed.
"Your father had another child.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Another child?""
"Yes.""
"Who?""
Elena began crying.
"Vanessa.""
I couldn't move.
"That's impossible.""
"She was adopted.""
I stared at the wall.
"You're saying Vanessa is my father's daughter?""
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
"Then why did she come after the trust?""
Elena looked directly into the camera during our video call.
"Because she believed she was the rightful heir.""
I remembered the photograph.
Victoria and Daniel.
The property transfer.
The fake engagement.
The woman who had helped me mourn my wife.
My father's daughter had entered my life pretending to love me.
I felt physically sick.
"Does she know I'm her brother?""
Elena hesitated.
Then whispered:
"She knows.""
I sat down.
For a long moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Elena's face crumpled.
"Because your father wanted you to believe you were his only child.""
"Why?""
She looked away.
"Because you weren't.""
I felt my heart stop.
"What?""
Elena closed her eyes.
"Marcus, there's something your mother has been trying to tell you.""
I gripped the phone.
"What?""
She opened her eyes.
"You were adopted.""
The room seemed to disappear.
I stared at her.
"No.""
"Your mother raised you. Daniel raised you. But neither of them was your biological parent.""
I shook my head.
"Who was?""
Elena began crying harder.
"Robert Hayes.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Your father-in-law?""
She nodded.
"Your biological father was my father.""
I stared at her.
The man I had called my father-in-law.
The man whose daughter I had married.
The man whose property my wife had inherited.
The man who had supposedly died in a car accident.
My biological father.
I stood slowly.
"Then Elena...""
She nodded.
"Yes, Marcus.""
Her voice broke.
"We have the same father.""
I stumbled backward.
"No.""
"I didn't know when we got married.""
"Stop.""
"I swear I didn't know.""
"STOP!""
I covered my face.
My entire marriage.
My daughter.
My family.
Everything.
I wanted to wake up.
I wanted the woman in the hospital bed to be a stranger.
But Elena was crying too.
She reached toward me.
"Marcus, listen to me.""
I couldn't look at her.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"Your father left one more recording.""
I slowly turned.
"What recording?""
"The one that explains why your birth certificate was changed.""
She took a shaky breath.
"And why your mother has spent thirty-five years pretending you were her son.""
Before I could answer, the hospital television suddenly switched channels.
A news broadcast appeared.
A reporter stood outside our house.
Behind her, police officers were carrying a stretcher toward an ambulance.
I stepped closer to the screen.
The reporter spoke urgently.
"Authorities have confirmed that an unidentified woman was discovered inside a hidden underground structure beneath a private residence earlier this morning.""
My stomach dropped.
Then the camera shifted.
A familiar face appeared.
Vanessa.
She was standing beside a police officer, wearing a white coat and holding a little girl's pink backpack.
Lily's backpack.
I grabbed my phone.
The screen lit up.
A message from an unknown number.
*YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES TO GIVE ME THE KEY. OTHERWISE, YOU'LL NEVER SEE YOUR DAUGHTER AGAIN.*
I turned toward the family room.
The nurse was gone.
The two officers assigned to protect Lily were gone.
And the bed where my daughter had been sleeping was empty.
On the pillow lay her stuffed rabbit.
May you like
Pinned to its little pink ear was a note.
*ASK YOUR WIFE WHO LILY'S REAL FATHER IS.*
