Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

The recording continued.

My mother's voice sounded exhausted.

Almost broken.

"Marcus, I don't know whether you'll ever forgive me. But I need you to understand what happened before you decide who deserves your anger.""

I held Lily against my chest.

Detective Harris stood near the doorway.

My father had stopped moving.

His eyes were fixed on the little black device.

The recording crackled.

"Thirty-five years ago, I worked for Robert Hayes. He was married, wealthy, and very powerful. His wife had just given birth to a daughter named Elena.""

I looked at the photograph on the wall.

My biological sister.

The recording continued.

"Robert had an affair with a woman named Claire Morgan. Claire became pregnant. When she gave birth to a boy, Robert refused to acknowledge him publicly.""

My throat tightened.

"That boy was you, Marcus.""

I closed my eyes.

My mother continued.

"Claire died when you were three months old. Robert paid me to raise you. He told me you would have a better life if everyone believed you were my child.""

I looked toward the man standing across the room.

"Which one of you is Robert?""

Neither answered.

My mother continued.

"Robert had an identical twin brother named Michael. Michael was the father of Vanessa.""

I felt Lily shift in my arms.

The recording crackled again.

"Michael and Robert looked exactly alike, but they were very different men. Robert wanted to control the family business. Michael wanted to destroy it.""

I looked at my father.

He was gripping the edge of the door.

"One night, Michael tried to kill Robert. They fought in the construction yard. A man died.""

The recording stopped briefly.

Then my mother's voice returned.

"I was told the dead man was Michael. But I later discovered it was Robert.""

My father suddenly stepped forward.

"Turn that off!""

Detective Harris raised his weapon.

"Don't move!""

My father ignored him.

He looked directly at me.

"Your mother is lying.""

The recording continued.

"I helped Michael assume Robert's identity. I did it because he promised to protect Marcus. I believed I was saving my son.""

I stared at the man in front of me.

Michael.

Not Robert.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had taught me to shave.

The man whose funeral I had attended.

He had been Robert's killer.

And he had spent thirty-five years pretending to be him.

My mother continued.

"But Michael became obsessed with the inheritance. He wanted everything Robert had left behind. He wanted Elena's property, Marcus's inheritance, and the company.""

I looked at the black device.

"Then Vanessa discovered the truth. She knew Michael was her father. Together, they planned to remove Elena from the picture.""

My hands began shaking.

The recording continued.

"They needed Marcus to marry Vanessa. They needed Elena declared dead. And they needed Lily because...""

A sharp noise interrupted the recording.

Then my mother's voice became barely audible.

"Because Lily isn't...""

The device clicked.

Silence.

I pressed the button again.

Nothing.

"Play it!"" I shouted.

Lily shook her head.

"That's all, Daddy.""

I looked at her.

"Where did you get this?""

She pointed toward the hallway.

"Mommy put it inside my rabbit.""

I looked down.

The stuffed animal in my arms.

The one I had carried through the hospital.

A small seam had been opened along its back.

Inside was a folded photograph.

I pulled it out.

It showed Elena holding Lily as a newborn.

Beside them stood a man.

Robert Hayes.

The real Robert.

My biological father.

On the back, Elena had written:

*THE TRUTH IS IN THE ORIGINAL TEST.*

I looked at the DNA report in my hand.

The one Michael had shown me.

It was dated three weeks before Lily's birth.

I examined the bottom.

The laboratory name looked familiar.

It belonged to a company Vanessa had once managed.

I turned to Detective Harris.

"This report is fake.""

He took it.

"How do you know?""

"The date. The laboratory. Everything.""

Michael laughed.

"You're desperate, Marcus.""

I stepped toward him.

"Where is Vanessa?""

He smiled.

"Where she belongs.""

"Where?""

He looked at Lily.

"With her daughter.""

I froze.

"My daughter?""

Michael shook his head.

"No. Vanessa's daughter.""

The words struck like a physical blow.

I looked down at Lily.

Her little hands were gripping my shirt.

"That's not true.""

Michael shrugged.

"Ask Elena.""

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to destroy everything in the room.

But I remembered what Elena had said.

Lily is yours.

And I trusted my wife.

"Detective," I said, "arrest him.""

Harris stepped forward.

Michael suddenly reached into his coat.

"STOP!""

The detective raised his weapon.

Michael pulled out a small remote control.

He pressed a button.

A heavy metallic door slammed shut at the end of the hallway.

The lights went out.

Lily screamed.

I dropped to my knees and covered her.

A loud alarm began ringing.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

Michael was gone.

The office door stood open.

Detective Harris ran toward the rear corridor.

I stayed with Lily.

"Daddy?""

"I'm here.""

"Grandpa said Mommy wasn't my real mommy.""

I pulled her close.

"He's wrong.""

"But he said...""

"Listen to me, sweetheart.""

I held her face between my hands.

"Your mommy is your mommy. And I'm your daddy. Nothing anyone says can change that.""

She began crying.

I kissed her forehead.

Then I noticed something.

Her right hand was tightly closed.

"What are you holding?""

She slowly opened it.

A tiny silver key.

I recognized the engraving.

0714.

The same numbers as the other two keys.

"Where did you get this?""

"Grandma gave it to me.""

"When?""

"Before Vanessa took me.""

I stared at her.

"What did Grandma say?""

Lily looked down.

"She said to give it to Daddy when the bad man came.""

My heart tightened.

I took the key.

A small label was attached.

*ROOM 14.*

Detective Harris returned twenty minutes later.

Michael had escaped through an underground passage.

But the officers had found a vehicle near the rear fence.

Inside was Vanessa's handbag.

There were documents, cash, two passports, and a photograph of Lily.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

*TRANSFER COMPLETE AFTER THE CEREMONY.*

I looked at Harris.

"What ceremony?""

He shook his head.

"We're investigating.""

I remembered the engagement ring.

The proposal beside the swimming pool.

Vanessa had known I planned to propose.

She had encouraged me to make the moment special.

She had even chosen the location.

Suddenly, I realized something.

The proposal hadn't been a romantic surprise.

It had been part of a plan.

She wanted the engagement announcement.

The photographs.

The legal paperwork.

She wanted everyone to believe we were building a family.

Then she could take control of the estate.

I looked at the room number on Lily's key.

"Where is Room 14?""

Harris examined it.

"Possibly the archive building.""

I shook my head.

"No. This is from the old hospital.""

He looked at me.

"How do you know?""

"My father had surgery there years ago. The hospital had private recovery rooms numbered by the old wing.""

I called Elena.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"I found the recording.""

Her breathing changed.

"Did you hear everything?""

"Almost.""

I looked at Lily.

"Mom says the truth is in the original test.""

Elena was silent.

Then she whispered:

"Room 14.""

I gripped the phone.

"What's in there?""

"Your mother's original medical file.""

I frowned.

"Which mother?""

"Mine.""

I stared at the wall.

Elena continued.

"Robert told me before he died that he had kept the original DNA results from the hospital where you were born.""

I swallowed.

"Why?""

"Because he knew someone would eventually try to change your identity.""

I looked at the key.

"What will it prove?""

Elena's voice cracked.

"That you and I aren't siblings.""

I closed my eyes.

For the first time that morning, I felt a flicker of hope.

Then she added:

"But Marcus, there's another test.""

"What test?""

"The one Robert ordered after Lily was born.""

I waited.

Elena whispered:

"It proves who Lily's biological mother really is.""

I stared at my daughter.

"Elena, she's your daughter.""

"I know.""

"Then why...""

"Because the original test says something different.""

My blood ran cold.

Before I could ask another question, the hospital room door opened.

A nurse entered carrying a sealed envelope.

"Mr. Hayes?""

"Yes?""

"This was delivered for your wife.""

I took it.

There was no name on the front.

Only a single sentence.

*ROOM 14 IS ALREADY OPEN.*

Inside was a photograph.

Elena's mother.

Robert Hayes.

And a newborn baby.

Three people.

One hospital room.

On the back was a date.

The day Lily was born.

May you like

And beneath it, in Vanessa's handwriting:

*YOU'VE BEEN RAISING THE WRONG CHILD.*
