Chapter 9: The Last Person Lily Trusted
Danielle stared at the photograph.
For several seconds, she didn't move.
Then she whispered, “She was supposed to help my daughter.””
Officer Brooks carefully placed the photograph into an evidence sleeve.
“Ms. Cole, where did you get this?””
“Ethan sent it to me.””
“When?””
“Friday evening.””
“Why?””
“He said Lily was becoming difficult. He wanted me to see that Catherine had everything under control.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“He said Lily had started telling people about the documents. He said she was becoming suspicious of everyone.””
Danielle looked at her.
“She was eight. She was frightened. Of course she was suspicious.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
Officer Brooks asked another question.
“Did Mr. Miller explain why Lily was at the hospital?””
“He said she had become ill at school.””
“Did he tell you what happened afterward?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He told me not to worry because Catherine was handling everything.””
“Everything?””
“The paperwork. The calls. The hospital.””
Officer Brooks exchanged a look with Detective Harris.
“Did he ever say anything about Lily's treatment?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“He said there had been a problem.””
“What problem?””
“He said the hospital wanted to contact her parents, but Catherine had told them to wait.””
Danielle suddenly stood.
“Wait for what?””
Vanessa began crying.
“I don't know!””
“How long?””
“I don't know, Danielle!””
“You were there!””
“I was in the corridor!””
Officer Brooks raised her voice.
“Both of you, stop. Ms. Cole, I need you to be precise. What did Ethan tell you?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“He said Catherine wanted to make sure the guardianship papers were valid before the hospital released information.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“While my daughter was sick?””
Vanessa nodded.
“That's what he said.””
Danielle gripped the back of her chair.
“So somebody was worrying about paperwork while our child was in an emergency room?””
No one answered.
Officer Brooks turned to Detective Harris.
“Get the hospital's full access log. I want every person who opened Lily's file, every change made, and every communication instruction.””
He nodded and left.
Then Officer Brooks looked at Vanessa.
“Where is Ethan now?””
“I don't know.””
“When did you last speak to him?””
“Friday night.””
“What did he say?””
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
“He sent me a voice message.””
Officer Brooks took the device.
“May we listen?””
Vanessa nodded.
The recording began.
Ethan sounded irritated.
“Vanessa, don't call me again until I contact you. The plan has changed. Catherine is handling the school situation, and Marcus is going to find out about the account. If he does, tell him nothing.””
There was a pause.
Then his voice became colder.
“And whatever happens, don't let Danielle see the original document.””
The recording ended.
Officer Brooks looked at her.
“Original document?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He had another copy. He kept it in a safe.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
I leaned forward.
“Vanessa, think.””
She closed her eyes.
“He once mentioned a safe deposit box.””
“Where?””
“First National Bank. Downtown.””
Officer Brooks immediately made a note.
“Do you know the box number?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“But I remember something else.””
“What?””
“He said the original documents were the only things that could prove who had created the trust.””
I looked at Officer Brooks.
“Can you get them?””
“With the appropriate legal process, yes.””
She stood and left the room.
Danielle remained motionless.
I sat beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She looked at me.
“No.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
She stared at the photograph of Catherine and Lily.
“Marcus, do you remember when Lily had that school play?””
I did.
She had played a little sunflower.
I'd promised to attend.
I hadn't.
I'd been with Vanessa at a hotel.
Danielle continued.
“Catherine called me that evening. She told me Lily cried after the performance because she couldn't find you in the audience.””
I looked down.
“She told me she was worried about Lily's attachment issues.””
My throat tightened.
“I remember you mentioning that.””
“Yes. And you said she was making it sound worse than it was.””
Danielle's voice broke.
“Catherine was building a story about our family while we were trusting her with our daughter.””
I couldn't defend myself.
Because Danielle was right.
I'd been so eager to believe that everyone around me had good intentions that I hadn't questioned anything.
Not even when Lily had asked why Ethan called her.
Not even when Danielle said she was uncomfortable.
Not even when my daughter started believing I didn't love her.
Officer Brooks returned.
“We've contacted the bank. The safe deposit box is registered under Reed Family Holdings. A judge has authorized an emergency examination.””
“What's inside?””
“We'll know shortly.””
A few minutes later, an officer arrived carrying a sealed evidence container.
Inside was a thick folder.
Detective Harris opened it.
The first document was a bank statement.
The second was a trust agreement.
The third was a series of printed emails.
He read the first page silently.
Then his expression changed.
“Officer Brooks.””
“What?””
“You need to see this.””
She stepped closer.
The email was from Catherine Walsh to Ethan Miller.
The child has been informed that her father is planning to leave. She is now willing to cooperate with the residential arrangement.
Another email followed.
She has asked to speak with her mother. I told her that her mother is too upset to see her.
Danielle made a broken sound.
“They told her I didn't want to see her?””
Detective Harris nodded.
The next message was even worse.
The child has begun questioning the arrangement. She found the account documents. We need to move quickly.
I felt my hands trembling.
Then Detective Harris opened an attachment.
It was a scanned letter.
The heading read:
*STATEMENT OF PARENTAL CONSENT.*
It carried my name.
Danielle's name.
And a paragraph stating that we voluntarily agreed to transfer temporary residential responsibility for Lily to Catherine Walsh.
The date was six weeks earlier.
I shook my head.
“That's forged.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“We suspect so.””
Danielle stared at the document.
“Why would they need my signature?””
Officer Brooks answered.
“Because both parents' consent would make the arrangement appear legitimate.””
Danielle began crying.
Then she noticed something near the bottom.
“Wait.””
She pointed.
“There's a witness.””
I leaned closer.
The witness signature belonged to someone named Robert Hale.
I recognized the name.
“That's our family attorney.””
Danielle looked at me.
“Robert?””
I nodded slowly.
Robert had handled our wills, our house purchase, and the paperwork when Lily was born.
He had been at our wedding.
He had held Lily at the hospital after her birth.
And he had been the person who introduced me to Ethan.
I looked at Officer Brooks.
“There's no way.””
She examined the document.
“Do you know whether Mr. Hale witnessed this?””
“No. We never signed it.””
“Then we'll speak with him.””
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Robert Hale.
I stared at the screen.
Officer Brooks gestured for me to answer.
I put it on speaker.
“Robert?””
His voice sounded calm.
“Marcus. I've been trying to reach you.””
“Why?””
“I heard about Lily. I'm terribly sorry.””
My stomach tightened.
“Thank you.””
There was a pause.
Then he asked, “Have the police shown you any documents?””
I looked at Officer Brooks.
“Yes.””
His breathing changed.
“What documents?””
“The guardianship agreement.””
Silence.
Then Robert said, “Listen to me. You need to stop cooperating with the police.””
I froze.
“Why?””
“Because you don't understand what you're dealing with.””
Officer Brooks leaned toward the phone.
“Mr. Hale, this is Officer Brooks. Are you aware that your signature appears on an unauthorized guardianship document?””
Another pause.
Then Robert laughed nervously.
“Officer, I think there's been a misunderstanding.””
“Were you involved in preparing the agreement?””
“I'd prefer to discuss that with my attorney.””
“That's your right.””
Robert's voice suddenly became sharper.
“Marcus, I need you to listen. There are things about your daughter you haven't been told.””
My heart pounded.
“What things?””
“Lily wasn't just a beneficiary. She was the only person who could unlock the original trust.””
I stared at the phone.
“What?””
Robert continued.
“Ethan needed her cooperation. Catherine was supposed to handle the transition, but the child discovered the documents.””
“Why would an eight-year-old have to unlock a trust?””
“Because her name was used as the verification beneficiary.””
I felt sick.
“Who created it?””
Robert went quiet.
Then he said something that made Danielle grab my arm.
“I did.””
The call ended.
Officer Brooks immediately called for officers to locate Robert.
Danielle was crying.
I sat frozen, unable to process what I'd heard.
My family's attorney.
The man who had written our wills.
The man who had helped us buy our first home.
The man who had attended Lily's birthday parties.
He had admitted creating the trust.
And he had known my daughter was involved.
A few minutes later, Detective Harris returned with another document.
“We found the original trust instructions.””
Officer Brooks took it.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she looked at me.
“Mr. Reed, there's a beneficiary verification note attached.””
“What does it say?””
She hesitated.
Then she turned the paper toward me.
The note contained a single sentence.
The child must be present to confirm the final authorization.
I stared at it.
“Present where?””
Detective Harris answered.
“At the bank. The original agreement required Lily to appear in person before the trust could be activated.””
Danielle shook her head.
“She was eight.””
Officer Brooks nodded.
“That's why we're treating this as a serious criminal investigation.””
I looked at the document again.
Then I noticed the date of the scheduled appointment.
Friday.
The same day Lily died.
The appointment time was 5:00 p.m.
I checked the hospital timeline.
At 4:32, the forged authorization had been entered.
At 5:00, Lily was supposed to appear at the bank.
But she never made it.
I looked at Officer Brooks.
“Did Ethan know she wasn't going to survive?””
She didn't answer immediately.
Then her phone rang.
She listened for several seconds.
Her face changed.
“What do you mean they found him?””
She ended the call.
“Ethan Miller has been located.””
“Where?””
“Outside the city. He was arrested twenty minutes ago.””
I stood.
“Can I speak to him?””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
Officer Brooks looked at Danielle.
May you like
Then she said quietly:
“Because he has already requested to speak with us. And he says he knows who really caused Lily's death.””
