Chapter 10: The Last Promise I Made My Daughter

The interrogation room was colder than I expected.

Ethan sat behind the metal table, his hands cuffed in front of him. His expensive watch was gone. His shirt was wrinkled, and a fresh bruise marked his cheek.

For the first time in twelve years, he looked like a stranger.

Officer Brooks stood beside me.

“You can observe from behind the glass. You cannot interrupt the interview.””

“I understand.””

Through the glass, Detective Harris placed a folder on the table.

Ethan glanced at it.

Then he smiled.

“Where's Marcus?””

Detective Harris didn't answer.

“I know he's here.””

“Mr. Miller, we're discussing your involvement in the fraudulent guardianship arrangement involving Lily Reed.””

Ethan leaned back.

“That's not why you're here.””

“Then tell us why you think we're here.””

Ethan's smile disappeared.

“Because of Robert Hale.””

Detective Harris opened the folder.

“We know about the trust.””

“Then you know Robert created it.””

“We also know you managed the financial transfers.””

Ethan shrugged.

“I was following instructions.””

“Whose?””

He looked directly toward the observation glass.

“His.””

My stomach tightened.

“Marcus Reed.””

Detective Harris remained calm.

“Mr. Reed did not authorize the trust.””

Ethan laughed.

“You really believe that?””

He leaned forward.

“Marcus signed everything.””

I felt my hands clench.

“He forged my signature,” I whispered.

Officer Brooks shook her head.

“Let him talk.””

Inside the room, Detective Harris slid a document across the table.

“This signature?””

Ethan glanced at it.

“Looks like his.””

“It was digitally reproduced.””

Ethan shrugged.

“Prove it.””

Detective Harris opened another folder.

“We recovered your communications with Robert Hale. They describe a plan to move Lily into temporary residential care, activate a trust, and transfer company funds.””

Ethan's face hardened.

“Then you should be questioning Robert.””

“We are.””

Ethan looked toward the glass again.

“Marcus should know the truth.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“What truth?”” I whispered.

Officer Brooks remained silent.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Lily was never supposed to be in danger.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Then explain the hospital authorization.””

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“Catherine made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“She told the hospital not to contact the parents directly.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought the guardianship arrangement was already approved.””

“Was it?””

“No.””

“Did you know it wasn't?””

Ethan hesitated.

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

Detective Harris continued.

“Did you tell Catherine to change Lily's emergency contact instructions?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you send the message telling Lily not to call her father?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus was supposed to stay in Savannah.””

I stared at the glass.

The words hit harder than I expected.

Detective Harris asked, “What did Savannah have to do with Lily?””

Ethan looked down.

“I needed Marcus away from home. Robert needed time to complete the account transfers. Vanessa was supposed to keep him distracted.””

“Was the affair part of your plan?””

Ethan shrugged.

“Vanessa was willing.””

My fists tightened.

“And Lily?””

Ethan's expression changed.

“She wasn't supposed to find the documents.””

“What happened when she did?””

“She took a photograph.””

“Then?””

“She threatened to tell Danielle.””

Detective Harris placed the voice recorder transcript on the table.

“We recovered a recording in which you discuss keeping Lily away from the phone.””

Ethan said nothing.

Detective Harris continued.

“We also recovered messages about accelerating the residential placement.””

Ethan finally looked up.

“Robert was the one who wanted the money.””

“Why?””

“Because he was in debt. He'd been moving client funds for years. He needed a large transfer to cover what he'd stolen.””

“And you?””

Ethan swallowed.

“I wanted the company.””

I felt sick.

“You wanted my company?””

He nodded.

“Robert told me Marcus was careless. He said if we moved enough money, we could force a sale. Then I could buy the business through another corporation.””

“And Lily?””

Ethan stared at the table.

“She was the beneficiary.””

“Why?””

“Because the trust needed a child beneficiary who was directly related to Marcus.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Did you know the trust required Lily to appear at the bank?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know she was ill on Friday?””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“I knew she was at the hospital.””

“Did you tell anyone to delay medical treatment?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone to delay contacting her parents?””

Ethan looked away.

“I told Catherine to keep things quiet until the paperwork was finished.””

Detective Harris closed the folder.

“Why?””

Ethan finally looked up.

“Because I thought she would recover.””

The room went silent.

I felt something inside me collapse.

He knew.

He knew my daughter was sick.

He knew she needed her parents.

And he had chosen paperwork over a phone call.

I wanted to break through the glass.

I wanted to grab him by the collar.

Instead, I stood there listening.

Detective Harris spoke again.

“Mr. Miller, the medical examiner has identified evidence of a serious delay in the escalation of care. We are still investigating the medical consequences of the unauthorized communication restrictions.””

Ethan looked startled.

“I didn't know that.””

“Did you tell Catherine that Lily's parents should not be contacted?””

He didn't answer.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

The admission hung in the room.

Detective Harris stood.

“That's enough for now.””

Ethan suddenly leaned forward.

“Wait.””

The detective stopped.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

Ethan looked toward the glass.

“Tell Marcus that Robert wasn't the only person involved.””

Officer Brooks stiffened.

“Who else?””

Ethan smiled weakly.

“Ask the person who signed the original school assessment.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?”” I whispered.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Danielle.””

I turned toward Officer Brooks.

“That can't be true.””

She didn't answer.

Inside the room, Ethan continued.

“Danielle signed a form months ago. It was supposed to be an evaluation of Lily's emotional well-being. Robert used it as the foundation for the guardianship arrangement.””

I shook my head.

“My wife wouldn't do that.””

Officer Brooks looked at me.

“We need to verify it.””

I walked out before she could stop me.

Danielle was waiting in the hallway.

She stood when she saw my face.

“What happened?””

I told her.

She listened without moving.

Then she whispered, “I did sign something.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“Catherine gave me a school evaluation form. She said Lily had been struggling with separation anxiety.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because it wasn't anything unusual. It was a routine assessment.””

“Did you sign a guardianship document?””

“No!””

She grabbed my arm.

“Marcus, I swear I didn't.””

I believed her.

She looked toward the interview room.

“Ethan said I signed something?””

I nodded.

Danielle began crying.

“I remember the form. Catherine told me it was permission for the school counselor to speak with Lily if she needed help.””

I felt cold.

“Did you read it?””

“I read the first page.””

She covered her mouth.

“I didn't know there was another page.””

Officer Brooks approached.

“Mrs. Reed, we'll need to see the original form.””

Danielle nodded.

“I'll cooperate.””

Then she looked at me.

“Marcus, there's something else.””

“What?””

“The day Lily died, Catherine called me.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Just before the ambulance arrived.””

“What did she say?””

Danielle's eyes filled.

“She told me Lily had become upset at school and wanted to speak to me. She said I should come immediately.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried. I called you.””

I looked down.

The fifty-one missed calls.

The unanswered messages.

My daughter asking for me.

Danielle continued.

“When I reached the hospital, Catherine was already there. She told me Lily had been asking for you.””

I swallowed.

“Did she say anything else?””

Danielle nodded.

“She told me Lily had said something important before becoming unwell.””

“What?””

Danielle's voice broke.

“She said Lily had discovered who was really behind the trust.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Who?””

Danielle shook her head.

“She didn't tell me. She said Lily had whispered a name, but Catherine couldn't understand it.””

Officer Brooks looked at her.

“Did you ask her what name?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“She said she'd tell me later.””

Danielle closed her eyes.

“But she never did.””

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then Officer Brooks received another call.

She listened.

Her expression changed.

“What do you mean the medical examiner found another note?””

She turned toward us.

“Where was it?””

A pause.

Then she nodded.

“Secure it immediately.””

She ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

“During the examination of Lily's belongings, the hospital found a folded piece of paper inside the lining of her school backpack.””

Danielle's hand flew to her mouth.

“What did it say?””

Officer Brooks took a photograph from her folder.

It was a small piece of pink paper.

Lily's handwriting.

Mommy, if Daddy comes home, tell him I know he didn't send those messages.

My eyes filled.

Below that was another sentence.

I heard Uncle Ethan talking to someone on the phone. He said the money was for the person who helped him.

I stared at the page.

Then I noticed the final line.

The person was someone Mommy knows.

Danielle began shaking.

“Who?””

Officer Brooks turned the photograph over.

There was another message on the back.

I think it's the nice lady from school.

Catherine Walsh.

The final piece was falling into place.

But there was something else.

Lily had written a name beneath it.

A name so small that the letters almost disappeared into the fold.

Officer Brooks enlarged the photograph.

Danielle leaned forward.

I read the name.

And my heart stopped.

It wasn't Catherine.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't Robert.

It was the name of the person who had been standing beside Danielle at the hospital.

The person who had promised to help her.

The person who had told her that everything would be okay.

*Dr. Samuel Price.*

Lily's physician.

I looked at Officer Brooks.

“Why would my daughter's doctor be involved?””

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “We're bringing him in.””

Danielle gripped my hand.

For the first time since Lily died, I held on.

We had spent days searching for the person who had taken our daughter's father away from her.

Now we were finally going to learn what had happened in that hospital room.

And whether anyone had deliberately ignored the little girl who kept asking for us.

The following morning, Dr. Price arrived at the station with his attorney.

He looked exhausted.

When Officer Brooks placed Lily's note on the table, his face went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

“From her backpack.””

He stared at the handwriting.

Then he whispered, “She wasn't supposed to know.””

I felt Danielle's hand tighten around mine.

Officer Brooks leaned forward.

“Know what, Doctor?””

He looked toward the door.

Then back at us.

“Ethan didn't just want the trust activated. He wanted Lily's medical records.””

“Why?””

Dr. Price swallowed.

“Because those records contained evidence of a medical condition that had been deliberately concealed.””

Danielle went still.

“What condition?””

The doctor looked directly at me.

“Your daughter had been receiving medication without your knowledge.””

My blood ran cold.

“What medication?””

He lowered his eyes.

May you like

And when he finally answered, the words changed everything.

“It wasn't prescribed by me.””
