Chapter 7: The Secret Account
The police took us back to the station that evening.
Danielle barely spoke during the drive.
She held Lily's pink folder on her lap, although Officer Brooks had already placed the original documents into an evidence bag. She seemed afraid that if she let go of anything connected to our daughter, she might lose another piece of her.
I understood.
I felt the same way.
Every photograph, every drawing, every recording had become precious.
And every new discovery made me wish I'd paid closer attention when Lily was still alive to tell me what she knew.
At the station, Officer Brooks led us into a conference room.
A digital investigator named Detective Harris was waiting with two laptops.
“Mr. Reed, Mrs. Reed, we've examined the old phone recovered from the blue house.””
I leaned forward.
“What did you find?””
“Several deleted conversations, photographs, and financial documents. We also recovered the original voicemail from your daughter.””
“Can we hear it again?””
Detective Harris nodded.
He pressed a button.
Lily's little voice filled the room.
“Daddy, it's Lily. I know you said not to call, but I found something.””
I closed my eyes.
“I think Uncle Ethan is trying to take me away.””
The recording ended.
Danielle began crying silently.
Detective Harris waited before continuing.
“There's something else. The phone contained several photographs of documents associated with a company called Reed Family Holdings.””
I frowned.
“I've never heard of that company.””
Officer Brooks exchanged a look with him.
“That's what we thought.””
Detective Harris opened a file.
The document displayed my full legal name, my date of birth, and my signature.
Beneath it was a business registration number.
“This company was established seven months ago.””
“By whom?””
“Officially, you.””
I shook my head.
“That's impossible.””
“Your identity was used to register it.””
I stared at the screen.
The company had an account balance of nearly $640,000.
My stomach tightened.
“Where did that money come from?””
“Several transfers from your legitimate business accounts. Some payments also originated from accounts belonging to outside investors.””
I turned toward Officer Brooks.
“Ethan stole from my company?””
“That's one possibility we're investigating.””
Detective Harris enlarged the transaction history.
There were payments to property management companies, private transportation services, and something labeled as a residential care arrangement.
Danielle pointed toward the screen.
“What's that payment?””
Detective Harris clicked it.
A document appeared.
It was an invoice from a private family placement agency.
The description read:
Residential assessment and temporary guardianship preparation.
Danielle's face went white.
“They were trying to take Lily?””
Nobody answered immediately.
I looked at the invoice.
The date was six weeks before Lily died.
“Why would Ethan need to do that?””
Officer Brooks folded her hands.
“We're investigating whether he intended to create a situation in which you and your wife would be considered unable to provide stable care.””
I felt sick.
“He was going to make us look like bad parents?””
“Possibly. But we need more evidence before reaching that conclusion.””
Danielle shook her head.
“He told my daughter her father was leaving. He made her believe she had to choose between us.””
Her voice broke.
“What kind of person does that to a child?””
Detective Harris opened another file.
“There's a message between Mr. Miller and an unidentified contact that may help explain the financial activity.””
He read it aloud.
The father is distracted. The mother is suspicious. The child has started asking questions.
The reply came several minutes later.
Then accelerate the plan. We cannot afford another delay.
My fingers went numb.
“Who sent that?””
“We haven't identified the second account holder yet.””
“Can you trace it?””
“We're working on that.””
I leaned back.
Ethan hadn't simply been lying to me.
He had built an entire operation around my family.
And Vanessa had helped him.
I looked at Danielle.
“I'm sorry.””
She stared at the table.
“Stop saying that.””
“I don't know what else to say.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
I swallowed.
“What truth?””
“Why did Ethan want our daughter?””
I looked toward Detective Harris.
He opened another document.
“This is a draft residential agreement recovered from the phone. It lists Lily as the proposed beneficiary of a trust.””
I frowned.
“A trust?””
“Yes. The proposed trust contained assets from Reed Family Holdings.””
I stared at the figures.
The amount was $640,000.
The same amount shown in the account.
Detective Harris continued.
“The agreement names Mr. Miller as the proposed administrator. However, there's a condition. The trust could only be activated if certain guardianship requirements were satisfied.””
Danielle leaned forward.
“What requirements?””
“Temporary residential placement under an approved guardian.””
I stared at the screen.
“So he needed Lily to live at the blue house?””
“That's what the paperwork suggests.””
“But why?””
Detective Harris enlarged the final page.
There was a clause about an inheritance arrangement.
Lily was listed as the sole beneficiary.
I felt my heart pounding.
“Why would someone create a trust for an eight-year-old?””
Officer Brooks answered carefully.
“Sometimes there are legitimate reasons. But the surrounding circumstances make this arrangement suspicious.””
I looked at the signature.
My name was at the bottom.
Danielle's was beside it.
Neither of us had signed.
Then I noticed something.
“Wait.””
I pointed toward the date.
“That's the week Ethan asked me to sign some company restructuring documents.””
Detective Harris looked up.
“Do you remember what you signed?””
“Not exactly.””
“Did you read the documents?””
I hesitated.
“No.””
Danielle closed her eyes.
I continued.
“He brought a folder into my office. He said it was routine. I was on my way to a meeting, so I signed where he marked.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“Do you remember whether your wife was present?””
“No.””
Danielle looked at me.
“Marcus, I never signed anything.””
“I know.””
“Then how did my signature get there?””
Nobody had an answer.
A knock sounded at the door.
Another officer entered and whispered something to Officer Brooks.
Her expression changed.
“Where?””
The officer handed her a piece of paper.
She read it, then looked at us.
“We've located Vanessa Cole.””
“Where is she?”” I asked.
“She's at the station.””
“Bring her in.””
Officer Brooks hesitated.
“She's requested legal counsel.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Does she know Ethan is missing?””
“Yes.””
“Then she knows more than she's telling you.””
Officer Brooks stood.
“We'll continue the interview when her attorney arrives.””
As she walked toward the door, Danielle suddenly spoke.
“Officer?””
Brooks turned.
“Yes?””
“Did anyone ever ask Lily to sign anything?””
The room went silent.
Detective Harris opened another folder.
“Actually, yes.””
He removed a scanned document.
It was a colorful sheet of paper with a little flower drawn in the corner.
Lily's handwriting appeared at the bottom.
I agree to stay at the blue house if Daddy comes too.
Danielle covered her mouth.
I stared at the paper.
She had signed it.
Not because she understood what it meant.
Because somebody had convinced her it was a way to keep her father.
I couldn't stop the tears.
Then Detective Harris pointed toward the bottom of the page.
“There's something else.””
A handwritten note appeared beneath Lily's signature.
If Daddy doesn't come, I don't want to go.
Danielle began sobbing.
And I finally understood the cruelty of what Ethan had done.
He hadn't just made my daughter believe I didn't want her.
He had used her love for me to make her agree to something she didn't understand.
Officer Brooks took the document.
“We're going to establish who prepared this.””
I looked at the doorway.
“Find Ethan.””
“We're doing everything we can.””
But as she left, my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
You found the money. Now find out who signed the hospital order.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
It wasn't Ethan.
