Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Betrayal
The room felt smaller.
Like the walls had moved closer while I wasn’t paying attention.
Because there was one sentence I couldn’t escape.
*The person helping Daniel was someone inside your family.*
Not a stranger.
Not a distant enemy.
Someone who sat at our dinner table.
Someone who hugged me.
Someone who knew my childhood stories.
Someone who knew exactly where to hurt me.
I looked at Marcus.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who was helping my uncle?””
His face was pale.
“Nia…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I’m done with pauses. I’m done with everyone looking at each other like they’re deciding how much truth I can handle.””
I pointed at him.
“Tell me.””
Marcus looked away.
And that was when I realized something.
He wasn’t afraid of my reaction.
He was afraid of the name.
“Marcus.””
He closed his eyes.
“Your father didn’t know at first.””
“Know what?””
“That someone close to him was leaking information to Daniel.””
I waited.
“Then how did he find out?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Because he set a trap.””
I frowned.
“A trap?””
He nodded.
“Your father suspected Daniel had help. So he gave different pieces of information to different people.””
My stomach tightened.
“To see who would pass it along.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“And Daniel showed up with information only one person had.””
The room went silent.
I could barely breathe.
“Who had that information?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Who?””
His voice was barely audible.
“Lena.””
I turned toward my sister.
Everything stopped.
Lena’s face changed.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Nia…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t.””
I stared at her.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
She didn’t.
That was the worst part.
She didn’t immediately deny it.
She just stood there.
And the little girl inside me—the one who used to share secrets with her sister under blankets—felt something break.
“Lena.””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t help him.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You did.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I gave him information because I thought I was protecting myself.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
Lena wiped her face.
“When the company collapsed, Daniel came to me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew I blamed Marcus.””
She looked at him.
“And I did.””
Marcus didn’t react.
Maybe because he deserved some of that blame.
Maybe because he knew this wasn’t about forgiveness anymore.
“It wasn’t hard for Daniel to convince me.””
Lena looked at me.
“He told me Marcus had betrayed me.””
I stared.
“And you believed him?””
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“But then I found out the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That Daniel was using me.””
She looked at the documents.
“He wasn’t trying to recover the money. He was trying to erase the evidence.””
I looked at Marcus.
“So you knew?””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And you still let me believe Lena was the enemy?””
His face tightened.
“I didn’t want you caught between us.””
I laughed quietly.
“Caught between you?””
I looked around.
“Marcus, I was already between you. I was your wife.””
He looked down.
I turned back to Lena.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked devastated.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I stared.
“I betrayed you.””
Her voice cracked.
“And every time I tried to fix it, I remembered what I had done.””
I shook my head.
“So instead you created a fake affair?””
She nodded.
“I thought if you saw Marcus was hiding something, you would start looking deeper.””
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“It’s the truth.””
I wanted to hate her.
Maybe it would have been easier.
But the worst kind of betrayal is the one where the person who hurt you is still someone you love.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A picture appeared.
A photo of my father.
Standing with Daniel.
And another person.
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the third person.
My mother.
The caption below the photo said:
*Ask your mother what happened that night.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
“Daniel sent this.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“What?””
I showed him.
His expression went from confusion to fear.
“No.””
“What?””
He took the phone.
He zoomed in.
Then he went completely still.
“What?””
He handed it back.
“Nia…”
“What?””
His voice was quiet.
“That picture was taken the night your father died.””
My fingers went numb.
I looked at the image again.
My father.
Daniel.
My mother.
Together.
Why?
I looked at Marcus.
“You said my father called you that night.””
“Yes.””
“Before he died?””
“Yes.””
“And my mother was with him?””
He nodded slowly.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at Lena.
“Did you?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Nobody had answers.
And that scared me.
Because for the first time, it felt like we were all chasing the truth.
Even the people who had been hiding things.
My mother called again.
I answered immediately.
“Mom.””
There was silence.
Then:
“Nia.””
Her voice sounded broken.
“You saw it.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
“I knew he would eventually use that.””
My chest tightened.
“Mom, what happened?””
She started crying.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I closed my eyes.
“Everyone says that.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
My voice became firm.
“I need the truth.””
A long pause.
Then my mother whispered:
“Your father wasn’t meeting Daniel that night.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was meeting me.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Marcus.
Then Lena.
“Why?””
My mother took a shaky breath.
“Because your father discovered something.””
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“He discovered Daniel wasn’t the only person stealing from the company.””
My stomach turned.
“Mom…”
“I told him he needed to stop.””
“Stop what?””
“Looking.””
I felt cold.
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“Because the person he suspected…”
I held my breath.
“…was someone he loved.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
My mother started crying.
“Nia…”
“Who?””
Her answer came quietly.
And when I heard it, I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
“It was me.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone heard.
Everyone knew.
My mother.
My father.
My uncle.
My husband.
My sister.
A family built on secrets.
Marcus slowly stepped toward me.
“Nia…”
I raised my hand.
“Don’t.””
My voice was empty.
“I need to go.””
“Nia, please.””
I looked at him.
“Five years ago, my father died.””
My eyes filled.
“And every person standing here knew something about it.””
I looked at Lena.
“My sister.””
Then Marcus.
“My husband.””
Then my phone.
“My mother.””
I shook my head.
“And I was the only person who didn’t know my own life.””
I walked toward the door.
Nobody stopped me.
Because nobody had the right.
But before I reached the exit, Marcus’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed instantly.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He just stared.
Then slowly looked at me.
“Nia…”
I froze.
“Who is it?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“It’s your father’s number.””
My heart stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus answered.
And from the speaker came a voice we all recognized.
A voice that should have been impossible to hear.
A voice that had been gone for three years.
My father’s voice.
“Nia…”
Everyone froze.
May you like
Then the recording continued.
“If you’re hearing this, it means I didn’t get the chance to tell you the truth myself.””
