Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Lie

I read Lena’s message three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I couldn’t understand the meaning behind them.

*I’m not trying to take her husband. I’m trying to expose what he did.*

Expose.

That word sat on the screen like a warning.

I looked at Marcus.

For the first time that night, I didn’t see a husband who had made a mistake.

I saw a man standing in the middle of a story where everyone seemed to know the ending except me.

“What did you do?””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia…”

“What did you do?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence was becoming his answer.

I turned away.

“I can’t believe this.””

“Nia, please.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Every time I ask you a question, there’s another secret underneath the last one.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“I’m trying to explain.””

“You’ve been trying to explain for months.””

His face tightened.

“I didn’t want you involved.””

I turned back.

“Don’t say that.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s what people say when they make decisions for someone else.””

My voice cracked.

“You didn’t protect me. You removed my choice.””

The salon was quiet.

Simone stood near the counter, looking like she wished she could disappear.

I looked at her.

“You knew there was something bigger.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you still pretended to be the problem?””

Her expression changed.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

I stared at her.

“Everyone always says that.””

She looked down.

“Lena threatened me.””

That caught my attention.

“What?””

Simone swallowed.

“She came here two weeks ago. She knew about my salon. She knew about my reputation.””

“What did she say?””

Simone took a deep breath.

“She said if I didn’t help her, she would tell people I was involved with Marcus.””

I frowned.

“But you weren’t.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“But nobody would believe that once the rumors started.””

I looked at Marcus.

“So she planned everything.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

I felt my patience disappearing.

“Why, Marcus?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because she thinks I ruined her life.””

The words made me freeze.

“Ruined her life?””

He nodded.

“Before I met you, Lena and I had a complicated history.””

I laughed quietly.

“Complicated.””

Another word people used when the truth was uglier.

Marcus sat down.

“I was twenty-four.””

I didn’t move.

“I had just started working. I was immature. Lena and I became friends.””

“Friends?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Then why did she have feelings for you?””

He looked away.

“Because I let things get too close.””

The honesty surprised me.

Not because it made things better.

Because it was the first time he admitted something without being forced.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus sighed.

“She was there during a difficult time in my life. My dad had just gotten sick. I was stressed. Lost.””

“And she helped you.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“And I leaned on her emotionally.””

I stared at him.

“But you weren’t together.””

“No.””

“Did you kiss her?””

A long pause.

My heart sank.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“Once.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“Once?””

He nodded.

“Before you.””

I looked away.

It shouldn’t have hurt.

That was the part that made me angry.

It happened before me.

Before our relationship.

Before our marriage.

But it hurt because it changed something.

My sister.

My husband.

Two people I trusted.

A piece of my life that existed before I even knew it was broken.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I knew you would see her differently.””

I looked at him.

“She’s my sister.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My eyes burned.

“You don’t understand what it feels like to find out the two people closest to you had a whole chapter of their lives you weren’t allowed to read.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I was afraid of losing you.””

“And now?””

He looked down.

“Now I might lose you anyway.””

The honesty hurt.

Because for the first time, I believed he understood.

But understanding the damage doesn’t undo it.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

From Lena.

I almost didn’t open it.

Almost.

But I needed answers.

The message contained a photo.

A document.

My fingers went cold.

“What is it?””

Marcus asked.

I didn’t respond.

I opened the image.

It was a contract.

A business contract.

At the bottom was Marcus’s signature.

And beside it?

Another signature.

Lena’s.

I looked closer.

The date was five years ago.

Five years.

The year Marcus and I got married.

“What is this?””

Marcus stood.

I held up the phone.

“Why did you sign a contract with my sister the same month we got married?””

His face changed.

And that was the moment I knew.

This was bigger than a kiss.

Bigger than hidden messages.

Bigger than a woman trying to destroy a marriage.

Marcus looked at the document.

“Nia…”

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“That’s not supposed to exist anymore.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He stepped closer.

“Lena wasn’t just someone I knew before you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what was she?””

Marcus swallowed.

“She was my business partner.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“She helped me start my first company.””

I looked at the contract again.

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t I know this?””

“Because the company failed.””

“And?””

“And Lena blamed me.””

I stared.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked toward the salon door.

Like he was afraid someone would hear.

“She invested everything she had.””

“And you lost it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His silence returned.

The same silence.

The same hesitation.

The same feeling that there was something buried underneath.

“Marcus.””

He finally spoke.

“Because someone stole money from the company.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

And then I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of the truth coming out.

“Nia…”

“Who stole the money?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

His voice dropped.

“The person who had access to our accounts.””

I waited.

“Marcus.””

He closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“The person who had access…”

A pause.

“…was your father.””

I froze.

The room disappeared.

My father had been dead for three years.

The man who taught me honesty.

The man Marcus called “Dad.””

The man who walked me down the aisle when my father couldn’t.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

“That’s a lie.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I wish it was.””

I stared at him.

“You’re telling me my father stole from you?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“I’m telling you I found evidence that someone used his account.””

I felt dizzy.

“Then why is Lena blaming you?””

“Because she thought I covered it up.””

“Did you?””

Marcus looked at me.

And before he could answer, the salon door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

A woman I hadn’t seen in years.

A woman holding a folder against her chest.

Lena.

Her eyes met mine.

Then Marcus’s.

And she said the words that made my entire body go cold.

“I knew you would eventually find out.””

She placed the folder on the counter.

“But I didn’t expect you to find out this way.””

I stared at my sister.

“What are you doing here?””

Lena looked at Marcus.

“I’m here to finish what I started.””

Then she looked back at me.

“And Nia…”

May you like

Her expression softened.

“I’m here because you deserve to know what your husband did to your family.””
