Chapter 6: The Truth My Family Buried

Lena stood in the middle of the salon like she had been waiting for this moment for years.

Maybe she had.

That was the part I couldn’t understand.

My sister had always been the person who knew how to enter a room and make everyone feel comfortable.

She was the one who brought extra food to family dinners.

The one who remembered birthdays.

The one who called me every Sunday morning just to ask, “How are you really doing?””

But now she stood in front of me holding a folder full of secrets.

And I didn’t know which version of Lena was real.

“Say it,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Say what you came here to say.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Nia, don’t do this.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because you’re upset.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m finally paying attention.””

Lena watched us silently.

Then she placed the folder on the counter.

“I didn’t come here to hurt you.””

I laughed softly.

“Really?””

My eyes moved between her and Marcus.

“Because from where I’m standing, everyone has been doing a great job of that.””

Lena looked down.

“I know how this looks.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your husband and your sister have been sharing pieces of a story that you were never part of.””

Her face changed.

A flash of guilt crossed her eyes.

Good.

At least she felt something.

“Nia, I never wanted to be between you and Marcus.””

I stared at her.

“Then why were you?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus looked at her.

“Tell her the truth.””

Lena looked at him.

A bitter smile appeared on her face.

“You want me to tell the truth now?””

“Yes.””

She laughed.

“That’s interesting coming from you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Lena looked at me.

“Your husband has spent years making himself look like the victim.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

She turned toward him.

“You never told her what happened after the company failed.””

Marcus said nothing.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Lena took a deep breath.

“The company didn’t just fail.””

She opened the folder.

“It collapsed.””

She pulled out papers and placed them on the counter.

“Six months before you married Marcus, we had investors. Clients. A future.””

She looked at Marcus.

“Then money started disappearing.””

I stared at the documents.

Bank statements.

Transfers.

Records.

My head started spinning.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me this?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“Because it wasn’t your problem.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

Lena nodded.

“Exactly.””

She looked at me.

“That’s what I tried to tell him.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“You don’t know what I was dealing with.””

“And you don’t know what I lost.””

The anger in Lena’s voice surprised me.

This wasn’t jealousy.

This wasn’t a woman trying to steal someone’s husband.

This was something older.

Something deeper.

She pointed at the documents.

“I lost my savings.””

She looked at Marcus.

“I lost my apartment.””

Then she looked at me.

“And I lost my trust in the person who promised he would never betray me.””

I swallowed.

“Are you saying Marcus stole from you?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

That surprised me.

Lena shook her head.

“I’m saying Marcus knew something was wrong and he hid it.””

Everyone went silent.

I looked at Marcus.

“Did you?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Marcus.””

He finally looked at me.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

His face fell.

I stepped closer.

“Did you know something was wrong?””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

The word felt like a punch.

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

He sighed.

“Because I was trying to figure it out.””

“For five years?””

“I didn’t know who to trust.””

Lena laughed.

“You could have trusted me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You threatened my marriage.””

Her expression changed.

“And you destroyed my life.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both of them stopped.

I looked at Lena.

“I need facts.””

Then I looked at Marcus.

“Not accusations.””

I pointed at the folder.

“What is this?””

Lena answered.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She looked at me.

“That the person who took the money wasn’t Marcus.””

I blinked.

“But you just said—”

“I said he knew something was wrong.””

She looked toward the papers.

“I never said he stole it.””

The room became silent.

I turned toward Marcus.

“Then why did you let me believe that was the accusation?””

His face tightened.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“Of who was responsible.””

I waited.

He looked down.

“The person who moved the money…”

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

He swallowed.

“Your father wasn’t the one who did it.””

I froze.

“But you said—”

“I said someone used his account.””

He looked at Lena.

“And we finally found out who.””

Lena slowly opened another document.

“This came from the original company records.””

She turned the paper toward me.

At the top was a name.

My breathing stopped.

Because I knew that name.

Everyone knew that name.

My uncle.

My father’s older brother.

Daniel.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Lena looked at me sadly.

“I thought so too.””

I stared at the document.

“My uncle?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father trusted him.””

“And you knew?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I suspected.””

I felt anger rise again.

“You suspected my uncle stole money from you and you said nothing?””

“I had no proof.””

“You had five years!””

“I was trying to protect your family.””

I laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

My eyes filled.

“But somehow I’m always the last person who knows.””

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no defense.

There wasn’t.

I looked at Lena.

“Then why did you pretend Simone was involved?””

Her expression changed.

Because that question mattered.

She looked uncomfortable.

“I needed you to start asking questions.””

I stared.

“So you destroyed my marriage to get my attention?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I was trying to show you that something was wrong.””

“You could have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

Her face fell.

“Three years ago.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at Marcus.

“He stopped me.””

I turned.

Marcus looked away.

“Marcus?””

He didn’t deny it.

“I asked her not to involve you.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel threatened us.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“After we discovered the money trail, Daniel found out.””

My voice dropped.

“You’re saying my uncle threatened you?””

“Yes.””

Lena nodded.

“He told us if we went public, he would destroy the family.””

I looked at both of them.

My entire life suddenly felt like a puzzle where someone had removed the most important pieces.

“So all of this…”

I pointed around the room.

“The fake name.””

“Simone.””

“The messages.””

“All of it.””

I looked at Lena.

“You created a fake affair because you wanted me to uncover financial fraud?””

Her eyes filled.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds insane.””

“I know.””

She wiped a tear away.

“But I didn’t know what else to do.””

I stared at her.

My sister.

My husband.

Two people I should have been able to trust.

Two people who had lied.

But maybe not for the reasons I thought.

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But something made me answer.

A man’s voice came through.

“Nia?””

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized it.

It was my uncle Daniel.

“How did you get this number?””

He ignored the question.

“You need to stop digging into things that don’t concern you.””

I stood frozen.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“Still asking questions, just like your father.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Your father didn’t die without knowing the truth.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

“He left something for you.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What did he leave?””

Daniel paused.

Then whispered:

“A recording.””

The call ended.

And in the silence that followed, Lena slowly looked at Marcus.

“Does she know?””

Marcus’s face turned pale.

“No.””

I looked at them.

“Know what?””

Neither of them answered.

May you like

Then Lena whispered:

“Your father recorded everything before he died.””
