Chapter 7: The Recording My Father Left Behind

I couldn’t move.

Not because I was afraid of my uncle.

Not because of the threat.

But because of the one thing I had spent three years trying not to think about.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who always told me, “The truth doesn’t become less painful just because you ignore it.””

And now everyone was telling me he had known something.

Something important.

Something he never told me.

“Where is it?””

My voice sounded different.

Even to me.

Marcus looked at Lena.

Neither of them answered.

That made my heart race.

“Where is the recording?””

Lena looked down.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Not another secret.””

My eyes moved between them.

“I’m done being the only person in the room who doesn’t know what’s happening.””

Marcus sighed.

“It’s not that simple.””

I laughed.

“Of course it isn’t.””

Everything with Marcus had become complicated.

Every answer had another question hiding behind it.

Every truth came with a locked door.

“Where is my father’s recording?””

Lena took a breath.

“Your father gave it to someone he trusted.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

I almost laughed.

“My mother doesn’t even know about this.””

Lena looked at me carefully.

“She does.””

The room became silent.

I felt my chest tighten.

“No.””

“Nia…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My mother would have told me.””

Lena looked sad.

“She wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“Because your father asked her not to.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Your father was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of what would happen if Daniel found out the recording existed.””

I stared at them.

“My father was afraid of my uncle?””

Lena nodded.

“Daniel wasn’t just your father’s brother.””

She paused.

“He was his business partner.””

I closed my eyes.

Another connection.

Another hidden piece.

How many things had existed around me that I never knew about?

“So my father and Daniel worked together?””

“Yes.””

“And the company?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father helped Daniel build it.””

I looked at the papers again.

The documents.

The names.

The dates.

Suddenly everything felt connected.

“My father wasn’t involved because he stole money.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“He was involved because he discovered someone else had.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

Marcus nodded.

My phone was still in my hand.

The call with Daniel had ended minutes ago.

But his voice stayed in my head.

*Your father didn’t die without knowing the truth.*

I swallowed.

“How did my father die?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at them.

“Why are you all looking at each other like that?””

Lena’s face changed.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

My voice became quieter.

“You think I can’t handle it.””

Nobody spoke.

“That’s the problem with all of you.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You decided what I should know.””

Then Lena.

“You decided what I could survive.””

Then I looked at the empty space between them.

“And nobody asked me.””

A tear slipped down Lena’s cheek.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I looked at her.

“Everyone says that.””

My voice cracked.

“But protection without honesty is just another kind of control.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

A few minutes later, my mother answered the phone on the first ring.

“Nia?””

Her voice sounded nervous.

Like she already knew why I was calling.

“Mom.””

There was silence.

“I need to ask you something.””

Another pause.

“Okay.””

“Did Dad leave a recording?””

The silence that followed was worse than any answer.

My mother stopped breathing.

I heard it.

“Mom?””

“Nia…”

Her voice broke.

“Who told you?””

I closed my eyes.

So it was true.

“You knew.””

She started crying softly.

“I didn’t want you involved.””

I felt my anger rising.

“Mom.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I sat down.

“Please don’t apologize before explaining.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Your father recorded a conversation with Daniel two weeks before he passed away.””

I felt cold.

“What conversation?””

“About the money.””

I looked at Marcus.

He was watching me carefully.

“What did Dad say?””

My mother cried quietly.

“He said Daniel had been moving money for years.””

I covered my mouth.

“And?””

“He said he was going to expose him.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why didn’t he?””

My mother went silent.

The answer came slowly.

“Because he died before he could.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the floor.

My father.

Dead.

A secret.

A recording.

My uncle.

Everything was suddenly connected.

But one thing still bothered me.

“How did Daniel know?””

My mother didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“Because someone told him.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Marcus.””

I looked up.

The entire room stopped.

Marcus’s face went pale.

“No.””

My mother continued.

“I don’t know the details. Your father never told me everything. But he said someone close to him warned Daniel.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

I couldn’t hear anything else.

Because I was looking at my husband.

And for the first time…

I wondered if Lena had been right.

“Marcus.””

He immediately shook his head.

“Nia, no.””

“Did you tell Daniel?””

“No.””

“Did you?””

His voice became desperate.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Then why would my mother say that?””

He looked devastated.

“I don’t know.””

Lena stepped forward.

“Nia, wait.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at Marcus.

“Tell her.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What?””

“Tell her what happened that night.””

My heart started pounding.

“What night?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Marcus.

“What night?””

He closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“The night your father died.””

I felt like the room disappeared.

“You were there?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Yes.””

My mouth went dry.

“You never told me that.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because your father asked me not to tell you.””

I stared.

“Why would my father ask you to keep that from me?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

And I knew.

I knew there was something else.

Something bigger.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus looked at Lena.

Then back at me.

“I went to your father’s house.””

“Why?””

“Because he called me.””

My heart raced.

“What did he say?””

Marcus swallowed.

“He told me he found the proof.””

“Proof of what?””

His voice dropped.

“Proof that Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

The lights above us hummed.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus said the sentence that changed everything.

“Your father said the person helping Daniel…”

May you like

He looked at me.

“…was someone inside your family.””
