Chapter 4: The Sister Who Knew Too Much

For a few seconds after Evelyn said those words, I couldn’t understand the sentence.

Not because I didn’t hear her.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

My sister.

The woman contacting Marcus was my sister.

I stared through the windshield of my car, watching strangers walk past the coffee shop like my entire world hadn’t just shifted.

“No.””

The word came out before I even thought about it.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“That’s not possible.””

Evelyn’s voice was quiet.

“I wish it wasn’t.””

I closed my eyes.

My sister.

Lena.

The person who had stood beside me on my wedding day.

The person who held my hand when I cried after losing my father.

The person who knew every detail about my marriage.

Every weakness.

Every argument.

Every private moment.

“No,” I whispered again.

Evelyn sighed.

“I found old messages on Marcus’s laptop.””

My heart sank.

“What messages?””

There was silence.

Then she answered.

“Between him and Lena.””

The world suddenly felt too quiet.

I heard the hum of cars outside.

The sound of people laughing near the coffee shop entrance.

The music playing softly from the speakers.

Everything normal.

Everything continuing.

While I sat there feeling like someone had taken seven years of my life and rearranged every memory.

“How long?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Nia…”

“How long?””

Her voice broke.

“I don’t know.””

I looked down at my wedding ring.

The small diamond that Marcus picked after saving money for months.

The ring I used to touch whenever I needed to remind myself I was loved.

Now it felt heavier.

“I’m coming back.””

I hung up.

The drive back to the salon felt longer than it should have.

My mind kept replaying moments I had ignored.

Lena saying Marcus was “like a brother.””

Lena always knowing when Marcus was stressed.

Lena defending him whenever we argued.

“You’re lucky, Nia,” she once told me.

“He really loves you.””

At the time, I thought she was complimenting my marriage.

Now I wondered what she was really saying.

When I arrived, the salon was almost empty.

The customers had left.

The music was off.

The bright, beautiful place suddenly looked cold.

Marcus was sitting in one of the waiting chairs.

His elbows rested on his knees.

He looked older.

Not innocent.

Not broken.

Just tired.

He stood when he saw me.

“Nia.””

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

I looked at him.

“Did you sleep with my sister?””

His face changed instantly.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Pain.

And that was all I needed.

Because if the answer was no, his reaction would have been different.

“Nia…”

I stepped back.

“Answer me.””

He looked down.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

My eyes burned.

“That wasn’t my question.””

He swallowed.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“No?””

“No.””

His voice was stronger now.

“I never slept with Lena.””

I searched his face.

For a lie.

For anything.

But then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“But something happened.””

There it was.

The sentence that always came before disaster.

“What happened?””

Marcus sat back down.

“I need you to understand the timeline.””

I laughed softly.

“The timeline?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Because you think this started recently.””

I said nothing.

“It didn’t.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then when did it start?””

He looked toward the salon mirrors.

“Before we got married.””

My stomach tightened.

“You already said that.””

“I know.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“But I never told you the whole story.””

I looked away.

Of course he didn’t.

Apparently, the whole story was something everyone else received except me.

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Lena and I met before you introduced us.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She worked at the company where I was an intern.””

I stared at him.

“You knew my sister before I introduced you?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked ashamed.

“She didn’t tell me she was your sister.””

The room spun slightly.

“When did you find out?””

“The night you introduced us.””

I stared at him.

“The night of my birthday dinner?””

He nodded.

“And you said nothing?””

Marcus looked away.

“I thought it would be strange.””

“Strange?””

I almost laughed.

“My husband knowing my sister before our relationship even started is more than strange.””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You could have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I narrowed my eyes.

“Afraid of what?””

He didn’t respond.

That silence told me there was more.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“She told me she had feelings for me.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My own sister.

Feelings.

For my husband.

Before he was even my husband.

“What did you say?””

“I told her no.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

The confidence in his voice almost convinced me.

Almost.

Then I remembered the messages.

The fake name.

The lies.

“The messages didn’t sound like someone who accepted no.””

Marcus looked down.

“Because years later, she came back.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

I froze.

Six months.

That was when he started changing.

That was when the late nights began.

That was when he stopped leaving his phone unlocked.

“What happened six months ago?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Nia…”

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“She contacted me.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed help.””

“With what?””

“She was in trouble.””

I shook my head.

“So you helped her?””

“Yes.””

“And hid it from me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I knew you would hate that she was back in my life.””

I stared at him.

“You’re right.””

He looked down.

“I would have.””

A silence fell between us.

Then I asked the question I was afraid to ask.

“Did you love her?””

Marcus looked up immediately.

“No.””

The answer was instant.

“I loved you.””

I wanted to believe that.

God, I wanted to.

But love without honesty starts feeling like a beautiful house with a cracked foundation.

It might still look perfect.

Until everything collapses.

A sound came from the back of the salon.

We both turned.

Simone stood there.

I had forgotten she was still there.

She looked nervous.

“Nia…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“I need to tell you something.””

Marcus stood.

“Simone, don’t.””

She ignored him.

“I wasn’t the woman texting him.””

I stared.

“But you knew.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Because Lena came to the salon.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

Simone looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“She asked me to help her.””

“With what?””

Simone took a deep breath.

“She wanted me to make it look like Marcus was having an affair with me.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Marcus.

“What?””

He looked horrified.

“I didn’t know about that.””

Simone nodded.

“He didn’t.””

I stared at her.

“Why would she want that?””

Simone looked down.

“Because she said if Marcus’s marriage fell apart…”

She paused.

“…he would finally be free.””

My heart dropped.

Not because Lena wanted my husband.

Because suddenly, I understood something much worse.

This wasn’t a secret affair.

It was a plan.

A plan that had been happening around me.

Without me.

I looked at Marcus.

“Where is she?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Marcus.””

His phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone looked at the screen.

A new message appeared.

From Lena.

*I know Nia found out.*

My breath caught.

Then another message appeared.

*Now she gets to hear the truth about why I came back.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the final message arrived.

*Because I’m not trying to take her husband. I’m trying to expose what he did.*
