Chapter 1: The Girl Behind the Wall

“Daddy?””

The little girl’s voice was so faint I almost convinced myself I had imagined it.

She was sitting on the cold floor behind my daughter’s closet wall, her knees pulled tightly against her chest. Her tangled brown hair hung over a pale, tear-streaked face. She looked about six years old.

And on the left side of her neck, just beneath her ear, was a small, crescent-shaped birthmark.

I had the exact same birthmark.

Behind me, my wife was screaming.

“Ryan, don't touch her! Please! You don't understand!””

But I couldn't look away from the child.

My name is Ryan Mitchell. I'm thirty-eight years old, married to Vanessa, and the father of a four-year-old girl named Lily. We lived in a beautiful two-story house in a quiet neighborhood outside Charlotte, North Carolina.

From the outside, we looked like the kind of family people envied.

Vanessa was elegant, successful, and always perfectly dressed. I owned a construction consulting company, and we had enough money to give Lily everything she wanted.

Or so I thought.

For the past three weeks, strange noises had been coming from inside our bedroom walls.

At first, I blamed the plumbing.

Then I thought it might be mice.

But Lily kept telling us something that made Vanessa increasingly uncomfortable.

“There’s a little girl in my closet, Daddy.””

The first time she said it, I laughed.

I was sitting on her pink bedroom rug, helping her build a tower of wooden blocks.

“A little girl?”” I asked.

“What's her name?””

Lily placed a yellow block on top of the tower.

“Emma.””

“Is Emma your friend from preschool?””

She shook her head.

“No. She lives in the wall.””

I chuckled.

“That's impossible, sweetheart.””

Lily looked at me with an expression that didn't belong on a four-year-old's face.

“She's hungry.””

I stopped stacking blocks.

“What do you mean?””

“She asks me for bread.””

Before I could ask another question, Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

“Lily, stop making up stories.””

Her voice was sharper than necessary.

Lily immediately lowered her eyes.

I looked at my wife.

“She's just playing.””

“Then she needs to find something else to play with,” Vanessa replied.

She crossed the room, took Lily's hand, and led her toward the bathroom.

That evening, I noticed Vanessa checking Lily's closet.

She moved the dresses aside, pushed against the back wall, and examined the wooden panels.

When she realized I was watching, she quickly shut the closet door.

“What are you doing?”” I asked.

“Looking for a missing shoe.””

“You were checking the wall.””

She smiled, but her fingers were trembling.

“Ryan, you're working too much. You're starting to imagine things.””

I let it go.

I shouldn't have.

The following morning, I discovered a small piece of bread underneath Lily's bed.

There were tiny fingerprints on it.

I asked Lily about it.

She looked toward her closet.

“Emma wanted breakfast.””

I felt a strange chill move through my body.

“Sweetheart, where did you give it to her?””

Lily pointed at the closet.

“Her little door.””

Vanessa, who was pouring coffee at the kitchen counter, dropped the ceramic cup.

It shattered against the floor.

“Vanessa!”” I exclaimed.

She stared at Lily.

Then she forced a laugh.

“I'm so clumsy today.””

But her face had gone completely white.

Over the next several days, I began paying closer attention.

I heard scratching behind the bedroom walls around midnight.

Sometimes there were soft footsteps.

Once, while Vanessa was taking a shower, I heard what sounded like a little girl humming.

The sound came from Lily's closet.

When I opened it, everything looked normal.

But I noticed something strange.

The bottom wooden panel was slightly loose.

I pressed against it.

Something shifted behind the wall.

Before I could investigate further, Vanessa came out of the bathroom.

“What are you doing?””

“There's something behind here.””

“It's insulation.””

“Then why does it move?””

She grabbed my wrist.

“Ryan, leave it alone.””

I stared at her.

“Why are you so afraid of a closet?””

She released me and stepped backward.

“Because you're turning a child's imagination into some ridiculous obsession.””

That night, I couldn't sleep.

At approximately two in the morning, I heard a faint tapping sound.

Three knocks.

Then silence.

Three more knocks.

I climbed out of bed and walked toward Lily's room.

The house was dark except for the soft night-light beside her bed.

Lily was sleeping.

But her closet door was open.

I approached it quietly.

Then I heard a whisper.

“Please...””

I froze.

It came from behind the wooden panel.

“Please don't tell her.””

My blood ran cold.

I returned to bed without waking Vanessa.

The next afternoon, I came home early from a meeting.

I found Lily standing in front of her closet with a piece of bread in her little hand.

She was carefully pushing it through a narrow opening between two wooden panels.

“Lily?””

She jumped.

“Daddy!””

I knelt beside her.

“What are you doing?””

She looked frightened.

“Emma hasn't eaten today.””

I examined the opening.

It was too wide to be a normal gap.

I pressed my fingers against the panel and felt it move.

“Sweetheart, step away for a minute.””

I pulled.

The wooden piece shifted outward with a dry scraping sound.

Behind it was a narrow, dark space.

Not insulation.

Not pipes.

A passage.

And inside that passage, someone was breathing.

I reached for my phone and switched on its flashlight.

A small figure flinched.

“Oh my God.””

A little girl was sitting against the far wall.

She wore an oversized gray sweater and dirty leggings. Her bare feet were covered in dust. Her arms were painfully thin.

She looked up.

Her eyes were the same unusual shade of hazel as mine.

I slowly extended my hand.

“Hey, sweetheart. It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you.””

She stared at me.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered the word that shattered everything I believed about my family.

“Daddy?””

I couldn't breathe.

Behind me, Vanessa screamed.

“DON'T TOUCH HER, RYAN!””

I turned.

My wife stood in the doorway, her hands pressed against her mouth.

She looked as though she had just seen a ghost.

“Vanessa,” I said slowly.

“Who is this child?””

She shook her head violently.

“Close the wall.””

“What?””

“CLOSE IT!””

I looked back at the little girl.

She was crying now.

“Daddy, please don't let her take me away again.””

I felt something tighten inside my chest.

“Who takes you away?””

Before she could answer, she reached for my hand.

Her sleeve slipped down.

And there it was.

A crescent-shaped birthmark on her left wrist.

The same mark I had.

I pulled back my own sleeve.

Identical.

My wife made a strangled sound.

Then her knees buckled.

She collapsed onto the bedroom floor, sobbing.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

“I'm so sorry.””

I stared at her.

“Sorry for what?””

A heavy footstep echoed from somewhere behind the hidden passage.

Then another.

The little girl immediately scrambled toward me.

“No! He's coming!””

I turned toward the darkness.

A tall silhouette appeared at the far end of the passage.

The man stepped into the flashlight beam.

He was holding an old photograph.

My photograph.

It showed me standing beside Vanessa at our wedding, smiling beneath a white flower arch.

But there was something written on the back.

The stranger looked directly at me.

“Ryan Mitchell,” he said quietly.

“You finally found your daughter.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was shaking her head, crying harder than before.

May you like

The stranger lifted the photograph.

“And now,” he continued, “I think it's time you learned what your wife did to your first child.””
