Chapter 9: The Daughter I Never Knew Existed

I stared at Vanessa.

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what she had said.

“Your daughter?””

She nodded.

“Sophie is my daughter.””

I looked down at the letter again.

My father's handwriting was unmistakable.

He had written that Sophie was his daughter.

Vanessa looked at me through her tears.

“Ryan, there's something you need to understand.””

I shook my head.

“No. I'm done hearing half-truths.””

She wiped her face.

“Sophie was born before I met you.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

“February 2018.””

I tried to remember where I had been in February 2018.

I had been living alone in an apartment in Charlotte. I had just started my consulting business. I had barely known Vanessa.

“How could my father be her father?””

Vanessa looked toward the officers.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

“No.””

She lowered her head.

“Then I'll tell you here.””

The blue room was almost empty now.

Police officers were escorting the security men upstairs. David was speaking with investigators, while Lily and Emma sat together on the sofa.

Caleb was holding his stuffed dog.

I stood in front of Vanessa.

“Tell me everything.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Before I met you, I worked for your father's company. I was twenty-four. I had just left a difficult relationship and needed a job.””

I remembered her mentioning that she had worked in administration.

She had never told me she had worked directly for my father.

“One night, your father asked me to stay late. He was upset about a business dispute. We talked for hours.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Are you saying you had an affair with my father?””

Vanessa nodded.

The words seemed to echo through the room.

“Was Sophie born from that relationship?””

“Yes.””

I stepped backward.

My father had betrayed my mother.

My wife had been his daughter before she became mine.

The family history I thought I understood was becoming something unrecognizable.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father asked me not to.””

“That's not an answer.””

“He said Margaret would take Sophie if she found out. He had already seen what she was doing with the other children.””

I stared at her.

“So you hid your daughter?””

“Yes.””

“And then you married me?””

Vanessa began crying again.

“I didn't know who you were at first. I was assigned to help organize the company's charity accounts. When I realized you were Robert's son, I tried to leave.””

“But you didn't.””

“No.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I fell in love with you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that as if it fixes something.””

“It doesn't.””

“Did you ever intend to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

I shook my head.

“Exactly.””

Vanessa reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

“Don't.””

She lowered her arm.

“I know you hate me.””

“I don't know what I feel.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

I looked at the letter.

“Where is Sophie?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“She's safe.””

“Where?””

“Not with Margaret.””

“Then who has her?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Sarah.””

I stared at her.

“Sarah is alive?””

“Yes.””

“And Sophie is with her?””

Vanessa nodded.

I felt my knees weaken.

My sister was alive.

My wife had another daughter.

My father had secretly fathered a child with my wife.

And somehow, all of them had been connected for years without my knowledge.

I looked at David.

“Did you know about Sophie?””

He shook his head.

“Your father never told me.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“How did Sarah survive?””

Vanessa sat down.

“After your father died, Margaret arranged for Sarah to be transferred to a private medical facility. She wanted everyone to believe Sarah had died in the accident. But Sarah had already hidden Emma with someone she trusted.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.

“Your father's housekeeper.””

I remembered Mrs. Eleanor.

She had worked for my parents for almost twenty years. She had left shortly after my father's death, supposedly to care for her sick husband.

“Eleanor?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She helped Sarah escape. She took Emma to a temporary safe house and later brought her to this property when Margaret discovered the arrangement.””

I looked at Emma.

“That's why she was living in the wall?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Margaret had people searching for her. The hidden passage was the only place she couldn't easily access without alerting your father’s old security system.””

I looked toward the closet passage in my mind.

It was difficult to believe that a child had spent years surviving on bread passed through a wooden panel.

“Why didn't Eleanor contact me?””

“Your father had instructed her not to. He believed Margaret would use you to locate Emma.””

I looked at the letter again.

There was another paragraph beneath the section about Sophie.

Your mother will tell you that Vanessa is responsible for everything. Vanessa made terrible decisions, but she was not the person who ordered the operation.

I read it twice.

My father had known about Vanessa's involvement.

But he hadn't blamed her for everything.

I looked at my wife.

“Did you know my father wrote this?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He gave me a copy before he died.””

“Why didn't you show me?””

“Because I was afraid you would leave.””

I stared at her.

“You let me believe my sister was dead. You hid my daughter. You helped my mother conceal children. You lied about my father.””

Her face crumpled.

“I know.””

“And you thought I would stay if you kept lying?””

She whispered.

“I thought if I could keep everyone alive long enough, I could fix it.””

I looked away.

There was nothing left to say.

Then Lily stood up.

“Daddy?””

I crouched.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She pointed toward the photograph.

“Is that Grandma Sarah?””

I looked at the picture of my sister holding baby Emma.

“Yes.””

“Can we see her?””

My throat tightened.

“I'm going to try.””

Emma stepped closer.

“Can I see Mommy Sarah too?””

I nodded.

“Of course.””

David approached with his phone.

“Ryan, there's something you need to see.””

He showed me a photograph.

It had been recovered from the hidden camera system.

The image showed a woman sitting inside a small apartment.

Sarah.

She looked older, but her eyes were unmistakable.

Beside her sat a teenage girl.

She had long dark hair, a small crescent birthmark on her neck, and the same hazel eyes as Emma.

I stared at her.

“Sophie?””

David nodded.

“The investigators traced the photograph to a safe house registered under Eleanor's name.””

“When was it taken?””

“Yesterday.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She nodded through her tears.

“That's her.””

I studied the girl's face.

She looked about fifteen.

I had missed her entire childhood.

My father's secret daughter.

My wife's first daughter.

My niece, in one sense.

My half-sister, in another.

And now, somehow, part of my own family.

I didn't know what to call her.

I only knew that she deserved the truth.

“Where is the apartment?””

David gave me the address.

Before I could move, an officer approached.

“Mr. Mitchell, we have an update.””

I turned.

“Did you find Margaret?””

The officer nodded.

“She has been taken into custody.””

“And the children?””

“They're safe.””

I exhaled.

For the first time in hours, I felt as though I could breathe.

Then the officer continued.

“However, there's a complication.””

“What complication?””

“Your mother has requested an emergency meeting with you. She says she will only identify the person who helped her conceal the children if you agree to hear her privately.””

I stared at him.

“Why would I agree to that?””

The officer lowered his voice.

“Because she claims the person is still at large and has access to your home.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

The officer looked at Vanessa.

“She says it's someone who has been living with you.””

I turned slowly toward my wife.

Vanessa's face went completely white.

“Ryan,” she whispered.

I took a step toward her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“Don't believe her.””

I felt a familiar coldness spreading through my chest.

“Who is my mother accusing?””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

Then she whispered:

“Eleanor.””

I stared at her.

“Mrs. Eleanor? The woman who helped save Emma?””

Vanessa nodded.

“But she's dead.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She died six months ago.””

The officer looked at his paperwork.

Then he shook his head.

“That's not what our records show.””

He turned the screen toward me.

A recent photograph appeared.

It showed Eleanor standing outside the safe house.

She was holding a folder.

And beside her stood Sarah.

I felt my stomach drop.

The officer pointed to the photograph.

“Mr. Mitchell, this woman checked into the safe house yesterday.””

I stared at the image.

It wasn't Eleanor.

It was someone who looked almost exactly like her.

The officer enlarged the photograph.

Then I noticed the small detail that made my blood run cold.

The woman had the same crescent birthmark on her neck as Emma.

She looked at least seventy years old.

And beneath the photograph was a name.

Eleanor Mitchell.

I stared at the screen.

“That's impossible.””

The officer lowered his voice.

“There's something else.””

He opened another file.

It contained a birth certificate.

The name of the mother was Eleanor Mitchell.

The name of the father was Robert Mitchell.

And the child's name was Sarah Mitchell.

I looked at the photograph again.

Then at Vanessa.

“Who is Eleanor?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“She isn't the housekeeper.””

I felt the room spin.

“Then who is she?””

Vanessa whispered the answer.

“Your father's first wife.””

I couldn't move.

My father had been married before my mother.

And the woman I had known as Eleanor had been connected to the family long before Margaret ever entered it.

The officer closed the file.

“Mr. Mitchell, we believe Eleanor may be the only person who knows where the remaining children were taken.””

I looked toward the girls.

Then at the photograph of Sarah and Sophie.

My family had been built on secrets.

And every time I thought I had reached the bottom, another hidden room appeared.

I took the officer's phone.

“Where is she now?””

He pointed toward the address.

“She's waiting for you.””

I stared at the photograph one final time.

May you like

Then I noticed a handwritten message on the back.

Ryan, come alone. Your father left something for you that Margaret never found.
