Chapter 8: The Boy Who Witnessed My Father's Murder

The little boy looked no older than nine.

His clothes were clean, but his face was pale. He sat on the edge of a narrow bed, holding a small stuffed dog.

Behind him, the hidden room extended farther into darkness.

I stared at him.

“What's your name?””

“Caleb.””

“Are you hurt?””

He shook his head.

Then he looked toward Margaret.

“She told me not to talk to you.””

My mother immediately stepped forward.

“Caleb, come here.””

The boy shrank against the wall.

“No.””

Margaret's face hardened.

“Don't make this difficult.””

Caleb tightened his grip on the stuffed dog.

“You said you were going to send me away.””

I felt my stomach turn.

I stepped between them.

“Stay away from him.””

Margaret looked at me with open contempt.

“You're becoming very troublesome, Ryan.””

“Good.””

Behind me, Lily and Emma were crying.

David had managed to restrain one of the security men, while the other was lying on the floor.

Vanessa stood beside the desk, holding her cheek.

Police officers were approaching through the chapel corridor.

Margaret glanced toward the entrance.

Then she looked at Caleb.

“Tell him nothing.””

The boy shook his head.

“I heard everything.””

I crouched in front of him.

“What did you hear?””

Caleb looked at my face.

“Your dad was here the night he died.””

My throat tightened.

“What happened?””

He looked toward the ceiling, as if checking whether someone might be listening.

“Grandma Margaret brought him here.””

I turned toward my mother.

“Is that true?””

She didn't answer.

Caleb continued.

“Your dad was angry. He kept asking where the little girl was.””

“Emma?””

The boy nodded.

“He said she belonged with her daddy.””

I looked at Emma.

She was holding Lily's hand.

Caleb swallowed.

“Then another man came.””

I felt a chill.

“What man?””

“He had a black jacket and a silver watch.””

My mother closed her eyes.

Caleb continued.

“Your dad tried to leave. But the man pushed him.””

“Where?””

“Down the stairs.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Did he die?””

Caleb looked down.

“I don't know. But Grandma said he had to disappear before anyone found out.””

Margaret suddenly rushed toward him.

“Enough!””

I caught her arm.

“Don't you dare touch him.””

She struggled.

“You have no idea what that boy saw!””

“Then tell me.””

She stopped fighting.

Her eyes met mine.

“You want the truth? Fine. Your father was not murdered because he discovered the children.””

I stared at her.

“Then why?””

“Because he was going to hand over the family company.””

“To whom?””

Margaret laughed.

“To the children.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He had created a trust. He wanted every asset transferred to the children whose lives we had been managing. He wanted to expose the entire arrangement and give them the money.””

David stepped forward.

“Your father wanted to compensate the families who had been harmed.””

Margaret turned toward him.

“He wanted to bankrupt us!””

I looked at her.

“So you killed him over money?””

Her expression hardened.

“Over everything he was about to destroy.””

I could barely process what she was saying.

My father had been preparing to expose the operation.

My mother had stopped him.

And Vanessa had helped her find Sarah.

But there was still something missing.

I looked at Caleb.

“Who was the man with the silver watch?””

The boy looked toward Vanessa.

She had gone completely pale.

Then he pointed at her.

“Her.””

I turned.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Caleb nodded.

“She was wearing a black jacket that night. She came with the man.””

I stared at my wife.

“Were you there when my father died?””

She started crying.

“Ryan, please.””

“Answer me!””

“Yes.””

The word seemed to empty the room.

I took a step backward.

“You were there?””

Vanessa nodded.

“But I didn't kill him.””

Caleb spoke again.

“She gave him the medicine.””

Vanessa screamed.

“STOP!””

The boy flinched.

I turned toward her.

“What medicine?””

She covered her face.

“I didn't know what it was.””

My voice dropped.

“What did you give my father?””

Vanessa looked at Margaret.

My mother remained silent.

Then Vanessa whispered.

“Something to make him sleep.””

David approached her.

“Who gave it to you?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Margaret.””

I felt sick.

“You drugged my father?””

“He was threatening to call the police. Your mother told me he needed to calm down.””

“And then?””

Vanessa started sobbing.

“He fell. I swear I didn't know he would die.””

Margaret laughed.

It was a cold, sharp sound.

“Don't pretend you were innocent. You knew exactly what you were doing.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You told me it was harmless!””

“And you believed me?””

I stepped toward Margaret.

“What happened after he fell?””

She looked at me.

“He struck his head. He was already unconscious. I decided not to call for help.””

The room went silent.

My father had died because my mother chose to let him die.

I felt something inside me collapse.

“You left him there?””

Margaret looked away.

“He was already gone.””

“You didn't even try to save him?””

“He was going to destroy us!””

I stared at the woman who had raised me.

The woman who had taught me to ride a bicycle.

The woman who had sat beside me at my sister's funeral.

I suddenly realized that I had spent twelve years grieving two people while the person responsible had been sitting at my dinner table.

Police officers entered the blue room.

“Everyone, step away from the children!””

Margaret immediately changed her expression.

She raised both hands.

“Thank God you're here. These people have been threatening me.””

One officer approached her.

“Margaret Mitchell?””

“Yes.””

“You're being detained while we investigate allegations of child abduction, unlawful confinement, and evidence tampering.””

She laughed.

“You cannot arrest me based on the word of a child.””

Caleb stood up.

“I saw you.””

The officer looked at him.

“Son, are you okay?””

Caleb nodded.

“I saw what you did to Ryan's dad.””

Margaret's face changed.

The officer approached her again.

“Ma'am, turn around.””

For a moment, I thought it was over.

Then Margaret looked directly at Vanessa.

“You have one chance to fix this.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Margaret's voice became almost gentle.

“Remember what we agreed.””

Vanessa looked toward me.

Then she did something I never expected.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small silver recording device.

“I recorded everything,” she said.

Margaret froze.

Vanessa held it up.

“Every conversation. Every threat. Every instruction.””

My mother stared at her.

“You wouldn't dare.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I should have done this years ago.””

She handed the device to the officer.

Margaret suddenly lunged.

One officer caught her before she reached Vanessa.

The other placed handcuffs around her wrists.

My mother screamed.

“You ungrateful little liar!””

Vanessa collapsed onto the floor.

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

She covered her face.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And because I knew I had done something unforgivable.””

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me did.

But I couldn't forget that she had also been responsible for hiding Emma in a wall and lying to Lily.

I turned away.

An officer approached me.

“Mr. Mitchell, we need you to identify the children and provide statements.””

I nodded.

Then Caleb grabbed my sleeve.

“There's one more thing.””

I crouched.

“What is it?””

He looked toward the far end of the hidden room.

“Your dad told me to give you something if you ever came back.””

He reached beneath his mattress and pulled out a small wooden box.

It was dark, scratched, and covered in dust.

I recognized the initials carved into the lid.

R.M.

My father's initials.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of my father holding Emma as a newborn.

Beneath it was a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it with trembling hands.

Ryan,

There is something I could never tell you while I was alive.

Emma is not the only child I saved.

You have another daughter.

I stopped reading.

Another daughter?

I looked at David.

He seemed just as shocked.

I continued.

Her name is Sophie. She was born from a relationship I kept secret because I believed revealing it would put her life in danger.

Margaret knows where she is.

And she has spent years making sure Sophie never learns who her father really was.

I lowered the letter.

My father had another daughter.

My sister had another child hidden from me.

And my mother had known all along.

I turned toward Margaret.

She was being escorted out of the blue room.

“Where is Sophie?””

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Where is my sister's daughter?””

Margaret looked over her shoulder.

Then she smiled.

“You're asking the wrong question, Ryan.””

“What does that mean?””

She leaned toward me.

“Ask Vanessa why Sophie has your birthmark.””

My heart stopped.

I turned toward my wife.

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

Then she whispered something I could barely hear.

“Because Sophie isn't your sister's daughter.””

I felt the room spin.

“Then whose daughter is she?””

May you like

Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

“Mine.””
