Chapter 2: The Photograph My Wife Tried to Hide
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stood between the little girl and the stranger, trying to understand what I had just heard.
My first child?
I had never been told I had another daughter.
I had never been married before Vanessa. I had no memories of another woman carrying my child. No photographs, no birth certificate, no hospital records.
At least, none that I knew about.
“Who are you?”” I demanded.
The man didn't answer immediately.
He looked down at the little girl.
“Emma, sweetheart. Come here.””
The child grabbed my jeans.
“No!””
Her tiny fingers dug into the fabric.
“Don't make me go with him, Daddy.””
The stranger's expression changed.
“I'm not going to hurt you.””
Emma shook her head.
“You said that last time.””
Vanessa let out a sob.
I turned toward her.
“What does she mean by last time?””
My wife crawled backward across the floor.
“Ryan, please. We need to talk privately.””
“Privately?””
I pointed toward the child.
“There is a little girl hiding inside our walls, Vanessa! She knows my name, she has my birthmark, and she's calling me her father. What exactly do you think we need to discuss privately?””
The stranger finally stepped forward.
“My name is David Collins. I was your father's attorney.””
My father's name was Robert Mitchell.
He had died eleven years earlier.
I remembered David.
He had attended the funeral and helped settle my father's estate. I hadn't seen him since.
“What are you doing in my house?”” I asked.
David glanced at Vanessa.
“Ask your wife why she kept the original floor plans.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“Don't listen to him!””
David reached into his coat and pulled out a folded document.
“This house was built over an old service corridor. Your father designed it that way.””
I frowned.
“What corridor?””
David unfolded the paper.
It was an architectural drawing of our house.
A narrow passage ran behind the master bedroom, through Lily's closet, and down toward the basement.
Several rooms were marked along the passage.
One had a handwritten label.
EMERGENCY FAMILY ROOM.
I stared at the drawing.
“Why would my father build something like this?””
David's face hardened.
“Because he knew someone might need protection.””
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the paper.
“Give it to me!””
David stepped away.
“Enough, Vanessa.””
My wife stopped.
The way he said her name made me realize something.
They knew each other.
Not casually.
Not as strangers.
I looked between them.
“You two have met before.””
Neither answered.
Then Emma tugged my sleeve.
“Daddy?””
I crouched.
“I'm here.””
She pointed toward Vanessa.
“She said you weren't coming back.””
My throat tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Emma swallowed.
“She told me you were dead.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I slowly stood.
“Vanessa, what is this child talking about?””
My wife pressed both hands against her chest.
“She doesn't understand.””
Emma shook her head.
“I do understand. You said Daddy had another family and didn't want me.””
I felt a wave of nausea.
David lowered the photograph onto the floor.
“Ryan, I need you to look at something.””
He turned it over.
On the back, in faded blue ink, were three lines.
Ryan, Vanessa, and their daughter, Emma.
Below the writing was a date.
June 14, 2019.
My wedding to Vanessa had taken place in September 2020.
I stared at the date.
“That can't be right.””
David nodded.
“Emma was born in March 2020.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.
“Were you pregnant before we got married?””
She lowered her head.
“Yes.””
“Was Emma your daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Was she mine?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word hit me harder than any physical blow.
I looked toward Emma.
She was watching me with an expression of desperate hope.
“Then why was she living behind my daughter's closet?””
Vanessa started crying again.
“I was protecting our family.””
I almost laughed.
There was nothing funny about what she had said.
“Protecting us from a child?””
David interrupted.
“Ryan, there is something else.””
He pulled a second photograph from his coat.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby in a hospital bed.
I recognized the woman immediately.
My sister.
Sarah.
She had died in a car accident twelve years earlier.
I stared at the photograph.
“What does my sister have to do with this?””
David placed it beside the first one.
“Your father left instructions that I was to deliver these photographs if Emma was ever found.””
I looked at the baby.
On her wrist was the same crescent birthmark.
But there was something written beneath the photograph.
Emma Mitchell. Biological parents: Ryan Mitchell and Sarah Mitchell.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
I looked at David.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the little girl.
“No,” I whispered.
David nodded slowly.
“Emma is your daughter. Sarah carried her for you.””
My mind struggled to process the sentence.
Sarah had been my younger sister.
She had died years before I met Vanessa.
I remembered the funeral. I remembered standing beside my father while the pastor spoke about how much Sarah had loved children.
But I had never heard anything about a baby.
“How?”” I demanded.
David lowered his voice.
“Your sister agreed to carry your biological child after you were told you couldn't have children naturally. The arrangement was private. Your father paid for the medical treatment and arranged everything legally.””
I shook my head.
“Why wasn't I told?””
“Because Sarah wanted to surprise you. She planned to tell you after the birth.””
I looked at Emma.
She had moved closer to me.
“Daddy, Mommy Sarah said you had a nice laugh.””
My eyes burned.
“Mommy Sarah?””
Emma nodded.
“She showed me your picture.””
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
“STOP TALKING TO HER!””
I turned toward my wife.
“Why?””
“Because she's confused!””
David stepped between us.
“No. She's been isolated for years. That's what happens when a child is hidden from the world.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You don't know what happened!””
“Then tell me,” I said.
She looked at me.
For a moment, I thought she might finally speak.
Instead, she rushed toward Emma.
“Come here. We're leaving.””
Emma screamed and grabbed my leg.
I blocked Vanessa with my arm.
“Don't touch her.””
My wife stared at me as if I had slapped her.
“You're choosing her over me?””
I looked down at the terrified child.
“She is a little girl who has been living inside a wall. I don't even know what you've done to her yet.””
Vanessa's face turned cold.
“You don't understand what she is.””
“What she is?””
She pointed at Emma.
“She's the reason your father destroyed everything!””
David reached into his coat again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
It was yellowed with age.
The front bore my father's handwriting.
To Ryan. Open only when Emma is found.
I took it with shaking fingers.
Inside was a letter and a small silver key.
The letter began:
My son, if you're reading this, then someone has finally brought Emma into the light. I wish I could have done it myself.
I continued reading.
Sarah's death was not the only tragedy our family suffered. There was another person who knew about Emma's birth, and that person had a reason to keep you separated.
I looked up.
“Who?””
David glanced toward the basement.
Before he could answer, a loud metallic bang echoed from below.
Emma began trembling.
“No,” she whispered.
I knelt beside her.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She pointed toward the floor.
“That's where he keeps the other pictures.””
I felt a chill crawl up my spine.
“What other pictures?””
Emma looked directly into my eyes.
“Pictures of the other children.””
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“What other children?””
May you like
She leaned closer and whispered something that made David turn completely pale.
“Daddy... I'm not the only one.””
