Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was Never Buried
Roberto stared at Clara.
The rain outside the chapel grew louder.
Every drop hitting the old wooden roof sounded like a countdown.
A countdown to the moment when his entire life would finally make sense.
Or fall apart completely.
“Elena was alive.””
Clara’s words remained between them.
Roberto wanted to reject them.
He wanted to say it was impossible.
He wanted to tell her she was lying.
But he couldn’t.
Because too many impossible things had become true in the last few days.
Mateo’s betrayal.
The hidden files.
The damaged brakes.
The missing evidence.
The recordings.
And now this.
His wife had survived.
“Where is she?””
His voice cracked.
Clara looked down.
That small movement told him everything.
She knew.
She knew where Elena was.
“Where is she?”” Roberto repeated.
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“Roberto…”
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“Do not say her name like you’re sorry.””
Clara swallowed.
“You deserve the truth.””
“I deserved it twelve years ago.””
The words hurt.
But Clara accepted them.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked toward the old chapel window.
“I thought about calling you thousands of times.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””
“Who?””
Clara looked at him.
“Mateo.””
Roberto’s jaw tightened.
“What did he do?””
“He threatened Sofía.””
The answer froze him.
“My daughter?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Clara took a shaky breath.
“After the accident, Mateo found out Elena was alive.””
Roberto closed his eyes.
The pain was almost physical.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“And he still let me believe she was dead?””
Clara looked away.
“Yes.””
Roberto turned away.
For a moment, he couldn’t look at her.
Because the betrayal was too large.
Not just from Mateo.
From everyone who knew.
Everyone who watched him mourn.
Everyone who let him stand beside an empty grave.
“Why didn’t Elena come back?””
Clara’s expression changed.
Because the answer hurt.
“She wanted to.””
“Then why?””
“Because she thought returning would put you and Sofía in more danger.””
Roberto shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does when you know who she was running from.””
“Who?””
Clara looked directly at him.
“The person who planned everything.””
Roberto waited.
But Clara didn’t speak.
“Who?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Your father.””
The world stopped.
Roberto stared.
“My father died eight years ago.””
“I know.””
“That’s impossible.””
“He wasn’t the person who carried out the plan.””
Clara stepped closer.
“But he was the person who started it.””
Roberto felt numb.
His father.
The man who built the foundation of Alvarez Holdings.
The man who taught him business.
The man who taught him loyalty.
A man Roberto had buried years ago.
“No.””
Clara’s eyes softened.
“I know what it feels like to hear something you don’t want to believe.””
Roberto looked at her.
“Don’t compare this to anything.””
“I’m not.””
She lowered her voice.
“I’m telling you because Elena wanted you to know.””
The name hurt.
“What did she know?””
Clara sat down on the old wooden bench.
“She discovered your father had been moving company money for years.””
Roberto frowned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed the company belonged to him.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
Clara looked at the floor.
“When you started expanding the company, investors loved you. Employees trusted you. The company became yours.””
Roberto listened.
“Your father hated losing control.””
A silence.
“He wanted you to fail.””
Roberto shook his head.
“My father loved me.””
Clara nodded sadly.
“I believe he did.””
The answer surprised him.
“But love and ambition can exist together.””
She looked at him.
“Sometimes people destroy the things they love because they cannot accept losing power over them.””
Roberto sat down slowly.
Everything he knew about his family was changing.
“My father hired Mateo?””
Clara nodded.
“Mateo was his chosen person.””
“Then why did Mateo betray him?””
“Because Mateo wanted more.””
Roberto looked at her.
“What happened the night of the accident?””
Clara closed her eyes.
“I was assigned to your family’s security.””
“I know.””
“I noticed Mateo meeting with your father several times.””
Roberto listened carefully.
“About a week before the crash, Elena discovered documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial transfers.””
“Between who?””
“Your father and several hidden companies.””
Roberto felt sick.
“And then?””
“Elena confronted him.””
Clara paused.
“She told him she would expose everything.””
“What did he do?””
“He tried to convince her to stay quiet.””
“And she refused.””
“Yes.””
Clara looked at him.
“She told him she would tell you.””
Roberto closed his eyes.
Of course.
Elena would have.
She always believed the truth mattered more than comfort.
“What happened next?””
Clara’s voice became quieter.
“Mateo was ordered to handle it.””
Roberto looked up.
“Ordered?””
“Yes.””
“By my father?””
Clara nodded.
“But Mateo changed the plan.””
“What do you mean?””
“He realized something.””
“What?””
“He realized if you died, he could control everything.””
Roberto felt a wave of anger.
“So he betrayed my father.””
“Yes.””
“And Elena?””
Clara looked down.
“She was never supposed to survive.””
“But she did.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Clara took a deep breath.
“Because I got to the car before they could take her.””
Roberto stared.
“You saved her.””
“I tried.””
“What does that mean?””
Clara’s eyes filled.
“She was badly injured.””
Roberto looked away.
“Did she know?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know I thought she was dead?””
Clara nodded.
“And?””
“She cried.””
The word broke him.
“What did she say?””
Clara wiped her face.
“She said, ‘Roberto will blame himself.’”
Roberto’s vision blurred.
Because Elena knew him.
Even while fighting for her life.
She was worried about him.
“She wanted to come home.””
A pause.
“But?””
“But Mateo found out.””
Roberto looked up.
“What did he do?””
“He made her disappear.””
“How?””
“He arranged a new identity.””
Roberto stood.
“Where is she?””
Clara looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
The answer made him angry.
“You don’t know?””
“I lost contact with her years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because she told me to.””
Roberto stared.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Clara’s voice broke.
“Because she received a message.””
“What message?””
Clara reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Roberto recognized the handwriting immediately.
Elena.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only a few lines.
*Roberto,*
*If you are reading this, it means the truth finally reached you.*
*I wanted to come home. Every single day, I wanted to come home.*
*But someone made me believe that returning would put Sofía in danger.*
*I watched from far away. I saw her grow. I saw you become both her father and her mother.*
*I know you think I abandoned you.*
*I didn’t.*
*I was protecting you.*
Roberto stopped reading.
His hands trembled.
Then he continued.
*The person who took me away is still watching your family.*
*And there is one thing you must know.*
*Sofía was never the reason I stayed away.*
*She was the reason I survived.*
Roberto’s eyes filled.
At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.
*Ask Sofía about the song. She will remember.*
Roberto looked up.
“The song?””
Clara nodded.
“I don’t know what it means.””
Before Roberto could answer, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, he answered immediately.
A voice spoke.
A voice he knew.
A voice that made Clara’s face turn pale.
“Roberto.””
He froze.
Because it wasn’t Mateo.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Adrian.
It was a voice from his past.
A voice he had not heard in twelve years.
A voice he had spent years believing was gone forever.
“Mommy?””
The word escaped his mouth before he realized it.
The line went silent.
Then Elena whispered:
“Roberto…”
A broken breath.
“I’m sorry.””
He closed his eyes.
Tears finally fell.
“Elena?””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“I don’t have much time.””
His heart raced.
“What happened?””
Her voice trembled.
“Mateo found out I contacted Clara.””
Roberto stood.
“Leave wherever you are.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Elena said the words that turned his fear into horror.
“Because Sofía is not the only person who survived that night.””
Roberto froze.
“What does that mean?””
Elena whispered:
“The person who caused the crash…”
May you like
A long silence.
“…was inside the car with us.””
