Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden Inside Her Memory

Roberto could not move.

For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

The only thing he could hear was Mateo’s voice repeating inside his head.

*She saw something.*

Sofía.

His daughter.

The little girl who had spent twelve years in darkness.

The little girl he had tried to protect from every danger in the world.

Had been carrying the most dangerous secret of all.

A memory.

A memory someone had spent years trying to erase.

“What do you mean she saw something?”” Roberto asked.

His voice sounded unfamiliar.

Cold.

Controlled.

Mateo looked at him.

“She was awake during the crash.””

Roberto shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“She was two years old.””

“Two years old doesn’t mean unaware.””

Roberto stared at him.

Mateo continued.

“People remember things differently when they’re children. They don’t always remember faces or names.””

He pointed toward Roberto.

“But they remember sounds.””

Roberto thought about Sofía.

The way she recognized footsteps.

The way she remembered voices.

The way she noticed breathing patterns.

“She remembered the voice,” Roberto whispered.

Mateo nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Then why didn’t you tell Roberto?””

Mateo looked down.

Because that was the question.

The question that had been waiting twelve years.

“I tried.””

Roberto’s expression hardened.

“When?””

“After the accident.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

Mateo looked at him.

“The night Elena died, I found evidence that someone had tampered with the car.””

Roberto’s eyes narrowed.

“You found evidence?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Mateo closed his eyes.

“I was scared.””

Roberto laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Mateo didn’t react.

“Because it was true.””

The room became quiet.

“I knew someone powerful was involved.””

“How powerful?””

Mateo looked around the storage room.

“Powerful enough to make evidence disappear.””

Roberto stared.

“You were my partner.””

“Yes.””

“You had resources.””

“Yes.””

“You had money.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Mateo’s face changed.

A flash of regret.

“Because I underestimated them.””

Roberto said nothing.

Mateo continued.

“I thought I could handle it alone.””

“And Elena died.””

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Mateo looked away.

“Yes.””

They left the storage facility after midnight.

Roberto barely spoke during the drive home.

His mind was trapped between two impossible truths.

Mateo had betrayed him.

But Mateo had also been afraid.

And somewhere between those two things was the answer.

The answer he needed.

When he arrived at the mansion, Sofía was awake.

Sitting in the living room.

Waiting.

Roberto stopped when he saw her.

“Sofía?””

She turned toward him.

“You’re back.””

“Yes.””

“Were you with Mateo?””

The question surprised him.

“How did you know?””

She touched the edge of her blanket.

“I heard his voice when he came here before.””

Roberto froze.

“When?””

“After you left.””

His heart sank.

“Mateo came here?””

She nodded.

“He talked to Vanessa.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“What did he say?””

“I couldn’t hear everything.””

Roberto sat beside her.

“But?””

Sofía hesitated.

“He asked where I was.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Roberto looked at her carefully.

“Did he ask you anything?””

Sofía didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Sofía.””

She lowered her head.

“Not today.””

“What does that mean?””

She squeezed her hands together.

“He asked me before.””

Roberto felt his chest tighten.

“When?””

“Last year.””

“Last year?””

She nodded.

“He came into my room.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What?””

Sofía’s voice became small.

“He said he wanted to talk about Mommy.””

Roberto stood immediately.

“He came into your room alone?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I tried.””

The sentence broke him.

Again.

“When?””

“After he left.””

She swallowed.

“But Vanessa told me not to.””

Roberto closed his eyes.

Another piece.

Another secret.

“What did Mateo ask you?””

Sofía looked afraid.

“He asked if I remembered the night Mommy died.””

Roberto sat back down slowly.

“What did you say?””

“I said yes.””

“And then?””

“He asked me what I remembered.””

Roberto felt anger rising.

“What did you tell him?””

“Nothing.””

“Why?””

Sofía’s fingers trembled.

“Because he sounded scared.””

The answer surprised him.

“Scared?””

She nodded.

“He kept asking me if I remembered a man’s voice.””

Roberto felt a chill.

“What man?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did Mateo say?””

Sofía looked toward the window.

“He said…”

She stopped.

“Tell me.””

“He said, ‘If you remember him, he will come back.’”

Roberto felt his blood run cold.

“Who?””

Sofía shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then she whispered:

“But I remember something else.””

“What?””

“Mommy was angry.””

Roberto looked at her.

“Angry?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She told someone to leave.””

“Who?””

Sofía closed her eyes.

Trying.

Searching.

“Daddy…”

“I’m here.””

“I remember a door.””

“A door?””

“Yes.””

She touched her temple.

“Before the crash.””

“What about it?””

“Mommy opened it.””

Roberto leaned closer.

“Where?””

“Our house.””

His heartbeat increased.

“What happened?””

“I heard Mommy say…”

Sofía’s voice became softer.

“‘I know what you did.’”

The words felt like a knife.

“Who was she talking to?””

Sofía shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then her face changed.

“But I remember the answer.””

Roberto held his breath.

“What answer?””

She whispered:

“He said…”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He said, ‘You should have stayed out of this.’”

Roberto felt like the ground disappeared.

Because that sentence.

That sentence was not from the accident.

It was before.

Someone had confronted Elena before she died.

Someone had warned her.

Someone had threatened her.

The next morning, Roberto contacted every person who had worked on the accident investigation.

Most refused to speak.

Some claimed they forgot.

Some said the records were incomplete.

But one person agreed.

The original emergency responder.

A retired paramedic named Luis Herrera.

Roberto found him living quietly outside the city.

When Luis opened the door, his expression changed immediately.

“I wondered when you would come.””

Roberto froze.

“You remember me?””

Luis nodded.

“I remember everyone from that night.””

They sat at Luis’s kitchen table.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Family.

Friends.

A normal life.

Something Roberto no longer felt he had.

“What did you see?”” Roberto asked.

Luis looked down.

“The official report was wrong.””

Roberto’s hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because someone changed it.””

“Who?””

Luis looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe nobody knows?””

“I know one thing.””

“What?””

Luis looked at him.

“There was another vehicle.””

Roberto went still.

“What vehicle?””

“Black SUV.””

“Who was inside?””

Luis shook his head.

“Couldn’t see.””

“Why wasn’t it in the report?””

“Because when I arrived, another man was already there.””

Roberto felt cold.

“Who?””

Luis hesitated.

Then:

“A man wearing a company badge.””

“What company?””

Luis looked directly at him.

“Alvarez Holdings.””

The room became silent.

“Did you recognize him?””

“No.””

“Then why mention it?””

“Because he wasn’t acting like a person who just witnessed an accident.””

Roberto leaned forward.

“What was he doing?””

Luis’s voice dropped.

“He wasn’t calling for help.””

A pause.

“He was searching the car.””

Roberto felt sick.

“What was he looking for?””

Luis looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Then he said:

“But I saw him take something.””

“What?””

“A small recorder.””

Roberto froze.

A recorder.

Elena’s recorder.

The one she had used to leave him a warning.

The one that somehow ended up hidden for twelve years.

“Did he see you?””

Luis nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he hurt you?””

A bitter smile crossed Luis’s face.

“Because he thought I was dead.””

Roberto stared.

“What?””

“I was trapped under the ambulance equipment.””

Luis leaned closer.

“And I heard him say one thing before he left.””

Roberto’s voice was barely a whisper.

“What?””

Luis answered:

“He said, ‘Mateo will handle the rest.’”

The room went silent.

Roberto stood slowly.

His phone began ringing.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

No greeting this time.

Only silence.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

A voice that made every muscle in his body freeze.

“Roberto.””

His face changed.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it every day for twelve years.

It was not Mateo.

It was not Adrian.

It was someone else.

Someone much closer.

Someone who had been beside Sofía all this time.

Then the voice whispered:

“You need to stop searching before your daughter remembers everything.””

Roberto’s grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

The answer came softly.

Almost sadly.

“Someone who has been protecting Sofía from the truth.””

A pause.

“And someone who knows what really happened to Elena.””

Roberto stared at the phone.

Then the person said the words that shattered him:

“Your wife didn’t die in that crash.””

May you like

Silence.

“She was alive when they took her away.””
