Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew the Truth

Roberto stayed silent.

The phone remained pressed against his ear, but he couldn’t find the words.

Adrian Ruiz.

The name had followed him through documents, old reports, and forgotten memories.

The man who disappeared after Elena’s accident.

The man connected to the damaged vehicle.

The man whose sister had entered his home pretending to be someone who cared about his daughter.

And now that same man was telling him that Mateo Vargas was the person responsible.

The same Mateo who had stood beside him at the hospital.

The same Mateo who had held baby Sofía while Roberto signed paperwork with shaking hands.

The same Mateo who had said, “I’ll protect her like she’s my own.””

Roberto’s voice finally returned.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Adrian answered carefully.

“That’s not important.””

“It is if you expect me to believe you.””

“I knew you would say that.””

Roberto walked toward the office door.

“Then explain why I should believe anything you tell me.””

Another silence.

Then Adrian said:

“Because I was there the night your wife died.””

Roberto stopped.

His hand tightened around the phone.

“You were at the accident?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you come forward?””

The line went quiet.

When Adrian finally spoke, his voice sounded older.

Tired.

“Because I was afraid.””

Roberto laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“Afraid?””

“Yes.””

“My wife died.””

“I know.””

“My daughter lost her mother and her eyesight.””

“I know.””

“And you’re telling me you were there and did nothing?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than an excuse.

Roberto’s voice became colder.

“Talk.””

Adrian took a breath.

“Your car was supposed to fail on a specific road.””

Roberto frowned.

“What?””

“The brakes were damaged before you left.””

Roberto felt his stomach tighten.

“But Elena was driving.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because someone changed the plan.””

The room seemed to disappear around him.

“What plan?””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Your death.””

Roberto said nothing.

The possibility was too impossible.

Too cruel.

Too calculated.

“Someone wanted you gone,” Adrian continued.

“But Elena took the car instead.””

Roberto looked at the photograph of Elena sitting on his desk.

Her smile.

Her eyes.

The woman who had always believed people were better than they appeared.

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation made Roberto’s anger rise.

“Who?””

“You already know the name.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Roberto closed his eyes.

“No.””

“Mateo.””

The name felt like a physical blow.

Roberto ended the call.

Not because he didn’t believe Adrian.

Because a part of him did.

And that terrified him.

The next morning, Roberto arrived at Alvarez Holdings before sunrise.

His employees were shocked.

Nobody saw him arrive before 8 AM.

Nobody.

The building was almost empty.

Only security guards and cleaning staff moved through the quiet halls.

Roberto walked into Mateo’s office.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, everything was exactly the same.

A neat desk.

Family photographs.

Awards.

Books.

A room belonging to a man who had spent fifteen years convincing everyone he was trustworthy.

Roberto walked slowly around.

Then he saw something.

A photograph on Mateo’s bookshelf.

It was from ten years ago.

A charity event.

Roberto, Mateo, and Vanessa.

Together.

He picked it up.

His eyes moved between their faces.

How long had they known each other?

How long had they been hiding things?

The door opened.

Mateo walked in.

“Roberto?””

His expression changed immediately.

Not fear.

Surprise.

Then concern.

The perfect reaction.

“What are you doing here so early?””

Roberto placed the photograph back.

“Could ask you the same thing.””

Mateo smiled slightly.

“I could ask you why you’re in my office.””

“I own this building.””

Mateo laughed softly.

“There he is.””

The old Mateo.

The familiar Mateo.

The man who knew exactly how to make Roberto lower his guard.

But this time, Roberto watched differently.

Every smile.

Every gesture.

Every word.

He noticed everything.

“Where were you three nights ago?””

Mateo’s smile faded slightly.

“Excuse me?””

“The night you met Vanessa in my kitchen.””

For one second.

Only one.

Mateo’s face changed.

Then it disappeared.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Roberto stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

Mateo slowly walked closer.

“Roberto.””

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t use that voice.””

“What voice?””

“The one you use when you think you’re helping me.””

The room became quiet.

Mateo looked at him carefully.

Then he sighed.

“What happened?””

Roberto laughed quietly.

“What happened?””

“Yes.””

“You really want to ask me that?””

Mateo sat down.

“Roberto, whatever this is, you’re upset.””

“No.””

Roberto leaned forward.

“I’m finally paying attention.””

Something shifted in Mateo’s expression.

A tiny crack.

Roberto saw it.

“You know what Sofía told me?””

Mateo looked away.

“What?””

“She heard Vanessa talking on the phone.””

“Children misunderstand things.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

Roberto’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s exactly what Vanessa said.””

Mateo became still.

A mistake.

A small one.

But enough.

Roberto stepped back.

“You both use the same excuses.””

Mateo stood.

“Roberto, listen to me.””

“No. You listen.””

His voice echoed.

“For twelve years, I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Roberto pointed toward him.

“You were the person who helped me survive after Elena died.””

Mateo’s expression softened.

“I loved Elena too.””

“Then why did she leave me a recording warning me about you?””

The silence was immediate.

Mateo stopped breathing.

And Roberto knew.

He knew before Mateo spoke.

Because innocent people ask questions.

Guilty people prepare answers.

“What recording?””

Roberto stared.

“You knew.””

Mateo looked away.

“I didn’t say that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

The office felt smaller.

Mateo sat back down.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“Roberto…”

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Mateo rubbed his face.

“There are things you don’t know.””

“Then tell me.””

“It’s not that simple.””

Roberto walked closer.

“My wife died.””

Mateo closed his eyes.

“And my daughter grew up without her mother.””

“I know.””

“You don’t get to tell me it’s complicated.””

Mateo looked at him.

Then said something that made Roberto freeze.

“Elena was going to expose everything.””

“What?””

Mateo swallowed.

“She found financial records.””

“What records?””

“Your company.””

Roberto stared.

“My company?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It does.””

Mateo looked around the office.

“This empire you built…”

He paused.

“Someone wanted control of it.””

Roberto felt sick.

“Who?””

Mateo didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

Because Roberto understood.

The accident.

The papers.

Vanessa.

The secret meetings.

It all connected.

Someone wanted his life.

His company.

His daughter.

Everything.

“Was Elena going to leave you?””

Mateo looked down.

“No.””

“Then why warn me about you?””

Mateo’s jaw tightened.

“Because she misunderstood.””

Roberto stared.

There it was.

Another excuse.

Another attempt to reshape reality.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to understand that I was trying to protect you.””

Roberto laughed.

“You were protecting me?””

“Yes.””

“By hiding the truth about my wife’s death?””

Mateo said nothing.

The silence answered for him.

That afternoon, Roberto met Adrian in an abandoned café outside the city.

He arrived alone.

No security.

No employees.

No warning.

He needed answers from someone who had nothing left to lose.

Adrian sat in the corner.

Older than Roberto expected.

Exhausted.

A man carrying years of guilt.

When Roberto approached, Adrian stood.

“Mr. Alvarez.””

“Sit.””

They faced each other.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Roberto placed Elena’s recording device on the table.

Adrian looked at it.

“She kept it.””

“You knew about it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Adrian looked down.

“Because I helped her make it.””

Roberto’s expression hardened.

“Start talking.””

Adrian nodded.

“Your wife discovered Mateo was moving money through fake companies.””

Roberto frowned.

“Mateo?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted your company.””

Roberto shook his head.

“He was my partner.””

Adrian looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

The words stayed between them.

Then Adrian continued.

“Mateo knew Elena was investigating. He knew she was close.””

Roberto’s hands tightened.

“And Vanessa?””

Adrian looked away.

“My sister didn’t know everything at first.””

“Don’t defend her.””

“I’m not.””

Adrian sighed.

“She was manipulated too.””

Roberto said nothing.

Because he didn’t know what to believe anymore.

“Then why did she enter my life?””

Adrian’s answer came quietly.

“Because Mateo needed someone close to you.””

Roberto felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked directly into his eyes.

“It means Vanessa wasn’t chosen because she loved you.””

A pause.

“She was chosen because she could replace Elena.””

Roberto stared.

The café noise disappeared.

The world outside kept moving.

But inside, everything stopped.

Then Adrian reached into his jacket and placed a small envelope on the table.

“Your wife left this for you.””

Roberto looked at it.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I get it before?””

Adrian’s face changed.

“Because Mateo took it.””

Roberto opened the envelope with shaking hands.

Inside was one piece of paper.

Only one sentence was written.

His wife’s handwriting.

The handwriting he knew better than his own.

*Roberto, if anything happens to me, the person who hurts us will not be a stranger. He will be standing beside you.*

Roberto stared at the words.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

One sentence appeared on the screen.

*Your daughter knows more about the night Elena died than you realize.*

Roberto looked up slowly.

May you like

Because suddenly, he wasn’t just searching for who betrayed him.

He was wondering what Sofía had been forced to keep hidden all these years.
