Chapter 6: The Girl Who Survived

Roberto stood frozen in the hallway.

The phone remained against his ear.

But he barely heard anything after Vanessa’s final words.

*The little girl who survived the crash.*

For twelve years, Roberto had thought Sofía was the victim of a tragedy.

A child who lost her mother.

A child who lost her sight.

A child who survived because fate had been merciful.

But now Mateo was afraid of her.

Not because she was dangerous.

Because she knew something.

Something that could destroy him.

“Where is Mateo now?”” Roberto asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“You said he came to your house.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Roberto looked at the clock.

That meant after he left the café.

After Adrian contacted him.

After he started asking questions.

Mateo was moving.

Quickly.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.

“He asked if you had spoken to Adrian.””

Roberto tightened his grip on the phone.

“And?””

“I told him no.””

“Did he believe you?””

A pause.

“No.””

The answer was honest.

For once.

“Why are you helping me?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice sounded different.

Not polished.

Not controlled.

Human.

“Because I realized something.””

“What?””

“I was never part of his plan.””

Roberto stared at the wall.

“Explain.””

“He never loved me.””

The words came quietly.

“He needed someone who could get close to you.””

“And you agreed?””

“I thought I was helping him with a business problem.””

Roberto’s expression hardened.

“A business problem?””

“I didn’t know about Elena.””

The mention of his wife’s name changed something in her voice.

“I swear, Roberto. I didn’t know.””

He wanted to believe that.

But wanting something and trusting it were two different things.

“Where is Mateo’s office tonight?””

“I don’t know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I’m serious.””

She took a breath.

“But I know where he keeps the old files.””

Roberto stopped.

“What files?””

“The ones he never wanted anyone to find.””

Twenty minutes later, Roberto stood outside Mateo’s private storage facility.

It wasn’t listed under Alvarez Holdings.

It wasn’t connected to any company records.

According to Vanessa, Mateo had rented it years ago.

A place nobody would think to search.

Daniel stood beside him.

“You’re sure about this?””

Roberto looked at the locked door.

“No.””

Daniel glanced at him.

“No?””

“I’m sure about one thing.””

“What?””

“Everything I believed for twelve years was wrong.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because there was nothing to say.

The lock was opened within minutes.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Financial records.

Documents.

Photographs.

Personal files.

A hidden history.

Roberto walked deeper into the room.

Then he saw something.

A box labeled with a date.

The date of the accident.

His breathing changed.

Daniel noticed.

“Roberto?””

He ignored him.

He opened the box.

Inside was a file.

On top was a photograph.

Elena.

His wife.

Standing outside their old house.

But she wasn’t alone.

Beside her was Mateo.

They were arguing.

Roberto stared.

He had never seen this picture before.

“What is this?””

Daniel took it carefully.

“I don’t know.””

Roberto opened the file underneath.

The first page made his blood run cold.

*Vehicle Inspection Report — Confidential*

His eyes moved across the page.

The brakes had been manually damaged.

Not defective.

Damaged.

Someone had done it intentionally.

His hands shook.

All these years.

All those years.

He thought Elena died because of a terrible accident.

But someone had planned it.

Someone had tried to kill him.

And Elena died instead.

Daniel turned another page.

“Roberto.””

The tone of his voice changed.

Roberto looked up.

Daniel was holding another document.

“What?””

Daniel handed it over.

It was a transfer agreement.

A company ownership document.

With one condition.

If Roberto died, Mateo would gain control of a large portion of the company.

Roberto stared.

“When was this created?””

Daniel checked the date.

“Three months before the accident.””

Three months.

Mateo had planned.

Before Elena died.

Before the crash.

Before Roberto ever suspected him.

Then Roberto saw another document.

A handwritten note.

Elena’s handwriting.

His heart stopped.

He picked it up.

*I know what Mateo is trying to do. I confronted him tonight. He admitted enough to scare me. If anything happens, Roberto cannot trust him.*

Roberto closed his eyes.

A painful realization settled over him.

Elena had been fighting alone.

While he was building his empire.

While he was chasing success.

While he believed his best friend was protecting his family.

His wife had been trying to save them.

The sound of footsteps interrupted them.

Roberto turned.

“Daniel.””

The security manager immediately reached for his phone.

But Roberto stopped him.

“Wait.””

A figure appeared at the entrance.

Mateo.

He stood there calmly.

Almost peacefully.

Roberto stared.

“How did you find us?””

Mateo looked around the room.

Then at the open boxes.

“I should ask you the same thing.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re not leaving.””

Mateo smiled sadly.

“Daniel, after fifteen years, that’s how you greet me?””

Roberto looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Mateo’s expression changed.

“Don’t what?””

“Pretend.””

A long silence.

Then Mateo sighed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find these.””

Roberto felt something inside him break.

Not because Mateo admitted it.

Because he didn’t deny it.

“Why?””

Mateo looked down.

“Why what?””

“Why Elena?””

Mateo’s face tightened.

“Roberto…”

“Why did you let her die?””

The question hung in the air.

Mateo looked away.

“I didn’t.””

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

“You knew the brakes were damaged?””

Mateo didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

Roberto stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Mateo finally looked at him.

“I tried to stop it.””

Roberto laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s true.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Mateo’s jaw tightened.

“Because by the time I understood what was happening, it was already too late.””

“Who?””

Mateo looked at the floor.

“Who did this?””

Another silence.

Then:

“The person who ordered it wasn’t me.””

Roberto froze.

“What?””

Mateo looked up.

“There was someone else.””

Daniel exchanged a glance with Roberto.

“Who?””

Mateo hesitated.

And for the first time, Roberto saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not an act.

Not manipulation.

Fear.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

Mateo stepped closer.

“Roberto, you think I wanted your company.””

“Didn’t you?””

“I wanted control.””

“Same thing.””

“No.””

Mateo shook his head.

“Not the same.””

He pointed toward the files.

“Those documents were bait.””

Roberto frowned.

“What?””

“Someone wanted you to find them.””

The room went quiet.

“What are you saying?””

Mateo looked toward the photograph of Elena.

“She knew too much.””

Roberto felt anger rising.

“Don’t talk about my wife.””

“She discovered something bigger than me.””

“Bigger?””

Mateo nodded.

“Much bigger.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re lying.””

Mateo looked at him.

“I wish I was.””

Roberto stared.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Mateo looked at him.

And said the one thing Roberto never expected.

“The night Elena died…”

A pause.

“She wasn’t running from me.””

Roberto’s face hardened.

“Then who was she running from?””

Mateo swallowed.

“She was trying to protect Sofía.””

Roberto felt his heartbeat stop.

“Protect her from what?””

Mateo looked toward the door.

As if he was afraid someone was listening.

Then he whispered:

“From the person who was supposed to be protecting her.””

Roberto’s blood turned cold.

“What does that mean?””

Mateo didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Roberto’s phone.

At the photograph of Sofía on the lock screen.

Then he said:

“Your daughter wasn’t just in the car that night.””

Roberto stared.

“She saw something.””

The room went silent.

“And whoever caused that accident…”

May you like

Mateo’s voice dropped.

“…has spent twelve years making sure she never remembers.””
