Chapter 8: The Woman Who Never Got to Say Goodbye

Roberto forgot how to breathe.

The world around him became distant.

The sound of Luis moving in the kitchen.

The ticking clock on the wall.

The cars passing outside.

Everything disappeared.

Only one sentence remained.

*Your wife didn’t die in that crash.*

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Not because he didn’t believe it.

Because he was afraid he did.

The voice on the other end remained calm.

“Roberto…”

“Who are you?””

A pause.

“You already know.””

His heart raced.

“No.””

“You do.””

The voice softened.

“I was there that night.””

Roberto’s eyes moved toward Luis.

The old paramedic looked confused.

“Who is it?”” Luis mouthed.

Roberto ignored him.

“Tell me your name.””

The person hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Clara.””

The name meant nothing.

But something about the voice did.

A feeling.

A memory.

Something buried deep.

“Clara who?””

Before the person answered, the call ended.

Roberto stared at the phone.

Then immediately called back.

No answer.

For the next hour, Roberto barely spoke.

Luis watched him carefully.

“You heard something.””

Roberto looked up.

“My wife may have survived the crash.””

Luis’s expression changed.

“What?””

“Someone says she was alive.””

The old paramedic sat down slowly.

“I saw the accident.””

“You saw the car.””

Luis nodded.

“But not everything.””

Roberto looked at him.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Luis looked uncomfortable.

“After I arrived, there was a moment when everyone moved away from the vehicle.””

“Why?””

“Because another ambulance was called.””

“Another ambulance?””

“Yes.””

Roberto felt cold.

“Why?””

Luis looked down.

“Because someone told us there was another injured person.””

Roberto’s heart stopped.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you see Elena?””

Luis hesitated.

“Yes.””

“And?””

“She was unconscious.””

“Was she alive?””

Luis didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Roberto stood.

“Was she alive?””

Finally, Luis whispered:

“Yes.””

The word destroyed him.

Because for twelve years, he had imagined the worst moment of his life.

He had imagined Elena’s last seconds.

Her final thoughts.

Her final breath.

And now there was a possibility he had been grieving someone who was still fighting.

“What happened after that?””

Luis rubbed his hands together.

“I was pulled away.””

“By who?””

“Two men.””

“Police?””

“No.””

Roberto’s jaw tightened.

“Who?””

Luis looked at him.

“Company security.””

The answer hit hard.

“Alvarez Holdings security?””

Luis nodded.

Roberto stepped back.

His company.

His employees.

His own name attached to the people who took his wife away.

“I need everything you remember.””

Luis looked afraid.

“I already told you.””

“No.””

Roberto shook his head.

“You told me what happened at the crash.””

His voice lowered.

“I need to know what happened after.””

Roberto returned to the mansion before sunset.

He didn’t go to his office.

He didn’t check his emails.

He didn’t call anyone.

He went straight to Sofía.

She was sitting on the floor of her room, organizing small objects by texture.

Smooth stones.

Wooden pieces.

Fabric samples.

Things that helped her understand the world.

She looked up.

“Daddy?””

He sat beside her.

“Yes?””

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

Roberto looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“You’re quiet.””

He smiled sadly.

“You notice everything.””

She nodded.

“Because I have to.””

The words hurt.

Because she was right.

The world had forced her to pay attention.

“Sweetheart.””

“Yes?””

“Do you remember anyone else from that night?””

Her hands stopped.

The room became quiet.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

She frowned slightly.

“Why?””

“Because I need to know the truth.””

A long silence.

Then Sofía whispered:

“There was a woman.””

Roberto froze.

“What woman?””

“She was crying.””

“Where?””

“Near Mommy.””

His heart began racing.

“What did she look like?””

“I don’t know.””

“Anything?””

Sofía closed her eyes.

“She smelled like lavender.””

Roberto felt a strange sensation.

Lavender.

Elena used lavender perfume.

But Sofía said the woman smelled like lavender.

Not Elena.

Someone else.

“What did she say?””

“I don’t remember.””

“Anything at all?””

Sofía became frustrated.

“I was little.””

“I know.””

“I was scared.””

Roberto immediately softened.

“I’m sorry.””

She took a breath.

Then:

“I remember her voice.””

“What did she say?””

Sofía whispered:

“She said, ‘I’m sorry.’”

Roberto stared.

“To who?””

Sofía shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then she added:

“But Mommy answered.””

His heart stopped.

“What did Mommy say?””

Sofía’s face tightened.

“She said…”

A pause.

“‘Take care of my daughter.’”

Roberto closed his eyes.

Because that wasn’t something Elena would say if she knew she was going to die.

That was something a mother said when she thought she might never return.

That night, Roberto searched through old records.

Every employee.

Every security worker.

Every person connected to Alvarez Holdings at the time of the accident.

Then he found something.

A name.

A woman who worked in company security twelve years ago.

Clara Bennett.

His phone almost slipped from his hand.

Clara.

The woman from the call.

He searched further.

Former security analyst.

Assigned to executive protection.

Resigned one week after Elena’s accident.

No explanation.

No forwarding address.

Gone.

Roberto stared at the screen.

The woman who knew the truth had been inside his company.

And she disappeared.

At midnight, Vanessa appeared at the mansion.

Roberto almost refused to let her in.

But when he saw her face, he stopped.

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“What happened?””

Vanessa entered quickly.

“Mateo knows about Clara.””

Roberto closed the door.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“You contacted her?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

Vanessa looked around nervously.

“He has been searching for her for years.””

Roberto stared.

“Why?””

“Because she knows what happened after the crash.””

The answer confirmed everything.

“What happened after the crash?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Roberto…”

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The accident wasn’t supposed to kill Elena.””

Silence.

“Then what was supposed to happen?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She was supposed to disappear.””

Roberto felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because Elena discovered something.””

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Mateo wasn’t working alone.””

Roberto stared.

“Who else?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then:

“Someone inside your family.””

The words hung in the air.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

Toward Sofía’s room.

Then back at him.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

Roberto stepped closer.

“Then why are you afraid?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with panic.

“Because I know what Mateo does to people who betray him.””

A silence.

Then Roberto’s phone vibrated.

A message.

From Clara.

Only one line.

*Meet me where Elena was supposed to say goodbye. Come alone.*

Attached was a location.

Roberto opened it.

His face changed.

Because he knew that place.

The old roadside chapel near the accident site.

The place where he had buried the memory of the worst night of his life.

Vanessa saw his expression.

“What is it?””

Roberto didn’t answer.

He grabbed his coat.

“Roberto.””

He stopped.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Don’t go there.””

“Why?””

Her voice shook.

“Because if Clara is finally ready to tell you the truth…”

A pause.

“…it means someone else is ready to stop her.””

Roberto arrived at the abandoned chapel at 1:15 AM.

The rain had started again.

Just like that night.

The same cold air.

The same road.

The same silence.

He stepped inside.

The old wooden door creaked.

“Clara?””

No answer.

He walked deeper.

Then he saw something on the altar.

A photograph.

Elena.

Alive.

Standing outside a small house.

Holding a baby blanket.

On the back of the photo were four words.

*She waited for you.*

Roberto’s hands shook.

Then he heard footsteps behind him.

He turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Older.

Tired.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Roberto.””

He stared.

Because after twelve years…

He recognized her.

Not from the voice.

Not from records.

From the one thing he had never forgotten.

Her face.

The woman who had held his daughter after the crash.

The woman who had disappeared.

Clara whispered:

“I’m sorry I waited so long.””

Roberto couldn’t speak.

Then she said the words he had spent twelve years wishing were impossible.

“Elena was alive.””

May you like

A tear fell down her face.

“And I was the one who helped her escape.””
