Chapter 9: The Video That Changed Everything
The screen froze on Hannah's face.
Marcus couldn't blink.
He couldn't breathe.
The security camera footage played silently in the dark study.
A timestamp sat in the corner.
The night his father died.
The night Hannah said she came to help him.
The night everyone had hidden from him.
And there she was.
Standing beside Richard Bennett.
Marcus felt like the floor had disappeared beneath him.
Behind him, Hannah whispered:
"Marcus...""
He didn't turn.
Not yet.
Because he was afraid.
Afraid that if he looked at her, he would see a stranger.
The video continued.
The quality was old.
Grainy.
But clear enough.
Richard sat behind his desk.
His face looked tired.
Older than Marcus remembered.
Hannah stood across from him.
They were talking.
No sound.
No answers.
Marcus increased the volume.
Static filled the room.
Then voices.
Richard's voice came through first.
"You should not have come here.""
Hannah looked down.
"I had no choice.""
Marcus froze.
No choice?
Richard leaned back.
"Daniel should never have contacted you.""
Hannah looked up.
"My father knows the truth.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why are you protecting him?""
Richard's expression changed.
"I am not protecting Daniel.""
A pause.
"I am protecting you.""
Marcus looked at Hannah.
She closed her eyes.
The video continued.
Richard stood.
"You don't understand how dangerous this is.""
Hannah shook her head.
"I understand more than you think.""
"No.""
Richard's voice became softer.
"You are young. You still believe telling the truth always fixes things.""
Hannah looked angry.
"And you don't?""
Richard looked away.
"Sometimes the truth destroys innocent people.""
Marcus felt a strange pain in his chest.
Because those words sounded exactly like the excuse everyone had used.
Protecting.
Saving.
Keeping things hidden.
Then Hannah said something that made him stop.
"I know about Evelyn.""
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at his mother.
Evelyn stood near the doorway.
Her face had gone completely white.
Richard in the video looked shocked.
"What did you say?""
Hannah stepped closer.
"I know she moved the money.""
Marcus held his breath.
Richard looked around.
"Who told you?""
"Nobody.""
"Then how?""
Hannah looked down.
"Because I found the records.""
Richard sat down slowly.
"You need to leave.""
Hannah frowned.
"What?""
"Leave this alone.""
"No.""
Her voice became stronger.
"I lost my family because people like you decided silence was easier.""
Richard stared at her.
"You don't know what you're dealing with.""
"I know exactly what I'm dealing with.""
A pause.
"People who are afraid.""
Marcus felt his heart tighten.
That sounded like Hannah.
The woman who always fought for what was right.
Even when it hurt her.
Richard looked at her.
Then quietly said:
"You're more like your mother than your father.""
Hannah's expression changed.
"Don't say that.""
"Why?""
"Because my mother stayed quiet.""
Richard nodded.
"And you refuse to.""
The video continued.
Hannah reached into her bag.
She placed something on the desk.
A document.
Marcus leaned closer.
"What is that?""
The video had no subtitles.
But he could read Richard's reaction.
Shock.
Fear.
He picked up the document.
Then looked at Hannah.
"Where did you get this?""
"From my father.""
Richard looked terrified.
"Daniel gave this to you?""
"No.""
Hannah paused.
"He wanted me to have it.""
Richard stared.
"Why?""
"Because he said you were the only person who could stop Evelyn.""
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
Then the door behind Richard opened.
Someone entered.
The camera angle didn't show their face.
Only a shadow.
Richard immediately turned.
"You shouldn't be here.""
Marcus froze.
The voice came through.
A woman's voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
Evelyn.
Everyone in the room recognized it.
Hannah stepped back.
Evelyn walked closer.
"You always did have a weakness for saving people, Richard.""
Richard's face hardened.
"Leave.""
"No.""
Evelyn looked at Hannah.
"I think it's time she learns the truth.""
Hannah looked confused.
"What truth?""
Evelyn smiled.
"The truth about your father.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Don't.""
Evelyn ignored him.
"Your father wasn't just involved in the money.""
Hannah looked at Richard.
"Is that true?""
Richard didn't answer.
And that silence was enough.
Evelyn continued.
"Daniel Whitmore destroyed your family.""
Hannah shook her head.
"No.""
"Yes.""
Evelyn stepped closer.
"And Richard helped him.""
Marcus felt the room spinning.
Two versions.
Two stories.
The video showed something nobody had admitted.
Everyone had lied.
But why?
Then Richard said something that changed everything.
"I did it to protect Marcus.""
Marcus froze.
His own name.
Again.
Evelyn looked furious.
"Don't pretend this is about him.""
"It is.""
"No.""
Her voice became sharp.
"It is about your guilt.""
Richard looked at her.
"You threatened Hannah.""
Evelyn smiled.
"I warned her.""
"You threatened her.""
Silence.
Then Hannah in the video spoke.
"What did you do?""
Evelyn looked at her.
"Nothing you weren't already going to do.""
Hannah frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Evelyn stepped closer.
"It means you need to ask yourself why Richard trusted you with the evidence.""
Marcus leaned toward the screen.
What evidence?
Richard looked at Hannah.
Then at Evelyn.
"She has nothing to do with this.""
"Maybe not.""
Evelyn smiled.
"But Marcus does.""
The video suddenly shook.
The camera moved.
Someone had touched it.
Then the sound became distorted.
Marcus held his breath.
The last clear image showed Richard grabbing the flash drive.
He handed it to Hannah.
And said:
"Take this to Marcus.""
Marcus's eyes widened.
The drive.
His father had given it to Hannah.
Not Evelyn.
Not Helen.
Hannah.
Then Richard said something else.
Something that made Marcus go completely still.
"Tell my son the truth.""
A pause.
"And tell him the person who betrayed me is not the person he thinks.""
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
The study was silent.
Marcus slowly turned away from the computer.
Everyone was looking at him.
Hannah was crying.
Evelyn looked defeated.
Helen looked like she had expected this moment.
Marcus looked at his wife.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Hannah wiped her tears.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"That you would see this.""
She pointed at the screen.
"That you would think I was part of it.""
Marcus looked at the video again.
"You had the flash drive.""
"Yes.""
"You had proof.""
"Yes.""
"Why hide it?""
Her voice broke.
"Because your mother found me before I could give it to you.""
Marcus frowned.
"What?""
Hannah looked at Evelyn.
"She told me if I went to the police, she would tell everyone I killed your father.""
Marcus turned.
"Mom?""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"I never said that.""
Hannah shook her head.
"You did.""
"I was angry.""
"You were desperate.""
Silence.
Then Helen spoke.
"Marcus.""
He looked at her.
"There is something else.""
"What?""
Helen stepped forward.
"The video was edited.""
Marcus frowned.
"What?""
"The part you just watched is not the full recording.""
He looked at the screen.
"How do you know?""
"Because I saw the original.""
Marcus felt cold.
"What happened after Evelyn entered?""
Helen looked at him.
"Something that changes everything.""
"What?""
Helen took a deep breath.
"Richard revealed who he believed betrayed him.""
Marcus waited.
"And?""
Helen looked toward the flash drive.
"The missing part is the reason someone has been trying to stop you from finding this.""
Marcus looked at the device.
Then at the computer.
The truth was close.
Closer than ever.
But before he could play the rest...
The screen suddenly turned on by itself.
A new video appeared.
Not from the flash drive.
A live camera feed.
Marcus stared.
Because the camera showed the outside of the mansion.
And standing at the gate...
Was a man holding a gun.
Daniel's voice came through Marcus's phone.
Urgent.
"Marcus, get everyone away from the house.""
Marcus looked at the screen.
"Why?""
Daniel whispered:
"Because the person who has been controlling this entire situation just arrived.""
The camera zoomed in.
Marcus stopped breathing.
The person standing at the gate was someone he knew.
Someone he trusted.
Someone he never imagined could be part of this.
And then the front door opened.
A voice behind him said:
"Marcus.""
May you like
Everyone turned.
The person from the screen was already inside.
