Chapter 4: The Recording My Father Left Behind

Marcus couldn't breathe.

The voice coming from the small black device was impossible.

It belonged to a man who had been gone for ten years.

His father.

Richard Bennett.

A man Marcus remembered as confident, patient, and impossible to shake.

A man who always seemed to know the right thing to say.

A man who, according to everyone, had died peacefully in his sleep.

But now his voice filled the room.

"Marcus... if you're hearing this, it means Evelyn finally came after Hannah.""

Nobody moved.

Not Marcus.

Not Hannah.

Not even Evelyn.

The recording continued.

"I hoped this day would never come.""

Marcus stared at the device.

His heart pounded.

His father sounded older than he remembered.

Tired.

Like a man carrying a burden for years.

"I tried to protect you from the truth because I believed some secrets only create pain. But there are some truths that become more dangerous when hidden.""

A cold feeling moved through Marcus.

He looked at his mother.

Evelyn's face was completely still.

Too still.

"Mom...""

She didn't answer.

Marcus bent down and picked up the recording device.

"Where did this come from?""

Evelyn looked at him.

Her voice was quiet.

"Your father.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I'm not.""

"Then why do you have it?""

For a moment, she said nothing.

The recording played again.

"If Evelyn is with you when you hear this, Marcus, do not believe everything she tells you.""

Marcus felt his fingers tighten around the device.

Hannah covered her mouth.

Richard's voice continued.

"Your mother has spent years convincing herself that what she did was necessary. She will say she was protecting our family.""

A pause.

"But protecting a family does not mean destroying another person.""

The room became painfully silent.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

For the first time in his entire life, his mother seemed unable to defend herself.

"Stop it.""

Her voice was sharp.

Marcus turned.

"What?""

"Turn it off.""

"No.""

The word surprised even him.

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"Marcus.""

"No.""

He held the device tighter.

"I've spent my entire life listening to you explain what is right and wrong.""

His voice shook.

"But now I'm finally hearing his side.""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"You don't understand what you're doing.""

"Then explain.""

She stopped.

"Explain.""

Marcus pointed toward the device.

"Why did my father record this?""

No answer.

"Why did he warn me about you?""

Still nothing.

Hannah looked at Evelyn.

"Because you knew.""

Evelyn turned toward her.

"Be quiet.""

Marcus immediately stepped between them.

"No.""

His voice was colder than before.

"She talks.""

Hannah looked at him.

A mixture of fear and relief crossed her face.

Marcus had chosen her.

Not his mother.

Not yet completely.

But enough.

The recording continued.

"Hannah was never the enemy.""

Marcus looked down.

His father's words felt like a direct message from the past.

"She was a victim of a mistake I helped create.""

Marcus froze.

A mistake?

"What mistake?"" he whispered.

Richard continued.

"Years ago, before Marcus met Hannah, I made a business decision that changed two families forever.""

Marcus looked at the photograph still lying on the table.

His father.

Hannah's father.

The document.

"It started with Daniel Whitmore.""

Hannah closed her eyes.

Marcus looked at her.

"You knew my father.""

She nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"How?""

"I told you. Our families knew each other.""

"No.""

Marcus shook his head.

"There is more.""

Hannah looked down.

"There is.""

Evelyn interrupted.

"Because she was involved.""

Marcus turned.

"Stop saying that.""

"Why? Because it's uncomfortable?""

"Because you keep making accusations without proof.""

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

"Your father left proof.""

Marcus looked at the device.

The recording continued.

"Daniel Whitmore made serious mistakes. But he was not the only person responsible.""

A pause.

"The person who helped him hide those mistakes was someone much closer to me.""

Marcus felt a chill.

The room seemed to shrink.

His eyes slowly moved toward Evelyn.

The recording continued.

"I trusted that person.""

Another pause.

"That was my greatest mistake.""

The device went silent.

Only for a moment.

Then another section began.

Marcus noticed something.

The recording had been edited.

There were gaps.

Missing parts.

Someone had cut pieces out.

His father wasn't just leaving a message.

Someone had tried to control what Marcus heard.

"Who edited this?""

Evelyn looked away.

Marcus noticed.

"You.""

Her expression hardened.

"I found it after your father died.""

"And you cut it?""

"I was trying to protect you.""

Marcus laughed.

A painful laugh.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

Evelyn's voice became emotional.

"Because it's true.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"Because it's the easiest excuse.""

The words hung in the air.

Hannah watched him silently.

Marcus looked at her.

"How long have you known about my father?""

"Since before we married.""

The answer hurt.

Not because she knew.

Because she kept it from him.

"Why?""

Hannah's eyes filled with tears.

"Because when I met you, I didn't know who your father was.""

Marcus frowned.

"What?""

"I only found out after we were already together.""

She looked at the photograph.

"When I saw this picture in your family's old documents, I recognized my father.""

Marcus stared.

"You found it accidentally?""

"Yes.""

"Then what happened?""

Hannah swallowed.

"I confronted your mother.""

"And?""

Her voice became smaller.

"She told me if I told you, she would make sure everyone believed I married you for your family's money.""

Marcus felt anger rising.

"She threatened you.""

Hannah nodded.

"She said people would believe her because my father had a criminal record.""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Because it was the truth.""

Marcus looked at her.

"No.""

His voice was firm.

"Not enough.""

Evelyn's expression changed.

"Excuse me?""

"You keep using Hannah's father's actions to define her.""

He pointed toward the recording.

"But my father clearly believed there was more.""

Evelyn looked almost offended.

"You are choosing her over your own mother?""

Marcus stared at her.

"I am choosing the truth.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn reached into her handbag.

Marcus immediately noticed.

"What are you doing?""

She pulled out a folder.

Not a weapon.

Documents.

She threw them onto the table.

"Fine.""

Her voice was different now.

Less controlled.

More desperate.

"You want the truth?""

Marcus looked at the folder.

"Yes.""

"Then read it.""

He didn't move.

"What's inside?""

"Everything.""

Hannah looked frightened.

"Marcus, don't.""

He turned.

"Why?""

"Because she wants you to see only what helps her.""

Evelyn smiled.

"Isn't that exactly what your father did?""

Marcus looked down at the folder.

Two voices.

Two versions.

Two families.

And somehow, he was standing in the middle.

He opened the folder.

The first page was a financial report.

His eyes moved across the numbers.

Then stopped.

A signature.

A signature he knew.

His father's.

But below it...

Was another signature.

One that made his blood run cold.

Because it belonged to someone who had been in this room moments ago.

Marcus looked up slowly.

"Mom...""

Evelyn didn't respond.

He turned the page.

Another document.

Another date.

Another signature.

Then he saw the final page.

A handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

And it was written by his father.

*"If Marcus ever learns the truth, tell him the woman who raised him was not the only person who lied.""*

Marcus looked at Hannah.

She looked just as shocked as he was.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across his cheek.

Marcus didn't recognize him.

But Hannah did.

Her face drained of color.

"No...""

The man stepped inside.

His eyes locked onto Marcus.

"I see Evelyn finally brought me back into your life.""

Marcus stood still.

"Who are you?""

The man's expression darkened.

Then he answered.

"I'm Daniel Whitmore.""

Hannah whispered:

"My father.""

Daniel looked at the documents on the table.

Then at Evelyn.

"You should have let the past stay buried.""

Evelyn smiled coldly.

"No, Daniel.""

She looked at Marcus.

"The past is exactly what will save me.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not this time.""

Marcus looked between them.

"What happened between all of you?""

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel reached into his coat and placed a small envelope on the table.

"Your father left one more thing.""

Marcus stared at it.

"What?""

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Proof of who actually destroyed both our families.""

The envelope sat between them.

Waiting.

And on the front, written in his father's handwriting, were five words:

*For Marcus. Read this alone.*
