Chapter 3: The Woman In The Shadows
Marcus felt every muscle in his body tense.
His mother's voice echoed through the dark hallway.
Calm.
Controlled.
Almost amused.
"Evelyn?""
Hannah stood frozen on the staircase.
For a brief moment, nobody moved.
The expensive chandelier above them flickered softly, casting shadows across the walls.
Marcus slowly stepped forward.
"What are you doing here?""
Evelyn walked out from the darkness.
She was no longer holding her purse.
No longer pretending to leave.
She looked completely comfortable.
Like she owned the house.
Like she belonged there more than anyone.
"I forgot something.""
Marcus stared at her.
"You forgot your phone?""
"No.""
Her eyes moved toward Hannah.
"I forgot that some people will always choose to hide behind lies.""
Hannah's face tightened.
"Please leave.""
Evelyn smiled.
"There she is.""
Marcus looked between them.
"What is that supposed to mean?""
Evelyn walked down the hallway slowly.
"That is the Hannah I know.""
Marcus frowned.
"The Hannah you know?""
"Of course.""
She stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
"You think you married someone you completely understand.""
Her eyes moved toward Hannah.
"But you only know the version she wanted you to see.""
Marcus felt his jaw tighten.
"Enough.""
Evelyn looked at him.
"I am trying to protect you.""
"No.""
His voice was cold.
"You are trying to control this conversation.""
For the first time, Evelyn's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Marcus noticed.
A tiny crack.
A moment of surprise.
He had never spoken to her that way before.
"Hannah," Evelyn said softly, "tell him.""
Hannah didn't answer.
"Tell him what your father did.""
Marcus turned toward his wife.
"Hannah?""
She looked trapped.
Not because she didn't want to tell him.
Because she had been carrying this secret for too long.
Evelyn crossed her arms.
"I knew this day would come.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What day?""
"The day the truth finally catches up.""
Hannah shook her head.
"No.""
Marcus looked back at her.
"What does she mean?""
Hannah closed her eyes.
Then slowly walked down the stairs.
"Six years ago, before I met you, my father was accused of stealing money from his business partners.""
Marcus said nothing.
He waited.
"He was facing charges.""
Evelyn immediately spoke.
"Not just charges. He ruined people's lives.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Let Hannah talk.""
The command was quiet.
But firm.
Evelyn pressed her lips together.
Hannah continued.
"When I found out, I went to the police.""
Marcus stared at her.
"You reported your own father?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
The room became silent.
"He was hurting people. He was lying to everyone. My mother spent years covering for him because she was afraid.""
Hannah's voice trembled.
"I couldn't do it anymore.""
Marcus watched her carefully.
"And then?""
"My father found out.""
She looked down.
"He told me I had destroyed our family.""
Marcus felt something twist inside him.
"What happened after that?""
"He disappeared.""
"Disappeared?""
"He left the country before the trial.""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"And left everyone else to deal with the damage.""
Marcus looked at his mother.
"You knew this?""
Evelyn didn't hesitate.
"Yes.""
"How?""
She looked away for half a second.
That was enough.
Marcus noticed.
"How did you know?""
Evelyn remained silent.
Marcus repeated himself.
"How did you know about Hannah's father before I did?""
The silence grew heavier.
Finally, Evelyn answered.
"He contacted me.""
Hannah looked shocked.
"What?""
Evelyn looked at her.
"He came to me.""
"When?""
"Before the wedding.""
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
Before the wedding.
Six years ago.
A secret meeting.
And nobody told him.
"What did he want?""
Evelyn looked at Hannah.
"He wanted money.""
Hannah shook her head.
"No.""
Evelyn continued.
"He said he had proof that Hannah was involved.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
Hannah's face went pale.
"That's not true.""
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
"Isn't it strange?""
"What?""
"Your wife reported her father, but somehow she knew exactly where every document was. Every transaction. Every detail.""
Marcus stared at Hannah.
"Hannah?""
She looked horrified.
"Marcus, no.""
"Did you know about the documents?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know where the evidence was?""
Hannah hesitated.
"I knew some things.""
Evelyn immediately stepped in.
"Because she helped him.""
Marcus looked at Hannah.
"No.""
The word came out quietly.
Not because he believed Evelyn.
Because he couldn't believe she would even suggest it.
Hannah shook her head.
"I did not help him.""
"Then why would she say that?""
"Because she wants you to doubt me.""
Evelyn laughed.
"Convenient.""
Marcus felt the room closing in.
Too many secrets.
Too many missing pieces.
He looked at his wife.
"Why didn't you tell me any of this?""
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was ashamed.""
"Of what?""
"Of where I came from.""
Marcus softened slightly.
"Hannah.""
She shook her head.
"You don't understand.""
"Then help me understand.""
Her voice broke.
"I spent my whole life trying to become someone different from my father.""
She wiped her tears.
"When I met you, I finally felt like I had escaped.""
Marcus listened.
"I didn't want you looking at me and seeing him.""
Those words hit him.
Because he realized something.
Hannah wasn't hiding a crime.
She was hiding pain.
But before he could respond, Evelyn spoke again.
"Then why did Daniel message me tonight?""
Marcus looked at her.
"Because you contacted him.""
Evelyn smiled.
"No.""
She reached into her coat pocket.
And pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Marcus stared at it.
"What is that?""
Evelyn handed it to him.
"A letter.""
He didn't take it.
"From who?""
"Your wife.""
Hannah's face changed instantly.
"No.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What?""
Hannah stepped forward.
"Where did you get that?""
Evelyn smiled.
"From your old apartment.""
Marcus froze.
His old apartment.
The place where he and Hannah lived before they bought the mansion.
The place filled with their memories.
The place only family knew about.
"Hannah?""
She looked terrified.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"What is this?""
Evelyn answered before Hannah could.
"A letter she wrote to your father.""
Marcus looked confused.
"My father died ten years ago.""
"I know.""
Evelyn's eyes became colder.
"Which is why you should ask yourself why your wife wrote to him after he was already gone.""
Marcus looked at Hannah.
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
"Is that true?""
A long silence.
Then Hannah whispered:
"Yes.""
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
"Why?""
She looked down.
"Because your father was the only person who could have helped me.""
Marcus stared.
"What are you talking about?""
Hannah slowly reached into her pocket.
She pulled out an old photograph.
The edges were worn.
The paper was faded.
She handed it to him.
Marcus looked down.
At first, he didn't understand what he was seeing.
Then he did.
His fingers went numb.
Because in the photograph was his father.
Standing beside Hannah's father.
And between them...
Was a young Hannah.
Holding a document.
A document with Marcus Bennett's family name written across the top.
Marcus looked up.
"What is this?""
Hannah's lips trembled.
"The reason your father and mine knew each other.""
Marcus stared at the photograph.
"Why was my father involved with your family?""
Hannah took a shaky breath.
"Because before you and I ever met...""
She looked toward Evelyn.
"Your family already knew mine.""
Marcus turned slowly toward his mother.
Evelyn's face had changed.
For the first time that night...
She looked afraid.
And then Marcus noticed something.
Something on the floor beside her.
A small black device.
A recording device.
Still blinking.
Evelyn had been recording their conversation.
Marcus stared at it.
"Mom...""
Her expression hardened.
"You weren't supposed to find that.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Why were you recording us?""
Evelyn said nothing.
The device continued blinking.
Then suddenly...
A voice came through the speaker.
A man's voice.
Old.
Weak.
But familiar.
Marcus froze.
Because he recognized it.
It was his father's voice.
May you like
And the first words he heard were:
"Marcus... if you're hearing this, it means Evelyn finally came after Hannah.""
