Chapter 5: The Letter My Father Hid
Marcus stared at the envelope.
Five words.
Written in the handwriting he knew better than his own.
*For Marcus. Read this alone.*
His father's handwriting.
The same handwriting that had appeared on birthday cards, old family notes, and the little reminders his father used to leave on the kitchen counter.
Buy milk.
Call your mother.
Proud of you.
Simple words.
Safe words.
But this envelope didn't feel safe.
It felt like a door.
A door that had been locked for years.
And now someone was forcing him to open it.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel Whitmore stood near the entrance, watching Marcus carefully.
Hannah looked terrified.
Evelyn looked angry.
And Marcus realized something that made his stomach turn.
For the first time in his life, the three people standing in front of him all wanted something from him.
But none of them were telling him everything.
Marcus picked up the envelope.
"Where did you get this?""
Daniel answered quietly.
"Your father gave it to me.""
Marcus looked up.
"When?""
"Two months before he died.""
The room went silent.
Marcus felt his heartbeat in his ears.
"Two months?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father knew something was going to happen.""
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
"Don't listen to him.""
Marcus turned.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel Whitmore is a liar.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"And Evelyn Bennett is innocent?""
The two stared at each other.
Years of hatred seemed to fill the space between them.
Marcus looked between them.
"Enough.""
His voice stopped both of them.
"I don't care who thinks they're right.""
He held up the envelope.
"I want the truth.""
Daniel nodded.
"You deserve that.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No, Marcus. You deserve protection.""
He looked at her.
"Protection from what?""
She didn't answer.
That was becoming the most frustrating thing about this night.
Every question led to another secret.
Every secret led to another person refusing to speak.
Marcus looked at Hannah.
"Did you know he was coming?""
She shook her head immediately.
"No.""
"Did you know about this letter?""
"No.""
Her answer came too quickly.
Marcus studied her face.
She looked hurt that he even had to ask.
"I swear, Marcus.""
He believed her.
But belief wasn't enough anymore.
Not tonight.
He turned back to Daniel.
"Why now?""
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"Because she started the game again.""
Marcus frowned.
"What game?""
Daniel looked at Hannah.
Then at him.
"The same one she played six years ago.""
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"Be careful.""
Daniel smiled without humor.
"I spent ten years being careful.""
Marcus opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Something about that sentence bothered him.
"Ten years?""
Daniel looked at him.
"Your father and I were enemies.""
He glanced at the photograph.
"But before that, we were partners.""
Marcus looked at the document on the table.
"The business deal.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
"What happened?""
Daniel took a slow breath.
"Your father discovered that money was being moved illegally through our company.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"And he thought it was my father?""
"No.""
Daniel's answer was immediate.
"Your father knew exactly who was responsible.""
Marcus froze.
"Who?""
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was enough.
Marcus felt the answer before Daniel said it.
"Your mother.""
Hannah gasped softly.
Evelyn's face turned cold.
"That is a lie.""
Daniel didn't look away.
"Richard found the accounts.""
Marcus looked down at the financial documents.
"The signatures.""
"Yes.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"He confronted her.""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
Because the thought felt impossible.
His mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who sat beside him during every school event.
The woman who cried when he graduated.
The woman who told him honesty mattered more than money.
No.
It couldn't be that simple.
Daniel continued.
"Your father wanted to report everything.""
Marcus whispered:
"And she stopped him?""
Daniel looked at him.
"She begged him.""
A strange feeling passed through Marcus.
"Begged?""
"She said she made one mistake. She said she could fix it.""
Daniel's eyes moved toward Evelyn.
"But then Richard found out she had been hiding something else.""
Marcus looked at his mother.
"What?""
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel continued.
"She wasn't just moving money.""
Marcus felt cold.
"What else?""
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"She was protecting someone.""
The room fell silent.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"Who?""
Evelyn's eyes flickered.
A small movement.
But Marcus saw it.
"Who were you protecting?""
No answer.
Daniel spoke.
"Me.""
Marcus looked at him.
"What?""
Daniel nodded.
"I was responsible too.""
Hannah looked shocked.
"You?""
Daniel lowered his head.
"I signed documents I should not have signed.""
Marcus stared.
"So both of you were involved?""
"Yes.""
The honesty surprised him.
Daniel continued.
"But your father wanted the truth exposed.""
Marcus looked at the letter.
"And my mother didn't.""
"No.""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Because if the truth came out, she would lose everything.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"Is that why you hated Hannah?""
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"What?""
"Because she knew.""
Silence.
Marcus continued.
"You weren't afraid of her father.""
He stepped closer.
"You were afraid she would tell me what you did.""
Evelyn's face changed.
For a second, Marcus saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Then it disappeared.
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
"Then prove me wrong.""
Evelyn said nothing.
Marcus looked down at the envelope again.
His hands trembled slightly.
He wanted to open it.
But something stopped him.
His father had written one instruction.
Read this alone.
Why?
Why would his father want him alone?
Unless...
Unless the letter contained something that would change everything.
Marcus looked at Hannah.
"I need a minute.""
Her eyes softened.
"Marcus...""
"I need to know.""
She nodded slowly.
"I understand.""
That answer hurt.
Because she always understood.
Even when she was suffering.
Even when nobody understood her.
Marcus walked toward the study.
The room where his father used to work.
The room that had remained almost untouched since his death.
He closed the door.
For the first time that night, he was alone.
He sat behind his father's old desk.
The envelope felt heavier now.
Slowly, he opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
Marcus unfolded it.
The first line made his breath stop.
*My son,*
He swallowed.
He hadn't seen those words in years.
He continued reading.
*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the consequences of my choices.*
Marcus frowned.
"My choices?""
He kept reading.
*I spent my life believing I could fix every problem. I believed money, influence, and patience could repair anything. I was wrong.*
A tear almost formed in Marcus's eyes.
Because that sounded like his father.
Always carrying everything alone.
*The truth about Evelyn is only part of the story. There is another person who knows what happened. Someone who has been closer to you than you realize.*
Marcus stopped.
Closer to you?
His hand tightened around the paper.
He continued.
*Do not judge Hannah for the sins of her father. She was the only person brave enough to do what I was too afraid to do.*
Marcus looked down.
Hannah.
His wife.
The woman he almost lost because everyone around him had been controlling the truth.
Then he reached the final paragraph.
And his entire body went still.
*Marcus, before you trust anyone, remember this: the person who betrayed me was not your mother alone.*
His eyes moved to the final sentence.
*It was someone you call family.*
The paper slipped slightly from his hand.
Someone he called family.
Not mother.
Not father.
Family.
A sound came from outside the study.
A quiet knock.
Marcus looked up.
"Who is it?""
No answer.
Then the door slowly opened.
Hannah stood there.
Her face was pale.
"Marcus...""
He folded the letter quickly.
"What happened?""
She looked terrified.
"I found something.""
He stood.
"What?""
She stepped inside and closed the door behind her.
Then she whispered:
"I found out why your father wanted you to read that letter alone.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Why?""
Hannah looked toward the hallway.
Then back at him.
"Because the person who betrayed him...""
May you like
Her voice shook.
"...is still inside this house.""
