Chapter 9: The Man Behind The Shadows

For eight years, I believed Adrian Voss was the monster.

I believed he was the beginning of Rose’s nightmare.

The reason she disappeared.

The reason Emma was hunted.

The reason my life was torn apart.

I was wrong.

Adrian Voss wasn’t the storm.

He was just another man standing in the rain.

The real storm had been watching from the shadows.

The stranger stepped into the light.

He looked older than Adrian.

Not weaker.

Older in the way a person becomes when they have spent years controlling everything around them.

Rose’s face had lost all color.

“Cole,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Who is he?””

She didn’t answer.

The man smiled.

“Still protecting him.””

Rose’s hands trembled.

“Victor…”

The name echoed through the room.

Victor.

I looked at him.

“Victor what?””

His smile widened.

“Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

Until I saw Daniels’ expression.

The officer looked like he had just seen a ghost.

“You.””

Victor glanced at him.

“Officer Daniels.””

My eyes moved between them.

“You know him?””

Daniels swallowed.

“I thought he was dead.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“That’s what made it easier.””

My hand tightened.

“What is going on?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rose stepped forward.

“Victor was Adrian’s partner.””

I stared.

“Partner?””

She nodded.

“Before Adrian built his empire, before anyone knew his name…”

Her voice cracked.

“Victor was the one teaching him.””

Victor smiled.

“Teaching is such an ugly word.””

“What would you call it?”” I asked.

“Preparing.””

I felt anger rise.

“You destroyed people’s lives.””

Victor looked at me calmly.

“No.””

He pointed toward Rose.

“She did.””

Rose flinched.

I moved closer to her.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Victor laughed.

“You still don’t know, do you?””

I looked at Rose.

“What?””

She looked away.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Rose had faced Adrian Voss without shaking.

She had faced danger.

She had faced death.

But this man?

This man broke something inside her.

Victor walked around the room slowly.

“Rose Carter was never just a woman who discovered Adrian’s crimes.””

He stopped.

“She was part of them.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Rose closed her eyes.

“Cole…”

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Silence.

That was the answer.

I stepped back.

“Rose?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was young.””

Victor smiled.

“Everyone says that.””

She ignored him.

“I didn’t know what Adrian was really doing.””

“You worked for him?””

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

Not because she had a past.

Everyone had a past.

Because I realized there was another version of Rose I never knew.

“I was an accountant,” she said.

I stared.

“I found records.””

“His crimes.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed?””

Her face broke.

“I tried to leave.””

Victor interrupted.

“She tried to steal from us.””

I looked at him.

“Us?””

His smile disappeared.

“Adrian was my creation.””

The room went silent.

“I built the network. Adrian had the face. The charm. The reputation.””

Victor stepped closer.

“But he became too emotional.””

“Emotional?””

“He cared about his son.””

I froze.

Daniel.

Victor continued.

“And Daniel became weak because of it.””

Rose whispered:

“Victor killed him.””

The room changed.

Victor didn’t deny it.

He simply looked annoyed.

“Daniel made choices.””

I stepped forward.

“You murdered him.””

Victor looked at me.

“You sound like Rose.””

“Good.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

A crack in the mask.

“You don’t understand, Cole.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

He leaned closer.

“You understand loyalty.””

His eyes moved to my wolf patch.

“That’s why Rose chose you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“Ask her.””

I looked at Rose.

“What does he mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Victor laughed.

“She didn’t choose you because you were safe.””

A pause.

“She chose you because Daniel trusted you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Trusted me for what?””

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“The truth.””

I didn’t move.

Victor opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A baby.

A hospital room.

And a younger version of me.

My blood turned cold.

“What is that?””

Rose started crying.

“Cole…”

I looked at her.

“What is that?””

She whispered:

“The reason I had to leave.””

I stared at the photograph.

The baby.

The hospital.

Me standing beside Rose.

But there was something else.

A document.

A name.

My name.

And another line beneath it.

*Guardian Agreement.*

I looked up.

“No.””

Rose stepped forward.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked broken.

“I don’t know.””

Victor smiled.

“She never told you because she was afraid you’d hate her.””

I looked at Rose.

“Explain.””

Her voice barely came out.

“When Daniel knew he was going to die, he needed someone to protect Emma.””

I stared.

“Me.””

She nodded.

“But there was a reason.””

“What reason?””

Rose touched the photograph.

“Because Daniel knew you weren’t just someone I loved.””

The room became silent.

“You were Emma’s legal guardian.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

“Daniel changed the documents before he died.””

I looked at Victor.

Then Rose.

Then the photograph.

Everything shifted.

All these years…

All the anger.

All the questions.

Rose hadn’t abandoned me.

She had been trying to keep a promise.

A promise I never knew I made.

Victor stepped back.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“I understand that you’re afraid.””

For the first time, Victor looked angry.

“Careful.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You spent years manipulating people because you thought everyone was weak.””

I pointed at the wolf patch.

“But you missed the one thing people like you never understand.””

Victor stared.

“Family.””

The lights suddenly went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Rose screamed.

When the emergency lights came on…

Victor was gone.

And so was the envelope.

But one thing remained.

A phone on the floor.

A message appeared.

From Victor.

*If you want Emma alive, come alone.*

Below it was a location.

May you like

And one final sentence.

*Bring the wolf patch.*
