Chapter 3: The Man Behind The Door
I didn’t sleep.
Not because I was afraid.
Fear was something I understood.
Fear was simple.
It told you when to fight.
What kept me awake was confusion.
Rose was alive.
Emma was here.
And someone was hunting them both.
At 5:17 in the morning, I heard a noise outside.
A footstep.
Then another.
I grabbed the old flashlight beside my bed and moved quietly down the hallway.
Emma’s door was open.
Empty.
My heart dropped.
Then I heard a tiny voice from the kitchen.
“Mr. Cole?””
I rushed in.
Emma stood near the table holding a glass of water.
“What are you doing awake?””
She rubbed her eyes.
“I heard you walking.””
I let out a breath.
“Go back to bed.””
She didn’t move.
Instead, she looked at me.
“Are you scared?””
The question surprised me.
“No.””
She tilted her head.
“Mom said you would say that.””
I almost smiled.
“Your mom knew me too well.””
Emma looked at the wolf patch on my vest hanging by the door.
“Did you love her?””
The question hit harder than I expected.
“Yes.””
“Then why did she leave?””
I didn’t have an answer.
Not one a six-year-old should hear.
So I sat beside her.
“Sometimes people leave because they think they’re protecting someone.””
“Like Mom?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
Emma was quiet.
Then she said:
“Mom was crying when she gave me the patch.””
My body went still.
“When?””
“Before we left.””
“Where did you leave from?””
She looked toward the window.
“A house.””
“What house?””
“I don’t know.””
“Emma, think.””
She closed her eyes.
“Big house. White fence. There was a bird statue.””
A bird statue.
My mind raced.
Then my phone rang.
Officer Daniels.
I answered.
“Tell me you found something.””
His voice was serious.
“We found Evan’s real identity.””
I stood.
“Who is he?””
A pause.
“His name isn’t Evan.””
My grip tightened.
“Then who is he?””
Daniels lowered his voice.
“His real name is Adrian Voss.””
The name meant nothing.
Until it did.
I walked to my desk and opened an old drawer.
Inside were newspaper clippings I had refused to throw away.
One article.
One photograph.
A wealthy businessman smiling beside a charity event.
Adrian Voss.
The same man who had been connected to missing women cases years ago.
Nothing ever stuck.
No charges.
No proof.
Just rumors.
I stared at the picture.
“Cole?””
I looked up.
Emma was watching me.
“What?””
“Is he bad?””
I wanted to lie.
But kids can feel lies.
“Yes.””
She nodded slowly.
“Mom knew.””
The words landed like a punch.
“She knew about him?””
Emma nodded.
“She said he took people who tried to tell the truth.””
I grabbed my keys.
“Daniels, keep looking into Voss.””
“Where are you going?””
“To find Rose.””
“You don’t know where she is.””
“No.””
I looked at Emma.
“But I know where she was.””
The bird statue.
The white fence.
A place from eight years ago.
A place I had forgotten.
Rose’s old family house.
The house she inherited after her parents died.
The house she told me she hated because every room carried memories she didn’t want.
I drove there with Emma beside me.
The house sat at the edge of town, abandoned and covered in weeds.
The white fence was broken.
The bird statue was cracked.
But someone had been there recently.
The front door wasn’t locked.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Except one thing.
A photograph on the table.
Me.
Rose.
And a baby.
Emma stepped closer.
“That’s me.””
I stared at the picture.
Rose had hidden this.
All these years.
A sound came from upstairs.
I turned.
“Stay behind me.””
Emma grabbed my hand.
“Mom said to trust you.””
I moved toward the stairs.
Slowly.
Every step creaked.
At the top was a hallway.
Three doors.
One was slightly open.
I pushed it.
Inside was a bedroom.
And sitting on the floor was Rose.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Cole.””
I couldn’t move.
For eight years, I imagined this moment.
I imagined anger.
Questions.
Pain.
But when I finally saw her, all I could say was:
“You’re alive.””
Rose covered her mouth.
“I tried to come back.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Her eyes moved to Emma.
“Because of him.””
“Voss?””
She nodded.
“He knew about Emma.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me everything.””
Rose stood slowly.
“I was working for Voss.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
“I was undercover.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“I thought I could expose him.””
“And?””
“And he found out.””
She looked at Emma.
“I ran.””
I stared at her.
“You let me believe you abandoned me.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
“By disappearing?””
Her tears fell.
“By making him think you meant nothing to me.””
Silence.
Then a noise came from downstairs.
A door opening.
Rose’s face changed instantly.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not for herself.
For us.
“He found us.””
The lights went out.
And from the darkness below, a familiar voice called:
“Rose.””
A slow smile entered the voice.
“You really thought you could hide forever?””
Rose grabbed Emma.
I stepped forward.
May you like
Because the man walking up the stairs wasn’t looking for Rose anymore.
He was looking for me.
