Chapter 10: The Wolf Always Comes Home

The abandoned factory stood outside the city limits.

Broken windows.

Rust-covered walls.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Exactly the kind of place men like Victor Hale loved.

Places where nobody asked questions.

I arrived alone.

At least, that was what Victor believed.

The truth was different.

Because after everything I had learned, I finally understood something.

A wolf didn’t hunt alone.

It protected its pack.

The moment I arrived, Victor’s voice came through the speakers.

“You came.””

I looked around.

“Where’s Emma?””

A laugh echoed.

“You sound like Rose.””

“Where is she?””

“Safe.””

I didn’t believe him.

“You expect me to trust you?””

“No.””

His footsteps echoed.

“That’s why I respect you.””

Victor appeared above me on the metal platform.

Emma stood beside him.

My heart stopped.

“Emma!””

She looked at me.

“Cole!””

Victor held up a hand.

“She’s fine.””

“Move away from her.””

He smiled.

“You really think this ends with violence?””

“No.””

I looked at Emma.

“It ends with you losing.””

Victor laughed.

“Still confident.””

He walked down the stairs.

“You know what your problem is, Cole?””

“I’m listening.””

“You think love makes people stronger.””

He stopped.

“It makes them vulnerable.””

I looked at Emma.

Then at him.

“You’re wrong.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

I stepped forward.

“Love is the reason people survive things that should have destroyed them.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“You sound like Daniel.””

“Maybe he was right.””

That hit him.

Because Daniel was the one person Victor couldn’t control.

“You never knew him.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I know his daughter.””

Victor smiled.

“Then you know what happens next.””

He pulled out the documents.

The guardian agreement.

The evidence.

Everything.

“You give me the patch.””

I laughed.

Victor frowned.

“You think this is funny?””

“No.””

I removed my vest slowly.

The wolf patch was sewn into the leather.

The symbol Rose had given me.

The promise.

I touched it one last time.

Then I looked at Victor.

“You know what everyone gets wrong about wolves?””

He said nothing.

“They think the strongest one leads.””

I stepped closer.

“They’re wrong.””

I ripped the patch from the vest.

“The strongest one protects.””

I threw the patch toward him.

Victor caught it.

For one second, he smiled.

Then his phone rang.

His expression changed.

I smiled.

Because that was the moment he realized.

The moment he understood.

He had been played.

The patch wasn’t the secret.

It was the distraction.

The evidence had already been copied.

The files had already been sent.

And the entire conversation had already been recorded.

Victor looked at his phone.

A message appeared.

*Evidence uploaded.*

His face turned pale.

“How?””

I looked toward the entrance.

Police officers flooded the factory.

Behind them stood Daniels.

Victor stared at him.

“You.””

Daniels stepped forward.

“You were right about one thing.””

Victor looked confused.

“What?””

Daniels smiled slightly.

“Trust is dangerous.””

He looked at me.

“But sometimes people deserve a second chance.””

Victor was arrested that night.

The final investigation exposed everything.

Adrian Voss.

Marcus Voss.

Victor Hale.

Years of crimes.

Years of people hurt.

But the most important thing wasn’t the arrests.

It was what happened after.

Six months later, I stood outside my house watching Emma ride her bicycle.

She was faster now.

Louder.

Happier.

Exactly how a child should be.

Rose sat beside me.

The silence between us felt different now.

Not empty.

Peaceful.

“I still feel guilty,” she said.

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For all the years you lost.””

I nodded.

“I do too.””

She looked surprised.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I watched Emma laugh as she nearly crashed into a tree.

“Because I spent years being angry at you.””

Rose looked down.

“I deserved it.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“We both deserved the truth.””

She smiled sadly.

“Do you think we can ever get back what we lost?””

I thought about that.

The old me would have wanted the past.

The old life.

The easy version.

But life didn’t work like that.

“You don’t rebuild something by pretending it never broke.””

Rose looked at me.

“You rebuild it differently.””

She smiled.

“Sounds like something I would say.””

“I’ve had a good teacher.””

Emma ran toward us.

“Cole!””

I stood.

“What?””

She held something in her hand.

The wolf patch.

I froze.

“Where did you get that?””

She smiled.

“I found it.””

Rose looked at me.

Emma held it out.

“Can you fix it?””

I took it carefully.

The leather was worn.

The stitching was damaged.

But it was still the wolf.

Still the promise.

I smiled.

“Yeah.””

Emma nodded.

“Good.””

“Why?””

She looked at me like the answer was obvious.

“Because Mom says the wolf always comes back.””

I looked at Rose.

She smiled.

And for the first time in eight years…

The words didn’t hurt.

They felt like home.

Because I finally understood.

The wolf never came back because it was lost.

May you like

It came back because it had something worth protecting.

And I had found mine.
