Chapter 6: The Secret In Emma’s Blood

The next morning, I drove without telling Rose where I was going.

Not because I wanted to punish her.

Because I needed space.

Eight years.

Eight years of believing one story.

Then another.

Then another.

Every time I thought I knew the truth, someone pulled another piece away.

I stopped near the old bridge outside town.

The same bridge where Rose and I used to sit after midnight.

Back when life was simple.

Back when our biggest problem was deciding where to travel next.

My phone rang.

Rose.

I stared at the screen.

Then answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Cole, please.””

I looked at the river below.

“I need answers.””

“I know.””

“No more secrets.””

“I know.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who was Emma’s father?””

Silence.

Then:

“His name was Daniel.””

I waited.

“And?””

“He was Adrian Voss’s son.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You know the name.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

Rose took a breath.

“Daniel wasn’t like his father.””

I said nothing.

“He found out what Adrian was doing.””

“Then he helped you.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“He tried to expose him.””

I looked down.

“And Adrian killed him?””

Rose didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

My fists tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Daniel gave me something.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

I froze.

“What kind of recording?””

“Proof.””

The wind moved through the trees.

“Where is it?””

“Safe.””

“Where?””

Another silence.

Then she whispered:

“With Emma.””

I felt my heart drop.

“What?””

“Daniel knew if anything happened to him, Adrian would come after everyone connected to him.””

I gripped the phone.

“So he hid it with his daughter?””

“No.””

Rose’s voice softened.

“He hid it inside something Emma would always have.””

I thought about the wolf patch.

The photograph.

The things Rose left behind.

“What?””

“The necklace.””

I remembered.

Emma always wore a small silver necklace.

A tiny star.

I had seen it every day.

“Rose.””

“I never opened it.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel told me only one person could.””

“Who?””

Her answer came quietly.

“You.””

I went home immediately.

Emma was sitting at the kitchen table eating cereal.

She looked up.

“Cole?””

I knelt beside her.

“Can I see your necklace?””

Her hand instantly went to it.

“Why?””

I smiled gently.

“Because I need to fix something.””

She looked uncertain.

Then removed it.

The small silver star rested in my palm.

I examined it carefully.

Nothing.

No opening.

No lock.

Then I remembered something.

The wolf patch.

The promise.

The things people hid in plain sight.

I pressed the small star against the wolf emblem on my vest.

A click.

Rose gasped.

The necklace opened.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Emma stared.

“What is it?””

I looked at Rose.

“The truth.””

We watched the recording in silence.

Daniel appeared on the screen.

He looked young.

Tired.

But kind.

The same eyes Emma had.

“If you’re watching this,” he said, “then I’m probably gone.””

Rose covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“My father built everything on lies. He destroyed lives. He hurt people who trusted him.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“But I found the evidence.””

A folder appeared.

Names.

Accounts.

Photos.

Everything.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“The person I trusted most to protect this was not a lawyer.””

He smiled sadly.

“It was Cole Walker.””

I looked at Rose.

She was crying.

Daniel continued.

“Cole doesn’t know it yet, but he is the only person my father fears.””

The recording ended.

No warning.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Emma looked between us.

“Is he my dad?””

Rose pulled her close.

“Yes.””

The question I had avoided suddenly became real.

Emma deserved the truth.

But she also deserved a childhood.

Not fear.

Not secrets.

Not men chasing her because of her blood.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No voice.

Just a recording.

Marcus.

“You found the card.””

My body went cold.

He continued.

“Good.””

A pause.

“Now I know where it is.””

I looked toward the window.

A black vehicle was parked across the street.

Watching.

Marcus’s voice returned.

“Bring me the evidence.””

The line went silent.

Then one final message appeared on my screen.

A photo.

Taken seconds ago.

Of Emma.

Inside our house.
