Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Secret

Nobody spoke.

The file sat on the desk between us like a weapon.

My name was written across the cover.

*Maya Carter.*

Not Richard’s daughter.

Not Daniel’s daughter.

Just my name.

The woman who brought it in stood calmly, as if she hadn’t just walked into the room and shattered everything we thought we knew.

Daniel stared at her.

“Rachel.””

She looked at him.

“Hello, little brother.””

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

“You knew.””

Rachel tilted her head.

“Knew what?””

“That this was happening.””

She didn’t answer.

That silence told us everything.

My father stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

Rachel looked at him.

“I’m the person who has spent twenty years cleaning up everyone else’s mistakes.””

My father’s voice hardened.

“You mean creating them.””

A faint smile crossed her face.

“Richard, you always did believe everything was simple.””

He looked at the file.

“What’s inside?””

Rachel walked to the desk.

“Answers.””

“Then give them to us.””

She looked at me.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

My heart dropped.

“No?””

She shook her head.

“Not until Maya hears the entire story.””

I laughed quietly.

“The entire story?””

My voice cracked.

“How many versions are there?””

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

Too many.

Rachel opened the file.

The first page was a hospital record.

My birth record.

But there was something strange.

A handwritten note at the bottom.

My grandfather’s handwriting.

The same handwriting from the letter.

I leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

Rachel read it.

“‘The child must be protected from the truth until she is old enough to understand.’”

I looked at my mother.

“Protected from what?””

Nicole started crying.

Rachel looked at her.

“You should have told her.””

Nicole whispered:

“I was trying to.””

“When?””

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“When she discovered the DNA test? When she discovered Daniel? When she discovered you tried to steal from her?””

My mother flinched.

I felt sick.

But then Rachel said something that surprised me.

“Because Nicole was not the one who started this.””

Everyone looked at her.

My father frowned.

“Then who did?””

Rachel closed the file.

“Your grandfather discovered that someone was changing the trust documents before his death.””

The lawyer nodded.

“That’s why he hired me.””

I looked at the lawyer.

“You knew?””

He looked ashamed.

“I knew there was danger. I didn’t know who was responsible.””

Rachel continued.

“Your grandfather suspected Daniel.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

His face went pale.

“Why?””

“Because you had access.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I never touched that money.””

“I know.””

Everyone looked at Rachel.

She continued.

“Because I was the one who found the real evidence.””

The room became silent.

My father stared.

“Then why hide it?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because the person responsible was someone none of us were prepared to accuse.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at my mother.

Nicole immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Rachel didn’t look away.

“It was your father.””

My stomach dropped.

“My grandfather?””

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“Your grandfather was not the person behind the theft.””

She paused.

“He was the person who discovered it.””

My father looked confused.

“Then why say it was him?””

“Because someone wanted everyone to believe he was hiding something.””

The lawyer stepped forward.

“I found altered documents after his death.””

He placed several papers on the desk.

“They were designed to make it appear like your grandfather was moving money illegally.””

I stared at the pages.

“So someone framed him?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

My father looked at the documents.

“Who had the ability to do this?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Someone who knew the family.””

My chest tightened.

Again.

Always someone close.

Rachel took a breath.

“Someone who knew your grandfather’s habits.””

The room went quiet.

“Someone who knew Nicole’s weaknesses.””

Nicole looked away.

“Someone who knew Daniel would be blamed.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Rachel finally answered.

“Me.””

Nobody moved.

The words didn’t make sense.

Rachel looked at me.

“I was the one who helped create the first false trail.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?””

She looked at him.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

His face twisted.

“You destroyed my life to protect me?””

“I thought you were guilty.””

Daniel froze.

Rachel continued.

“Your behavior changed after Maya was born. You disappeared. You stopped answering calls. You had debts.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was twenty years old.””

“And I thought you were trying to take the money.””

He laughed bitterly.

“So you ruined me.””

“I was wrong.””

The honesty shocked me.

For the first time, someone in this room admitted they had caused damage.

Rachel looked at me.

“But I wasn’t the one who forged your signature.””

My father looked up.

“Then who was?””

Rachel reached into the file.

She pulled out a photograph.

A recent one.

A security camera image.

My heart stopped.

The person in the picture was standing outside our house.

Holding documents.

My father took the photo.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked.

And I felt the air leave my lungs.

Because I knew that person.

Everyone knew that person.

Rachel whispered:

“The person who has been manipulating this family from the beginning…”

She pointed at the photograph.

“Is Marcus Vale.””

The lawyer.

The man who claimed he was helping us.

The man who had guided us toward the truth.

The man who had been standing beside us while we searched for the person responsible.

My father looked at the door.

“He was never trying to help.””

The lawyer’s face went pale.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed one name.

*Marcus Vale.*

The lawyer slowly picked it up.

He answered.

A few seconds passed.

Then his face changed.

“What do you mean she’s gone?””

My blood turned cold.

“Who?””

May you like

The lawyer looked at me.

“Your mother.””
