Chapter 4: The Daughter He Almost Lost
I used to believe the worst thing a parent could do was leave.
I was wrong.
The worst thing was staying.
Staying while hiding the truth.
Staying while building a family on a lie.
My father sat at the kitchen table holding a DNA report like it was something dangerous.
Daniel stood near the door.
Nicole looked like she wanted to disappear.
I couldn’t move.
“Dad,” I whispered.
He looked up.
His eyes were full of pain.
“Maya…”
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
That was when I knew.
The silence was the answer.
I grabbed the paper.
My father tried to stop me.
“Maya, wait.””
“No.””
My fingers shook as I read the words.
*Probability of paternity: 0%.*
I felt like the floor disappeared.
I looked at my father.
“Is this real?””
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
Nicole cried.
“Richard, please listen.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She didn’t speak.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
“I found out years ago.””
My voice broke.
“How many years?””
She looked down.
“Eighteen.””
The number felt impossible.
Eighteen years.
My entire life.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every time my father helped with homework.
Every time he told me I was his little girl.
I looked at him.
“Dad…”
He looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“I found out recently. I didn’t know she hid it from you.””
My mother shook her head.
“I was protecting everyone.””
I stared at her.
“No. You were protecting yourself.””
She flinched.
Dad stood slowly.
“I raised her.””
Nobody spoke.
“I taught her to walk.””
His voice cracked.
“I stayed awake when she was sick.””
He looked at Nicole.
“I loved her.””
Then he looked at me.
“And I still do.””
That was the moment I finally cried.
Not because the test said he wasn’t my biological father.
Because he was still my father.
The man who stayed.
The man who showed up.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Maya, I know this is overwhelming.””
I looked at him.
“You’re my biological father?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where were you?””
His face changed.
“I thought Nicole told me she didn’t want me involved.””
I looked at my mother.
“You lied to both of them.””
Nicole whispered:
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That I would lose you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You almost did.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Dad’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then his expression turned serious.
“What do you mean she signed it?””
My stomach tightened.
“Dad?””
He covered the phone.
“Maya, go upstairs.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Maya.””
I had spent my whole life trusting him.
But I had also spent my whole life learning that adults could hide things.
So I stayed.
He listened again.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?””
He looked at Nicole.
“Your mother filed legal paperwork yesterday.””
Nicole froze.
“What?””
Dad’s voice was cold.
“She’s trying to take control of the house.””
My mother’s face went pale.
“I didn’t.””
He held up the phone.
“The documents were filed under your name.””
Everyone stared.
Then Daniel picked up the folder from the table.
He flipped through the pages.
His face changed.
“Maya…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
He turned the page around.
There was a signature.
My mother’s signature.
And beneath it was another name.
A name that made my blood run cold.
*Daniel Carter.*
But Daniel looked just as shocked as I was.
Because he hadn’t signed it.
May you like
And he whispered:
“I’ve never seen this document before.””
