Chapter 10: The Truth I Chose
The drive back home felt endless.
Nobody spoke.
The rain had stopped, but the roads were still wet.
My father gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Daniel sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window.
Rachel sat beside me in the back.
For once, she had no answers.
No explanations.
No confidence.
Just silence.
My mother was gone.
Marcus had taken her.
Or she had gone with him.
I didn’t know which possibility scared me more.
When we arrived, the front door was open.
My father ran inside.
“Nicole!””
Nothing.
The house was empty.
Too empty.
The kitchen looked exactly the same as the night everything fell apart.
The table.
The papers.
The pregnancy test.
The place where my entire life changed.
Daniel searched the living room.
“Nothing.””
Rachel walked upstairs.
I followed.
My mother’s bedroom door was open.
The closet was empty.
Not everything.
Just the important things.
Documents.
Files.
The things someone would take if they were running.
My father stood frozen.
“She left.””
I looked around.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
I pointed to the desk.
A single envelope sat there.
My name written on it.
Maya.
My father reached for it.
I stopped him.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“This is mine.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
My hands shook.
*Maya,*
*I know you probably hate me.*
I stopped reading.
Because she was right.
Part of me did.
But another part of me still remembered the woman who held my hand when I was scared.
*I spent years believing that if I controlled everything, I could protect everyone. I was wrong.*
I continued.
*I need you to know something. Marcus was never helping me. He found me when I was desperate. He told me he could fix my problems.*
My father closed his eyes.
*He knew about the trust. He knew about the DNA test. He knew every secret I was trying to hide.*
I looked at Rachel.
She nodded slowly.
*He threatened me. He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would tell Maya everything in the cruelest way possible.*
My heart tightened.
*The pregnancy test was his idea.*
Everyone went still.
*He told me to make Maya look guilty because he needed Richard distracted.*
My father whispered:
“No.””
I kept reading.
*I was weak. I was selfish. I was afraid. But I never wanted to hurt my daughter.*
Tears blurred the page.
**Marcus planned everything. The documents. The signatures.
The trust transfer. Even the message to Richard.**
I turned the page.
There was one final sentence.
*But there is one thing Marcus doesn’t know.*
My breathing slowed.
*I recorded everything.*
My father looked up.
“What?””
I searched the envelope.
A small flash drive fell out.
Rachel immediately grabbed it.
“Where’s a computer?””
We rushed downstairs.
The old laptop on the kitchen counter still worked.
My father inserted the drive.
A video appeared.
My mother.
Sitting across from Marcus.
The recording started.
Marcus’s voice filled the room.
“You’re going to do exactly what I tell you.””
Nicole looked terrified.
“What if Maya finds out?””
“She won’t.””
“She’s my daughter.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“Then prove it.””
The room became silent.
The video continued.
“I need control of the trust before she turns eighteen.””
Nicole whispered:
“She’ll hate me.””
Marcus smiled.
“She’ll hate you either way.””
My father’s face changed.
Rachel clenched her fists.
Then Marcus said something that made everyone freeze.
“You forget one thing, Nicole.””
“What?””
“The girl isn’t the only person who can inherit.””
My blood ran cold.
My father leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
The video continued.
Marcus smiled.
“Once Maya is removed from the picture, everything goes to the next beneficiary.””
Rachel whispered:
“Next beneficiary?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?””
The video ended.
A final document appeared.
A beneficiary form.
My grandfather’s trust.
And the name listed below Maya’s was:
*Marcus Vale.*
Nobody spoke.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Marcus stood there.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“You found the recording.””
My father stepped forward.
“You’re finished.””
Marcus smiled.
“Am I?””
Rachel moved in front of me.
“Don’t.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You always were dramatic, Rachel.””
The police sirens sounded outside.
Marcus’s smile disappeared.
My father had already called them.
For the first time, Marcus looked afraid.
But before he was taken away, he looked at me.
“Maya.””
I stared at him.
“You want to know the funny part?””
I said nothing.
“You spent your whole life searching for your real father.””
He smiled sadly.
“But the man who loved you was standing beside you the entire time.””
I looked at Richard.
My father.
Not because of blood.
Because of every choice he made.
Every night he stayed.
Every moment he showed up.
Marcus was taken away.
The documents were investigated.
The trust was protected.
Nicole eventually returned.
But things were different.
Trust isn’t something you rebuild with one apology.
Some wounds take years.
But years later, on my graduation day, I stood beside the man who raised me.
Richard fixed my graduation cap like he had fixed everything else in my life.
“You ready?””
I smiled.
“Yeah.””
He looked at me.
“I’m proud of you.””
Those words were simple.
But they meant everything.
Because after all the secrets…
After all the lies…
After all the people who tried to tell me who I was…
I finally understood something.
Family isn’t the person whose blood runs through your veins.
May you like
Family is the person who stays when the truth comes out.
And my father stayed.
