Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The room stayed silent after Daniel’s words.

“I’ve never seen this document before.””

Nobody moved.

Not my father.

Not my mother.

Not even me.

The only sound was the rain tapping against the kitchen window.

I stared at the paper in Daniel’s hand.

His name was printed clearly beneath my mother’s signature.

A legal document.

A house.

A transfer agreement.

And his name attached to it like he had agreed to something he didn’t even know existed.

My father slowly reached for the paper.

“Give me that.””

Daniel handed it over.

Richard read every line carefully.

The longer he looked, the more his expression changed.

“What?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He placed the paper on the table.

“Your mother was trying to transfer ownership of the house.””

My stomach tightened.

“The house?””

Nicole immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not what it means.””

Dad looked at her.

“Then explain what it means.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I watched my mother—the woman who always had an answer for everything—finally run out of words.

Daniel picked up another page.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

He turned the paper around.

“This isn’t just a transfer agreement.””

My father took it.

His eyes narrowed.

“It’s a trust document.””

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“It means someone was trying to control your inheritance.””

I frowned.

“I don’t have an inheritance.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Yes, you do.””

The room became colder.

“What are you talking about?””

He looked at Nicole.

She looked away.

My father noticed.

“Nicole.””

She didn’t respond.

“Tell her.””

My mother sat down slowly.

“I never wanted you to know this.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence had become her favorite.

Every secret came with the same excuse.

“I never wanted you to know.””

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“When you were born, my parents left you something.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“A trust fund.””

The words barely registered.

“My grandparents?””

She nodded.

“Your grandfather created it before he passed away.””

My father looked confused.

“I thought your father’s estate was divided among family members.””

“It was.””

Nicole’s voice became smaller.

“But Maya’s portion was separate.””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“And someone was trying to move control of it.””

I looked at my mother.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Dad did.

“Because the account requires a legal guardian until you turn eighteen.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“You mean…”

“You turn eighteen in two months,” my father said.

Everything clicked.

My mother didn’t just accuse me because she was scared.

She wasn’t just hiding a pregnancy.

She wasn’t just hiding an affair.

She was trying to control something that belonged to me.

I looked at her.

“Were you waiting until I turned eighteen?””

She started crying.

“No.””

“Then why fake these documents?””

“I didn’t fake them.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Someone did.””

That stopped everyone.

My father turned.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel pointed to the signature.

“My name is here, but it’s not mine.””

He pulled out his phone.

“I have years of legal documents with my signature.””

He compared them.

A few seconds later, his face hardened.

“This was copied.””

My father’s expression changed.

“So someone forged your signature.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at my mother.

“Who?””

She looked terrified.

And for the first time, I realized something.

Maybe Nicole wasn’t the only person hiding something.

“Nicole,” Dad said quietly.

She looked up.

“What?””

“Who helped you?””

Her face went pale.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed her.

Not even her.

The front door suddenly opened.

All of us turned.

A man stepped inside.

My father immediately stood.

“Who are you?””

The man looked around the room.

Then at Nicole.

“You called me.””

My mother froze.

“I didn’t.””

The man smiled.

“You did yesterday.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored him.

He looked directly at me.

“Maya, right?””

I stepped back.

“How do you know my name?””

He reached into his coat pocket.

“I’m here because your mother needs to fix a mistake.””

My father stepped between us.

“You need to leave.””

The man smiled.

“Richard, if you want to know the truth, you should let me speak.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“What truth?””

The man looked at Nicole.

Then at me.

“The truth about who actually signed those papers.””

He pulled out another document.

And placed it on the table.

My blood went cold.

Because the signature at the bottom wasn’t Daniel’s.

May you like

It wasn’t Nicole’s.

It was mine.
